If you feel like you’re drowning in neologisms lately, you’re not delulu. The uptick in coinages has been noted by culture writers and TikTok users alike. There’s even a meme for slang overload, though it has been around since 2020. Girl dinner, an informal phrase credited to the TikTok user Olivia Maher that describes a light, charcuterie board-like meal, was inducted as an entry on Dictionary.com this month. It joins other newly inducted informal nouns and slang terms — including bussin’, the ick and pretty privilege — whose rise has been driven at least in part by social media.

Tesla's Cybertruck still makes no sense. Elon Musk livestreamed a delivery event for the pickup truck on Thursday. How it makes sense for Tesla, Elon Musk, or people's daily commutes is still anyone's guess. On its website, Tesla describes the vehicle as being "built for any planet," thanks to its durable and rugged design. "The truck looks absolutely awful.

Call it magical thinking or manifesting, but the belief that people can influence their reality through sheer will has existed for centuries. Now, there’s a new term for this idea: “delulu.”Derived from the word delusional, delulu first gained popularity this summer as shorthand for unrelenting confidence. (Posts with the word have more than five billion views on TikTok.) Though it has roots in the K-pop community to describe a fan’s parasocial relationship with a celebrity, delulu is now widely used by Gen Z-ers and young millennials to describe the process of making the seemingly impossible possible — or at least of coming to believe that they can. In the words of Bianca Bernardo, a 23-year-old content creator in Los Angeles: “May all your delulu come trululu, because being delulu is the solulu.”

Gen Zers are saying they need to be "delulu" to get ahead in their careers. It's something Gen Z thinks you have to embrace if you want your life to go the way you planned, including your career. As my Gen Z colleague Sawdah Bhaimiya wrote: "Being delusional is more than just a fun trend on social media. Employment-wise, Gen Z is not in a bad spot. Gen Z workers are stereotyped as being "difficult," "lazy," or socially inept.

Tiktokers are saying that being "delulu" or delusional can help you achieve professional success. Being delusional – or as TikTok users like to say, "delulu" – is a technique in which having radical self-confidence can help you bag a dream job or get that long-awaited promotion. Although it seems counter-productive, TikTok users are lapping up the advice – the hashtag #delulu has 1.6 billion views while #delulugirl has 233.8 million views. She concluded: "The moral of the story is to just be 'delulu' because you're already jobless so it can only go up from here." Another user posted a video saying she quit her full-time job with no plan lined up after but she is "in delulu land thinking everything will work out."
