Australian TV host Fiona MacDonald announced her own death at the age of 67 in a posthumous social media post on Thursday. The beloved host, who worked on the children's program “Wombat” and gameshow “It’s a Knockout,” died three years after being diagnosed with a motor neuron disease. There are various motor neuron diseases; the term refers to progressive neurological disorders that destroy motor neurons and cells. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and progressive bulbar palsy (PBP) are both examples of motor neuron diseases. She said the diagnosis came as a “shock” as MacDonald had no family history of motor neuron diseases.

I spent some time alone after things ended, but by the end of 2012, I was ready to re-embrace online dating. Within a few years, my fellow millennials and I were reportedly spending 10 hours a week on dating apps. "Dating apps are designed to be a miserable experience," Stephanie Rodgers, the founder of the forthcoming dating app Verb, said. Increasingly, it feels like dating apps make things more monotonous and cumbersome to incentivize us to pay for upgrades. And while dating apps' cost in terms of harassment, threats, and violence is paid disproportionately by women, its financial cost is disproportionately paid by men.

Tourists visit an ancient city gate in Beijing, China ahead of National Day. The stock market may be in the midst of one of its most remarkable turnarounds, but economists say reversing China’s economic downturn will require much more work. “Stimulating the stock market doesn’t really do much for the real economy in China. This was, perhaps, the closest thing the White Sox have had to a prideful moment all season. As The Athletic’s Jayson Stark noted, the White Sox have used 29 position players this season. After their most recent downturn — a 12-game skid — the White Sox besting the Mets for worst ever became a matter of when, not if. Getz insisted the White Sox are on the right trajectory and even said ownership will “potentially” invest more in the organizational infrastructure. Now members of this White Sox team will shoulder the burden of 121 losses and counting into an uncertain future.

The good news is that recent data suggests a decline in overdose deaths, the first significant drop in decades. Skyrocketing overdose deaths are nearly unavoidable, regardless of whether a state enforces tough penalties for drug possession or decriminalizes it. Since 2021, at least two-thirds of America’s 100,000 annual overdose deaths involved a synthetic opioid like fentanyl. Overdose deaths in the Northeast Deaths per 100,000 people Looking at regional overdose deaths shows this pattern clearly. It’s not coincidental that the exponential rise in overdose deaths has occurred in tandem with a profound increase in income inequality.

CNN —Despite pledging a “battle without limits” against Israel, Hezbollah’s response to back-to-back Israeli attacks appears to have been carefully calibrated. Hezbollah joined the fight against Israel out of solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza after Hamas’ October 7 attacks against Israel. Israel accused Hezbollah of firing the rocket, which came from the direction of Lebanon, but Hezbollah has “firmly” denied it was behind the strike. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu began to pivot from fighting Hamas in Gaza to Hezbollah in Lebanon, backed by bellicose allies on his extreme right. This week, another airstrike killed Ibrahim Qubaisi, another senior official who commanded Hezbollah’s missile units.

On Monday, Israel intensified its air campaign on Hezbollah, launching “extensive strikes” targeting the Iran-backed militant group in Lebanon. It is unclear how many of the casualties were civilians or Hezbollah militants, but many of the locations described by Israel as Hezbollah targets are also residential neighborhoods and villages. The nearly 500 killed on Monday alone is roughly half the number of Lebanese killed throughout the entire 34-day war between Israel and Hezbollah in 2006. Why is Israel attacking Lebanon? The US believes that neither Israel nor Hezbollah are interested in a full-scale war, but a major concern is that Iran, a key backer of Hezbollah, will get involved, US officials told CNN.

“Six-fifty yesterday morning, one of my township supervisors called me and wanted to know what I thought,” Dingell said. “That discussion brought me right back down to Earth.”Burned before by overconfidence, Democrats this cycle are running against two opponents. Huddled at their campaign headquarters in Wilmington, Delaware, the day after the debate, Harris’s campaign aides determined the event would likely do little to change the overall trajectory of the race. Campaign officials spent part of Wednesday looking through debate footage to identify moments that would make effective television ads. Tuesday’s debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump is the culmination of 75 days of utter and unprecedented campaign chaos — and the beginning of a 55-day race to Election Day through equally uncharted waters. The best-polling third-party candidate in a generation, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., saw his numbers collapse, and he is out of the race and supporting Trump. The sides even flipped on the debate rules, with the Harris campaign (unsuccessfully) pushing for open microphones during the whole debate after Biden’s team favored turning candidates’ mics off when it is not their turn. Harris’ campaign put a policy page on her website only on Monday. For making it through the past 75 days of chaos, America now gets 55 days of unpredictability with little precedent in modern history.

The Department of Veterans Affairs has clawed back billions of dollars that countless veterans were given as incentives to leave the military, including when it needed to downsize, according to new data obtained by NBC News. Disabled veterans have been told in the last 12 fiscal years to return nearly $3 billion in special separation pay — lump-sum incentives that were offered when the U.S. had to reduce its active-duty force or release slightly injured service members, the data shows. The justification of the recoupment rule carried over in the 1990s when other forms of special separation payments — unrelated to disabilities — were authorized. Those payments, including the Special Separation Benefit (SSB), were designed instead to help the Defense Department manage its force size. He was told to pay back the money in 2017 after he filed for VA disability for PTSD and other conditions.

Democrats Say the Joy Is Back. Kamala Harris’s campaign has been trying to get voters to feel the joy. “I would say it’s her energy; she’s a joyful, energetic person.”“It just feels really exciting to turn the corner,” she added. In its infancy, the United States was an act of political imagination — the idea that people could live free from tyranny, according to a set of clearly defined principles. Given what limited political imagination made possible, we must consider the bounty that could rise out of boundless vision. To imagine extravagant things is to want extravagant things. We have become so accustomed to mediocre political choices that we have forsaken the idea of sweeping change. We often forestall hope by detailing, at length, why the change we most want to see will never happen.

Struggling to feed her family after losing her job as a cleaner earlier this year, 56-year-old Norma Villarreal went to church Wednesday in the hardscrabble outskirts of Buenos Aires and waited in the pre-dawn darkness for over an hour to petition St. Cayetano, the patron saint of bread and work. Throughout decades of political change in Argentina, the annual Aug. 7 pilgrimage to St. Cayetano Sanctuary has served as a potent, and grim, reminder that in Argentina, economic despair remains a constant. But this year might be unique in one thing: The desperation over rising joblessness that drives Argentines to call on St. Cayetano has been matched by rage at the painful austerity program of libertarian President Javier Milei. While Milei has prioritized combating the country’s dizzying inflation rate — which fell in June to 4.2% month on month, the lowest since January 2022. Unemployment has become a growing concern as Milei’s government freezes public works projects and shutters ministries in his campaign to cut down the state.

Fifty years ago on Wednesday, the French high-wire artist Philippe Petit carried his life a quarter of a mile through the New York City sky on a tightrope. When asked why, he said it was simply because the World Trade Center towers were there. “If I see two towers, I have to walk,” he told The New York Times. We are living in high-wire times, with anxiety and fracture all around us, and it is the job of the artist to show that we can, in fact, get from one side to the other. He didn’t defy gravity; he aligned himself with it, and in so doing he allowed us to defy our own possible falling down.
