In Florida, felons lose civil rights, including the ability to hold public office and serve on a jury. Trump is a Florida resident, and Florida defers to New York law on the question of felons voting. In New York, convicted felons cannot obtain a permit to possess a firearm. The finalized rule aims to close what gun control advocates call the “gun show loophole” by increasing the requirements to obtain a federal firearms license, or FFL, by more specifically defining what it means to be “engaged in the business” of selling firearms. If the pair “fail to pay at least $105,000 by December 31, 2024, and do not address the failure to pay within 30 days, the amount will increase to $1.25 million,” James’ office said. “Wohl and Burkman orchestrated a depraved and disinformation-ridden campaign to intimidate Black voters in an attempt to sway the election in favor of their preferred candidate,” James said in a statement. The ethics charges that were brought against Clark by the DC Bar’s Office of Disciplinary Counsel allege that he was dishonest and attempted to interfere with the administration of justice after the 2020 election. The law, known as SB4, makes entering Texas illegally a state crime and allows state judges to order immigrants to be deported. Nielson sought to downplay how sweeping the law was and argued it did not interfere with federal authority on immigration. CNN —A Florida man was sentenced Monday to 14 months in prison for threatening to kill Chief Justice John Roberts last year. Neal Brij Sidhwaney, 43, of Fernandina Beach, Florida, pleaded guilty in December to transmitting an interstate threat to kill. The department did not identify which justice was the target of the threatening phone call, but online court documents revealed the threat was made against Roberts. “The identified official is Chief Justice John Roberts whom he allegedly contacted by phone call and threatened to kill,” according to a competency assessment of Sidhwaney previously filed online with a federal court in Florida. In a separate case, a California man charged with attempting to murder Justice Brett Kavanaugh has pleaded not guilty.

CNN —Former Donald Trump adviser Peter Navarro asked the Supreme Court to take another look at his request to avoid prison, filing a long-shot request on Tuesday that the high court rarely grants. In an emergency request last month, Navarro asked the Supreme Court to let him remain free while he challenged his contempt of Congress conviction before the federal appeals court in Washington, DC. Chief Justice John Roberts denied that request March 18, and Navarro reported to prison the following day. Supreme Court rules allow parties whose emergency applications are denied by a single justice to resubmit that request to another justice. In a brief letter Tuesday, Navarro’s attorneys asked Justice Neil Gorsuch, Trump’s first nominee to the court, to review his request.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump and several of his co-defendants in the Georgia election subversion case are appealing a judge’s ruling that let Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis remain on the election subversion case. The defense attorneys on Friday asked the Georgia Court of Appeals to overturn Judge Scott McAfee’s initial decision that allowed Willis and her office continue to pursue the case but only if Nathan Wade, the special prosecutor with whom she had a romantic relationship, resigned. While Wade has since left the case, defense attorneys still want the appellate court to disqualify the entire Fulton County DA’s office. “DA Willis has covered herself and her office in scandal and disrepute, as she has squandered her credibility and repeatedly and flagrantly violated the heightened ethical standards demanded of her position,” the appeal states. However, the judge added, “Georgia law does not permit the finding of an actual conflict for simply making bad choices – even repeatedly.”The district attorney’s office declined to comment.

CNN —A majority of Supreme Court justices appeared skeptical Tuesday of the idea of a nationwide ban or new limits on mifepristone, the primary drug used for medication abortions. At issue in the case are lower-court rulings that would have rolled back recent Food and Drug Administration decisions to ease access to the mifepristone. “What the court did … is enter sweeping nationwide relief that restricts access to mifepristone for every single woman in this country. Some anti-abortion activists see the law as an avenue to end medication abortion, and perhaps all kinds of abortions. CNN —The Supreme Court on Monday indefinitely blocked Texas from enforcing an immigration law that would allow state officials to arrest and detain people they suspect of entering the country illegally. The order came from Justice Samuel Alito because he oversees matters arising from the appeals court that is currently weighing the case. Senate Bill 4, signed into law by Texas Republican Gov. And Texas may be deeply concerned about recent immigration,” attorneys for a pair of immigration groups and El Paso County wrote in court papers. But the 5th US Circuit Court of Appeals granted a temporary stay of the lower court’s decision and said the law would take effect on March 10 if the Supreme Court didn’t act.

Washington CNN —Former Trump adviser Peter Navarro is asking the Supreme Court to let him avoid reporting to a federal prison next week to begin serving a four-month sentence for his contempt of Congress conviction. In an emergency request filed Friday afternoon, Navarro asked the court to let him remain free while he challenges the conviction before the federal appeals court in Washington, DC. Navarro has been ordered to report to a federal prison in Miami by March 19. “Navarro is indisputably neither a flight risk nor a danger to public safety should he be release pending appeal,” the attorneys said. On Thursday, the DC Circuit Court of Appeals unanimously rejected Navarro’s bid, saying he hadn’t sufficiently demonstrated why he should remain free while his appeal of the conviction plays out.
