Maria Korneeva | Moment | Getty ImagesThe Biden administration has set a key deadline for student loan borrowers hoping to get forgiveness. "The opportunity to consolidate loans will help many more borrowers to qualify for student loan forgiveness," said higher education expert Mark Kantrowitz. In normal times, consolidating your student loans can be a terrible move for those hoping to get rid of their debt as your forgiveness timeline is restarted. What to know about consolidating your student loansAll federal student loans are eligible for consolidation, including Federal Family Education Loans, Parent Plus loans and Perkins Loans, Kantrowitz said. Consolidating your loans shouldn't increase your monthly payment, since your bill under an income-driven repayment plan is based on your earnings and not your total debt, Kantrowitz said.

Income-driven repayment plansIncome-driven repayment plans, which date to 1994, set borrowers' monthly payments based on a share of their discretionary income. "The loan servicers weren't keeping track of the number of qualifying payments," Kantrowitz said in a previous CNBC interview. watch nowThe Biden administration has been evaluating millions of borrowers' loan accounts to see if they should have had their debt forgiven. Most people with federal student loans qualify for income-driven repayment plans, and can review the options and apply at Studentaid.gov. Public Service Loan ForgivenessNavigating the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program has been famously difficult.

Carbon Trading Opens Loophole in Paris Climate Accord
  + stars: | 2023-12-04 | by ( Matthew Dalton | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
When the South American nation of Guyana wanted to sell millions of carbon-offset credits to preserve its rainforests, government officials knew they had a problem: The country’s lush Amazonian forests were actually in good shape. Guyana’s rate of deforestation was already low, meaning its forests wouldn’t yield much under standard methodologies for calculating carbon credits. So its government chose a new method that allows a large adjustment for countries with healthy forests. The change raised the credits that Guyana could issue sixfold. Guyana sold 37.5 million of them last year to U.S. oil giant Hess for at least $750 million, and is now shopping the remaining two thirds to countries facing pressure to comply with the landmark Paris climate accord, officials say.

With a "goodwill" repair, Tesla essentially foots the bill for labor, parts or accessories given to keep a customer happy. "Were Tesla to accurately categorize its 'goodwill' repairs as warranty repairs, it would likely need to restate earnings for every quarter since at least 2017," the tipsters wrote in their submission. In one example, the tipsters said screenshots showed other Tesla employees changed the status of material used in manufacturing from "scrap" to "work in progress." In another example, the complaint said screenshots showed Tesla employees had manually changed the status of "used" cars to "new" in a program that tracked vehicle deliveries data. In correspondence to the agency expanding on their complaint, the whistleblowers alleged this raises questions about the firm's independence and objectivity in judging Tesla's financials.

Opinion: The Deep Space Network is in trouble
  + stars: | 2023-09-11 | by ( Opinion Don Lincoln | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
The Deep Space Network, or DSN, is an interconnected set of three radio telescope facilities spread across the globe. Indeed, without the DSN, NASA’s robotic exploration of deep space would simply not be possible. On the contrary, if humanity is going to once again venture into deep space, it will be crucial to be able to maintain a radio link with those intrepid explorers. Both of those missions, indeed all deep space programs, depend on reliable communication, or they will fail. The Deep Space Network is NASA’s link to the planets, and it needs additional support if we ever hope to boldly go where no one has gone before.

The orange juice was also a little pulpy and separated overnight—a common occurrence with both centrifugal juicers we tested. Others you should know aboutGreat multiuse juicerKuvings’s 4-in-1 masticating juicer comes with attachments to make smoothies, sorbets and nut milks, too. Masticating juicers use a rotating, screw-shaped augur to crush and press fresh produce to extract juice, while centrifugal juicers rely on a high-speed spinning metal blade to pulverize produce into a mesh filter. Masticating juicers are slower and cost more, but often have higher yields and are therefore less wasteful (which we found to be true in our testing). Centrifugal juicers are faster and more powerful, but create foamier juice that’s more likely to separate.

While the summer signals music festivals and vacations for many, this year it will also mean the return of federal student loan payments. Interest hasn't been accruing and borrowers haven't been required to make payments on their federal student loans since March 2020. But as the federal government winds down its pandemic relief, student loan borrowers are bracing to resume payments, or start making them for the first time. If you graduated or left school between March 2020 and now, you may have never been required to make a payment on your federal student loans. If you're not sure, you can log into your Federal Student Aid (FSA) account and scroll down to the "My Loan Servicers" section, or call the Federal Student Aid Information Center (FSAIC) at 1-800-433-3243.
In the optimist camp is Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, who told CNN’s Fareed Zakaria last week a damaging recession can be averted. “I do think there is a path to bring down inflation while maintaining what I think all of us would regard as a strong labor market.”After months of inflation at close to 40-year highs, prices are cooling. By most measures, the job market is stronger today than it was in February 2020, before the Covid pandemic crashed the global economy. “I think the strong labor market and bringing down inflation are compatible goals,” Yellen said. Another read is that a recession, if there is one, will be mild and brief, without a big spike in the jobless rate.
But there's a glaring catch to my support for pay transparency: I haven't actually practiced it in my own life. To find out why, I decided to commemorate the dawning age of salary transparency by telling pretty much everyone in my life what I earn. Norway responded to pay transparency with yet another level of transparency, and that brought down the level of snooping.. Thanks to its nationwide experiment, Norway has been fertile ground for scholars trying to measure the consequences of extreme pay transparency. But I do believe that as more states implement pay-disclosure laws — and as Gen Z increasingly comes to dominate the workforce — salary transparency is going to become the new norm.
ET on Sunday, clocks in the U.S. will turn back one hour as daylight saving time ends, marking the beginning of winter's dark evenings. Sleep experts don't support year-round daylight saving timeIdeally, the sun should reach its highest point at noon, according to sleep experts. Then at night, daylight saving can lead people to go to bed later, which can delay the body’s production of melatonin. These cumulative health risks likely influenced Mexico’s Senate vote last week to eliminate daylight saving time there. The original argument for delaying daylight doesn't hold upThe U.S. first adopted daylight saving time in 1918 to save oil and electricity during World War I.
