After decades of painful decline, Detroit’s population grew in 2023, according to new estimates released on Thursday by the Census Bureau. The increase — to 633,218 from 631,366 residents — was slight, lifting Detroit to slightly below levels of 2021. City leaders have long promised to reverse Detroit’s long decline in residents brought on by the shrinking of the auto industry, flight to the suburbs and municipal bankruptcy. The new census estimates showed similar, moderate population rebounds for many big cities in the Midwest and Northeast after previous pandemic-era declines. In the Midwest, cities of that size grew 0.1 percent in 2023 after declining an average of 0.2 percent the year before.

According to the latest finance reports filed last month, Craig had raised only $60,581 by the end of 2023, well behind other Senate candidates. Detroit-area businessman Sandy Pensler launched his second campaign for the Senate in December. SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Brock Purdy threw for 267 yards and a touchdown, and the San Francisco 49ers rallied from 17 points down at halftime to beat the Detroit Lions 34-31 on Sunday and reach the Super Bowl. He engineered a game-winning drive in the fourth quarter to beat Green Bay last week and then had an even bigger comeback against the Lions. Detroit remains the only team to play every season of the Super Bowl era without reaching the ultimate game. Purdy then drove the Niners to a 33-yard field goal by Jake Moody and their first lead of the game. Facial recognition concernsFor years, civil liberties and privacy experts have warned of the risks of overly casual facial recognition use or an overreliance on the technology, and the possibility that algorithmic bias could lead to misidentification, racial discrimination or other unintended consequences. The NewsThe union representing teachers, counselors and other school employees in Portland, Ore., reached a tentative deal with the city's public school district on Sunday, ending a strike that has kept nearly 45,000 students out of classes for more than three weeks in Oregon’s largest district. That is about in the middle of what the district had offered and what the union had asked for at the start of the strike. The strike has drawn attention to public school funding in Oregon. LAS VEGAS (AP) — Las Vegas hotel union workers voted overwhelmingly Monday to approve their contract agreement with casino giant Caesars Entertainment, signaling an end to lengthy labor disputes that had brought the threat of a historic strike to the Strip. The Culinary Workers Union announced on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, that 99% of the vote favored the new five-year deal. The breakthrough deals were tentatively reached earlier this month, just hours before the union had threatened a massive walkout at 18 hotel-casinos on the Strip, including Bellagio, Paris Las Vegas, MGM Grand and Caesars Palace. By the end of the contract, Pappageorge said, union workers will be earning on average $35 hourly, including benefits. Union workers currently make about $26 hourly with benefits.

Photo: Olivier Douliery/AFP/Getty ImagesUnited Auto Workers employees at Chrysler-parent Stellantis have voted overwhelmingly to approve a new labor contract, bringing the tense round of negotiations between the union and Detroit’s carmakers one step closer to completion. The deal was supported by about 68% of Stellantis workers who voted so far, with only a handful of small facilities having yet to report, according to preliminary results published online Friday by the UAW. Votes from those remaining local chapters wouldn’t be enough to overcome the current margin, according to the union’s tally.

Social media’s antisemitism problemThe rise in antisemitism since the outbreak of war in the Middle East has ignited a clash between Wall Street donors and universities, and divided some workplaces. He posted to X his support for white nationalist conspiracy theories that Jewish communities were spreading hatred. The three contracts, if approved by 146,000 union members, would dramatically raise pay for autoworkers, with increases and cost-of-living adjustments that would translate into a 33% wage gain. Top assembly plant workers would earn roughly $42 per hour when the contracts expire in April of 2028. Several smaller facilities were still voting, many of them parts warehouses or component factories where workers got big pay raises and were expected to approve the contract. Full-time temporary workers liked the large raises they received and the chance to get top union pay, he said. In the deals with all three companies, longtime workers would get 25% general raises over the life of the contracts with 11% up front.

South Korean automaker Hyundai has joined Honda and Toyota in raising factory worker wages after the United Auto Workers union reached new contract agreements with Detroit automakers. From 2011 to 2015, about 100,000 properties — more than a quarter of the Detroit lots — were auctioned in tax foreclosures, according to Regrid, a Detroit-based provider of parcel data nationally. (Speculators recently made money after the city bought out vacant lots to help revive an auto plant that would bring jobs to the area.) Mr. Allen said his main project at the agency was finding new ways to stimulate growth that didn’t rely on grants and tax breaks. After reading “Progress and Poverty” years earlier, he’d become obsessed with the problem of speculation, and suggested a land-value tax. A tax break for residents — paid for by nameless investors who are “taking advantage of the city” — would seem like a political layup.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — MGM Resorts International, the largest employer on the Las Vegas Strip, was close to reaching a tentative deal with the hotel workers union, the casino company’s CEO said as the clock ticked closer to a union deadline for a sweeping strike. “This deal, when announced, will do just that.”During a break in bargaining, the union’s chief contract negotiator said he welcomed Hornbuckle’s sentiments. The union caught a break at dawn Wednesday when it reached a tentative deal with Caesars that covers 10,000 workers at the company’s flagship Caesars Palace, as well as Flamingo, Harrah’s, Horseshoe, Paris Las Vegas, Planet Hollywood, Cromwell and Linq. But experts say a walkout isn’t likely now that the union has a blueprint for a contract after reaching its breakthrough deal with Caesars. That includes walkouts in Hollywood, UPS’ contentious negotiations that threatened to disrupt the nation’s supply chain, and the ongoing hotel workers strike at Detroit’s three casinos, including MGM Grand Detroit.
