Read previewArtificial intelligence took the creator world by storm, but it looks like fewer creators are now buying into the hype. Earlier this month, the Swedish-based music company Epidemic Sound published a report finding that fewer social-media personalities were using AI tools like chatbots or transcription software in 2024 compared to the previous year. For example, creator Noah Jennings said using AI to generate content designs was actually more time-consuming than coming up with the ideas himself. Others, like lifestyle creator Joseph Arujo, had relegated using tools like ChatGPT for administrative tasks like formatting emails for corresponding with brands rather than creative work. Other creators had stopped using AI altogether for reasons like a lack of inclusivity.

"I have friends that say that TikTok Shop has ruined the app," Casey Lewis, a trends researcher, said. "It can be good — especially as TikTok moves to TikTok Shop — if they're able to capitalize on this shift and sell products more effectively to older users." Just because something is going viral on TikTok doesn't necessarily mean Gen Z is behind it. The same could be said of Gen Z, which would explain the generations' shared fascination with a time before smartphones and round-the-clock news. The Gen Z users I spoke with didn't seem particularly concerned about an influx of olds.

London CNN —UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced a snap general election for July 4 in a statement outside Downing Street on Wednesday evening, as his Conservative Party faces an uphill struggle to extend its 14 years in power. But a fall in inflation rates, announced earlier Wednesday, provided the backdrop for his announcement. The move will be welcomed by the buoyant Labour Party, led by Keir Starmer, which is soaring in the opinion polls and has sought to present itself as a reformed and moderate group that is ready for power. Sunak walks back inside on Wednesday after announcing the July 4 date for the election. But Johnson’s premiership collapsed after a string of scandals, paving the way for his then-finance minister Sunak to emerge as a frontrunner for the leadership.

In a Wednesday interview with CNBC's Jim Cramer, Williams-Sonoma CEO Laura Alber explained how her company handles a tough housing market. "The customer isn't shopping for as much furniture as they were because of the housing slump, but they are, you know, still updating their homes," Alber said. Williams-Sonoma owns several brands besides its own namesake homewares business, including West Elm and Pottery Barn. The company reported an earnings beat on Wednesday, but saw weakness in its Pottery Barn brand. Alber acknowledged that Pottery Barn was affected by high housing costs but said Williams-Sonoma is doing better than others in the industry.

The inferno consumed the wooden structure, situated in an Iron Age settlement, killing six animals penned in the stable. The presence of a horse in the stable suggested that these people were wealthier than some of their neighbors, Olesti Vila said. The site provides important insights into the daily lives of Iberian Iron Age populations in the Pyrenees at this pivotal time in history, Arnold said in an email. During the Iron Age, when people lived in wooden homes heated by fires, buildings often accidentally burned. “This is also an indication of some kind of conflict or some kind of violent aggression,” Olesti Vila said.

Growing up in Mexico, Marco Flores fantasized about the lowrider cars he saw in magazines, studying their colorful bodies and gleaming engine compartments. In a tribute, Mr. Flores eventually restored a Chevelle in electric blue — the same muscle car his father had owned — with the help of his children. Now his custom-made creations, which he designs and fabricates after work in his garage in Port Chester, N.Y., are featured in those same lowrider magazines. His blue Chevelle “represents my entire childhood and the passion I have for cars,” said Mr. Flores, 55, who works six days a week at a Mamaroneck auto body shop. Just as Mr. Flores shared his skills with his children, many fans embrace the scene as a family-friendly way to honor traditions and celebrate accomplishments, adding hydraulics in the trunk, bright paint across the body and iconography like Our Lady of Guadalupe on the hood.

Neuralink deemed the risk low enough for a redesign not to be merited, the sources added. Neuralink is testing its implant to give paralyzed patients the ability to use digital devices by thinking alone, a prospect that could help people with spinal cord injuries. The company said last week that the implant's tiny wires, which are thinner than a human hair, retracted from a patient's brain in its first human trial, resulting in fewer electrodes that could measure brain signals. The company said it managed to restore the implant's ability to monitor its patient's brain signals by making changes that included modifying its algorithm to be more sensitive. In the weeks after the surgery, "a number of threads retracted from the brain," Neuralink said in a blog update last week.

Both KOSA and the Protecting Kids on Social Media Act also propose parental monitoring tools to help guardians observe their children’s online activities. SoftBank Group subsidiary Arm is planning to launch artificial intelligence chips by next year, according to a Nikkei Asia report, as the battle for AI chip dominance intensifies. SoftBank is in discussion with contract manufacturers including Taiwan's TSMC to produce the AI chips, the report added. Arm designs the fundamental architecture upon which the chips are built. The company will bear the initial development costs of the AI chips, which could reach "hundreds of billions of yen," according to the report. After a mass-production system has been set up, Arm's AI chip business could be "spun off and placed under SoftBank."

Porsche’s iconic 911 is going hybrid
  + stars: | 2024-05-13 | by ( Peter Valdes-Dapena | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
A hybrid Porsche 911, with its gas engine assisted by at least one battery-powered electric motor, will officially be revealed in an online event on May 28. Porsche itself already sells plug-in hybrid models like the Cayenne e-Hybrid SUV and Panamera e-Hybrid four-door car but a hybrid 911 is another matter. This new hybrid model will be the closest Porsche can get to an electric 911 without raising those sorts of philosophical questions. But we do know the hybrid 911 is clearly faster than the current purely gas-powered 911. The faster time indicates the hybrid 911 has greater power due to the addition of electric assistance.

Editor’s Note: This article was originally published by The Business of Fashion, an editorial partner of CNN Style. The design was upcycled from vintage Chanel scarves by stylist Logan Horne, whose brand, J. Logan Home, specializes in refashioning heritage luxury accessories. Fashion brands' legal claims are varied but ultimately boil down to concerns that third parties are free-riding on brands’ valuable IP in ways that could risk confusing consumers, eroding primary sales and tarnishing or diluting carefully cultivated marks. Some big brands, like Prada, Gucci and indeed Levi’s, have already dabbled with upcycling collections and programs of their own. These days, she says she’s having about a conversation a week with brands interested in exploring collaboration, but the industry moves slowly.

CNN —President Joe Biden is facing backlash from lawmakers in both parties over his ultimatum that a major Israeli offensive in the city of Rafah would result in a shut-off of some US weapons. “So if you’re worried about Palestinian casualties, the stated policy here actually doesn’t make a ton of sense,” Vance said. The president’s announcement amounted to a turning point in US-Israeli ties since the seven-month conflict between Israel and Hamas began in October. Still, the president’s aides said the message shouldn’t have been a surprise to their intended recipients in Israel given repeated warnings to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. “I think President Biden has taken forceful action – so much so there’s been a lot of blowback for his recent public statement.”CNN’s Kit Maher, Aileen Graef, Kevin Liptak, Jennifer Hansler and Kylie Atwood contributed to this report.

CNN —A former US Marine pilot fighting extradition from Australia on US charges of training Chinese military pilots to land on aircraft carriers, unknowingly worked with a Chinese hacker, his lawyer said. The lawyer’s filing supports Reuters reporting linking Duggan to convicted Chinese defense hacker Su Bin. The case will be heard in a Sydney court this month, two years after his arrest in rural Australia at a time when Britain was warning its former military pilots not to work for China. Su Bin, arrested in Canada in 2014, pleaded guilty in 2016 to theft of US military aircraft designs by hacking major US defense contractors.
