An airplane encounterAmy and Mike met on March 23, 2006, on an airplane about to depart Los Angeles International Airport. But then Mike apologized – half jokingly, half sincere – for ruining Amy’s flight. First in the coffee line, and later as they walked through the airport, Amy and Mike continued chatting. Mike didn’t want Amy to leave, but Amy wasn’t going to abandon a great career opportunity. Later this year, Amy and Mike hope to take their kids to Japan – an 11 hour plus flight from LAX.

“The industry is evolving,” says Desmond Cawley, hotel manager at SIRO, One Za’abeel. This kind of light therapy treatment has its roots in NASA’s experimentation with red light therapy in the 1990s to boost plant growth in space and help heal wounds in astronauts. Rebecca Cairns/CNNEven at SIRO, with all its cutting-edge tech, Cawley has observed a surge of interest in mindfulness activities like meditation. Of course, at SIRO, there’s even a high-tech alternative to this: “vibroacoustic therapy,” the sci-fi equivalent of a gong bath. Tech to help you disconnect might seem excessive, but for SIRO, the integration of health data is the future of wellness, providing guests with a data-driven, personalized wellness program.

CNN —Same-sex sexual behavior has been observed in more than 1,500 animal species, but a new study has found that it is massively underreported by researchers. Observations of this same-sex behavior in animals, such as sexual mounting and genital touching, date back to the 1700s and 1800s. In a study published Thursday in the journal PLOSOne, a team of researchers at the University of Toronto, Northwestern University and the University of Warsaw found that experts who study animal behavior are underreporting and rarely publishing their observations of same-sex sexual behavior. The study surveyed 65 experts and found that 77% of them observed same-sex sexual behaviors in the species they studied. Davis added that there have been other obstacles that get in the way of documenting same-sex behaviors among animals.

With any luck, if your employer has instituted a Summer Fridays policy, you’ll get to knock off work early or even take the whole day off. Only 13% of US employees, for instance, said their organizations had Summer Fridays, in a 2023 survey commissioned by consulting and research firm Gartner. Among US employers, a survey last year from HR consulting firm Mercer found that only 19% said they offered summer working hours, up from 15% in 2021. Nevertheless, some employees may have even better options today, thanks to the transformation of work culture spurred by the pandemic. But Caitlin Duffy, senior director of Gartner’s HR practice, said she wouldn’t be surprised if Summer Fridays become less of a featured benefit from employers because flexible work has become so much more prevalent.

While the expansion of legal sports betting has made gambling more accessible, it's also helped spot infractions like these. The MLB also said it was tipped off about Marcano's betting activity by a legal sports-betting operator, ESPN reported. "When you are operating in the dark, you have no idea what is actually happening — if refs are partaking in illegal betting or players are partaking in betting," Slane said. Many US states where sports betting is legal require gambling companies to work with a licensed independent integrity-monitoring service, like IC360 or Sportradar, to identify suspicious betting activity. They could be college football players betting on the NFL, or NFL players betting on games their teams weren't playing in.

CDK's cyber outage hits U.S. auto dealers for second day in a row

A cyber outage at retail technology and software provider CDK entered its second consecutive day on Thursday, impacting automobile dealers across the United States, the affected companies said on Thursday. "The CDK outage is impacting automotive dealerships across the U.S. and Canada, including a portion of BMW Group dealers," a spokesperson for BMW North America told Reuters. CDK told Reuters it was working to reinstate its services and get its dealers back to business "as quickly as possible". The company, which provides software to car dealerships, briefly shut down all its systems on Wednesday, saying it was investigating a cyber incident. Investment firm Brookfield Business Partners bought CDK in April 2022 for $6.41 billion in a cash deal, taking the last major publicly traded provider of software to auto dealers and manufacturers private.

