US Senator Bob Menendez (center right), Democrat of New Jersey, leaves with his wife Nadine Menendez the Manhattan Federal Court, in New York City following his arraignment on March 11, 2024. Sen. Bob Menendez's criminal trial will continue as scheduled on May 6 — but without the New Jersey Democrat's wife and co-defendant Nadine Menendez. Nadine Menendez had requested the postponement earlier this week, and prosecutors said they were fine delaying the trial until the summer. Lawyers for Nadine Menendez argued in a separate motion that a joint trial would "undoubtedly prejudice Ms. Menendez's right to defend herself." In addition to health concerns, Stein said Nadine Menendez needs new attorneys because her current lawyers could end up being called as witnesses related to an obstruction count against her.

Johnson isn't buying arguments from the bill's Republican backers that she didn't inspire the proposed change to a longstanding law. Republican state lawmakers who favor the ban have argued that winning twice often means abandoning the lower office, creating a costly special election. Johnson narrowly escaped expulsion last year for her role in a pro-gun control protest inside the Tennessee House chamber. Republican lawmakers are considering changes that target Jones and Pearson, too. HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — The resignation of a Republican lawmaker in the previously deadlocked Pennsylvania House of Representatives has put the balance of power back to Democrats, ahead of a special election next week for another vacant position. A Democrat's resignation last year had the House deadlocked at 101-101, and a special election next week will fill that vacancy. Photos You Should See View All 21 ImagesThe resignation queues up another special election for the chamber, which will be scheduled as early as two months from now. Next week’s special election in Bucks County, for a seat that has historically favored Democrats, will now either strengthen Democrats’ hold, or return the chamber to a deadlock until the election for Adams’ seat. In a statement, a spokesperson for the Speaker of the House said information about the election would be forthcoming.

By Kanishka SinghWASHINGTON (Reuters) - Robert Hur, the special counsel appointed to investigate whether President Joe Biden improperly handled sensitive government documents, is a former high-ranking Justice Department official with experience in prosecuting sensitive leak investigations. On Thursday, he concluded that probe and found that Biden retained classified materials about Afghanistan after leaving the vice presidency in 2017 but said he will not be criminally charged. Hur was appointed by Donald Trump in 2018 as the chief federal law enforcement officer in Maryland and left that position in early 2021. Under Hur, the Maryland U.S. attorney's office prosecuted the case of former National Security Agency contractor Harold Martin, who stole huge amounts of classified material from U.S. intelligence agencies. A graduate of Stanford Law School and Harvard College, Hur served as top aide to then-Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein before his appointment as the U.S. attorney in Maryland.

When Rep. Dean Phillips first began making noise about launching a quixotic presidential campaign, the mood among House Democrats might have best been described as anger and disbelief. Since launching his campaign, Phillips has generally been absent from Capitol Hill, effectively cutting down Democrats' ranks by one seat. AdvertisementOn Wednesday evening, Sen. Tina Smith made light of her Minnesota colleague's recent struggles in a video message to the Congressional Dinner, an annual gathering of reporters and lawmakers. At first, Phillips's campaign seemed to constitute a real threat to Biden, even if he was unlikely to actually defeat him. Brian Schatz of Hawaii released an amendment to a forthcoming national security bill that affirms US support for a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict. "What will determine the future of Israel and Palestine is whether or not there's hope," Schatz told reporters on Wednesday. "And the two-state solution has to be that hope." It comes after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Israel's security needs were "irreconcilable with a Palestinian state." "My insistence is what has prevented — over the years — the establishment of a Palestinian state that would have constituted an existential danger to Israel," Netanyahu later said.

Beshear's national profile rose after his convincing reelection win over GOP challenger Daniel Cameron last November. The newly formed 501(c)(4) group called “Heckbent” will promote key Beshear proposals by supporting grassroots advocacy, said Eric Hyers, his chief political strategist. There was no such group to promote Beshear's agenda during his first term, when his notable legislative successes often were overshadowed by his many policy disputes with GOP lawmakers. The governor's record of legislative achievements is more checkered — something the new group will try to change with messaging that could focus on areas represented by GOP lawmakers. Biden's disapproval ratings did not surpass his approval ratings until he withdrew from Afghanistan. Similarly, Democrats have increasingly disapproved of Biden since Hamas attacked Israel. Month after month, an average of his national approval ratings stayed double digits above his disapproval ratings. That is, until the US began its process of completely withdrawing its military forces from Afghanistan, coinciding with Biden's approval ratings consistently declining in that same period of time. A recent YouGov survey offers a clue as to why Biden's approval rating amongst Democrats is falling.

DeRosa said Cuomo “could not stomach” how state government was being run after his resignation. DeRosa is particularly critical of state Attorney General Letitia James, the Democrat who released a report, crafted by outside lawyers, which concluded Cuomo had sexually harassed 11 women. The money raised is similar to the $72 million Biden and the Democratic Party raised in the prior quarter, though the April-to-June period was shorter by 25 days because Biden launched his campaign in late April. Fundraising sums announced by Biden's campaign cannot be directly compared with Republican rivals because they include party accounts controlled by Biden allies. The Biden campaign, along with other candidates, are required to submit more detailed financial records to the Federal Election Commission by later on Sunday. Earlier this month, Trump said his campaign raised over $45.5 million in the July-to-September quarter. Biden's campaign has focused its resources on boosting grassroots fundraising amid questions around their ability to bring in small-dollar donors, which often signal enthusiasm for a campaign.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Federal Trade Commission on Wednesday proposed a rule to ban any hidden and bogus junk fees, which can mask the total cost of concert tickets, hotel rooms and utility bills. President Joe Biden has made the removal of these fees a priority of his administration. The Democrat's effort has led to a legislative push and a spate of initiatives aimed at helping consumers. The FTC estimates that consumers waste 50 million hours each year searching for the total price for tickets and lodging. After Biden discussed junk fees at a February meeting with aides, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce issued a statement that the “Washington-knows-best approach” would lead to fewer choices for consumers and make the economy less competitive.

RFK Jr. is now running for president as an independent, and Republicans view him as a threat. The RNC issued a memo listing 23 different reasons why Republicans shouldn't support him. The 23rd point: he denied the validity of two presidential elections. "He called the 2000 presidential election stolen 'under a cloud of dirty tricks' and said Republicans 'fix[ed]' the 2004 presidential election," reads a memo released by the RNC on Monday.
