Read previewDiners are cutting back on meals out during the week and saving the money for the weekends instead, a restaurant executive says. Jim Holthouser, CEO of GoTo Foods, formerly known as Focus Brands, said that some diners had been limiting their spending. GoTo Foods owns Cinnabon, Auntie Anne's, Jamba, Moe's Southwest Grill, McAlister's Deli, Schlotzsky's, and Carvel. The data only compares restaurant spending in 2019 and 2023, and doesn't show how this has changed in recent months. Estimated retail sales from GoTo Foods' licensing partners totaled about $1.5 billion in 2023, or just over a quarter of total sales across its brand portfolio.

Spicy plus sweet give you “Swicy.” And yes, brands are trying to make it a thing as they look for ways to stretch out the spicy trend. Starbucks in the spring also introduced limited-time hot honey drinks, made with wildflower honey infused with chili peppers, such as Hot Honey Affogato and Hot Honey Espresso Martini to the menu at its Starbucks Reserve roasteries and select US stores. Nestle has also trotted out recent spicy innovations such as California Pizza Kitchen’s hot honey croissant crust pizza, Stouffer’s spicy nacho mac and Hot Pockets x Hot Ones. “Americans have made cult-favorites out of condiments like Sriracha and hot honey.

Count Baked by Melissa founder Melissa Ben-Ishay among the entrepreneurial success stories founded on getting out of the corporate rat race. Before starting her company, Ben-Ishay worked at an ad agency in New York City – a role she felt unfulfilled in. At the time, every cupcake came from her tiny New York City apartment kitchen. The cafe owner became a shareholder in Baked by Melissa, and the company was able to continue using the space for years. A year after it moved into the Cafe Bari space, Baked by Melissa opened its second location in Union Square.

Kostas Fostieris grew wistful as he remembered the workday crowds that once flocked to Greek Deli & Catering, a small restaurant a few blocks from the White House that he has operated for 35 years. At lunch, the line would stretch down the block, Mr. Fostieris said. But then the coronavirus pandemic swept the nation, and the lunch crowds vanished. “It’s like the day and night,” Mr. Fostieris lamented as he sat against a wall adorned with signed photographs of the current and former presidents as well as a plethora of framed reviews — some faded, all glowing — from newspapers, magazines and guidebooks. When asked if business on certain weekdays was especially slow, Mr. Fostieris answered quickly: “Every day.”

CNN —Many people love their ultraprocessed foods. More than 70% of the US food supply is made of ultraprocessed food. But a diet heavy in ultraprocessed food isn’t good for us, science has shown. Eating ultraprocessed foods raises the risk of developing or dying from dozens of health conditions, according to a February review covering nearly 10 million people. The no-fly list of ultraprocessed food is loaded with store-bought chips, sugar-packed yogurts and candy-filled trail mix.

Columbus low-sodium turkey: $5.99I like that packaged turkey stays fresh in the fridge. Kaitlin StevensI don't often run to the deli for lunch meat because it's kind of pricey. Instead, I buy prepackaged turkey at Trader Joe's. It's great for making quick meals like sandwiches, snack plates (with cheese, fruits, and veggies), and breakfast scrambles. I've also found that it tends to stay fresh in my fridge for a while, which is good since I'm the only one eating it.

When it comes to ballpark bites, I'm as frugal as it gets. Any trip to a baseball game starts at a deli so I can grab a sandwich to bring into the stadium. So why are we now feeding Lunchables to children as part of the National School Lunch Program (NSLP)? We are proud of Lunchables and stand by the quality and integrity that goes into making them,” Kraft Heinz said. In Canada, for example, a country that often outperforms the US in public health measures such as vaccination rates, there is no national food program for children. Meals that adhered to a higher nutritional standard were also thrown away less, according to a study published in Childhood Obesity in 2015. A modeling study published in Public Health Nutrition in 2022 estimates a 20% tax would reduce purchases of UPFs by 24%.

Moving away from a major city, Moretti found, can be terrible for your career. The market for WFH jobs has cratered, putting everyone who moved away from big cities at risk. Those who moved away from big cities effectively gave up their career insurance. In a big city, you also run into people who work for other companies in your industry — on the bus, at the bar, in line at the deli. "The benefits of being a big city," Moretti tells me, "have been underappreciated" during the pandemic.

But a new report from Consumer Reports said it recently compared the nutritional profiles of two Lunchables kits served in schools and found they have even higher levels of sodium than the Lunchables kits consumers can buy in stores. The non-profit consumer group said it has petitioned the US Department of Agriculture, which oversees the federally assisted school meal program, to remove Lunchables food kits from school cafeterias, as a result. The introduction of Lunchables in schools came amid proposed changes to school food guidelines by the USDA, which oversees the federally assisted school meal program. The proposed changes aimed to reduce added sugars and sodium levels in school-provided lunches. Food additives are considered “generally recognized as safe” (GRAS) by the US Food and Drug Administration, but not everyone agrees.

A diet high in ultra-processed foods has been linked to a range of health concernsNutritionist Rob Hobson eats as few UPFs as possible, focusing on whole foods where he can. AdvertisementA nutritionist who limits ultra-processed foods in his diet as much as possible, and wrote a book on how others can do the same, shared what he used to eat for lunch versus what he has now. Rob Hobson, a UK-based nutritionist, cut down on ultra-processed foods about a year ago after learning how many everyday items fell into this category and the potential health risks they could pose. But it's important to note that studies have only identified a link and can't confirm that processed meat causes these illnesses.

London CNN —British business groups are warning that newly announced post-Brexit charges on plant and animal imports could push up food prices not long after food inflation came down from double-digit rates. The port and the undersea tunnel beneath the English Channel handle the majority of UK food imports. Annual UK food price inflation topped 19% in March 2023, the highest rate in 45 years, and stood at more than 10% as recently as in October. Some are already “deciding that it is too expensive or too much hassle to serve the UK,” he told CNN. A government spokesperson said the new charges “were at the bottom end of the range” discussed with UK businesses during a consultation period last summer.

Why It’s So Expensive to Live in Phoenix

In the five years since they began their life together in the desert sprawl of greater Phoenix, Devon Lawrence and Eren Mendoza have bounced from one itinerant home to another. They have camped alongside a freeway off-ramp, using a gas station sink as their bath and a plastic tarp as their refuge from the relentless sun. For the last two years, they have crammed into rooms at motels, paying as much as $650 a week. Ms. Mendoza and Mr. Lawrence are both 32, and both have jobs. Yet they have been stymied in their reach for a modest dream: They cannot find an affordable home in a safe neighborhood in Phoenix, where rents have roughly doubled over the last decade.

These advocates said the main question from Republican lawmakers is whether the food industry supports the bill. "Voluntary initiatives were a great first start in socializing this idea of consumer confusion over date labels," she said.