Some concerning candle patterns for leading technology names have caused me to focus on potential downside targets for the S & P 500 . To be clear, this is a short-term pattern, and is really just intended to inform our thinking for the next couple trading sessions. The most important level to watch is S & P 5,200, which would represent about a 5% pullback from the recent market peak. A move below S & P 5200 would cause me to revisit long positions and start to raise cash due to an elevated risk of a correction. If and when the S & P pushes below 4950, I would be positioned way more defensively, waiting for some signs of accumulation to emerge.

South Korea has a substantial conventional arms manufacturing sector and is the world's 10th biggest arms exporter, per the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute. While the expansion of legal sports betting has made gambling more accessible, it's also helped spot infractions like these. The MLB also said it was tipped off about Marcano's betting activity by a legal sports-betting operator, ESPN reported. There's little data available to show whether gambling violations like these occur more or less often in the age of legal gambling, in part because they weren't easily tracked before 2018. They could be college football players betting on the NFL, or NFL players betting on games their teams weren't playing in. As sports-betting continues to expand in more states and the industry evolves, there may be more gambling scandals to come.

The floor of the United States House of Representatives is supposed to be a dignified place, where lawmakers refer to each other as “gentleman” or “gentle lady,” speak only to the presiding officer, and never engage in personally disparaging remarks against rivals, an offense known as “engaging in personalities.”But what happens when the leader of one party is a convicted criminal whom a jury has found guilty of things that would normally be considered unmentionable on the House floor? The history-making felony conviction of former President Donald J. Trump has raised some historic questions for the House’s rules of decorum, which have existed for centuries but can be bent to the will of whichever party controls the majority-driven chamber. The Republicans who now hold the majority have used those rules to impose what is essentially a gag order against talking about Mr. Trump’s hush-money payments to a porn actress or about the fact that he is a felon at all, notwithstanding that those assertions are no longer merely allegations but the basis of a jury’s guilty verdict. Doing so, they have declared, is a violation of House rules.

Food hoarding can vary depending on the access the person has to buying food, Daigle said. It is interesting to talk about food hoarding after the lockdowns of the Covid-19 pandemic, because food hoarding served a purpose in that time, Daigle said. Some people engaging in food hoarding behaviors may isolate out of shame or feel more comfortable being around food versus being out in public. Some eating disorders have food hoarding as part of their behaviors, and the same experience may drive people to cope with both hoarding and eating disorder behaviors, she said. But shortages of other things children need may also lead to food hoarding, Daigle said.

Banking regulators on Friday disclosed that they found weaknesses in the resolution plans of four of the eight largest American lenders. The Federal Reserve and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation said that the so-called living wills — plans for unwinding huge institutions in the event of distress or failure — of Citigroup , JPMorgan Chase , Goldman Sachs and Bank of America filed in 2023 were inadequate. Regulators found fault with the way each of the banks planned to unwind their massive derivatives portfolios. The living wills are a key regulatory exercise mandated in the aftermath of the 2008 global financial crisis. CNN —Kenya’s independent policing review body has launched an investigation into the death of a protester who was shot during the mass anti-tax demonstrations in the capital Nairobi on Thursday. The incident has sparked widespread outrage and intensified scrutiny of police actions amid the escalating protests. The man named by authorities as Rex Masai was present at one of many protests against a controversial finance bill going through parliament, and was allegedly shot with live ammunition by a police officer. Earlier in the week, mass arrests were recorded in Nairobi, with over 200 people detained by police, according to civil society groups. “The Authority has this morning launched investigations into the fatal shooting and our investigation team has since established contact with the family of Mr. Masai,” the IPOA statement said.

The multiplier effect of culture in New York is huge both in economic and human terms. But arts funding does not consistently rise to meet it. From one vantage, the city’s cultural funding can look robust. Over the past decade, the money allocated to the Department of Cultural Affairs has increased considerably, as City Hall officials will point out. And at any rate, between 2023 and 2024, the overall budget decreased by $7 million to $241 million, as the migrant crisis required cuts across municipal divisions.
