Hamas said it told Egyptian and Qatari negotiators that it has approved a cease-fire proposal to halt the war in Gaza. Israel is examining the proposal that Hamas approved and has not confirmed whether it would accept or reject it, an Israeli official told NBC News. Hostage release negotiations intensified over the weekend, with facilitation from U.S. CIA Director William Burns, alongside mediators from Egypt and Qatar. U.S. officials have repeatedly warned Israel against an offensive in Rafah, where millions of civilians have taken refuge. President Joe Biden reiterated that stance on a half-hour Monday call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, which took place before Hamas had announced its approval of a cease-fire proposal.

The deadly Israeli strike on an aid convoy that killed seven workers for the relief group World Central Kitchen in the Gaza Strip shook official Washington this week. It prompted President Biden to issue his sharpest public criticism of Israel to date and spurred Israel’s military to make a rare admission of fault. It also revealed the power of something that is usually an afterthought in national and global politics: food. On Thursday, Biden held a tense call with Netanyahu, threatening to place conditions on future support for the country. Hours later, Israel said it would permit more aid deliveries in Gaza.

Though 120 countries, an overwhelming majority of the United Nations, voted Friday for a resolution to call for a "sustained humanitarian truce" in Gaza, Israel has so far refused international calls for a cease-fire.

Russia is likely moving naval operations away from Crimea amid Ukrainian attacks, UK intel said. Russian naval aviation is attempting to assert Russian dominance over the Black Sea, the MOD added. AdvertisementAdvertisementA UK intelligence assessment said that some of Russia's naval operations in the Black Sea have been relocated following recent Ukraine attacks on its Crimean base. The UK's Ministry of Defence said on Monday that the threats had likely pushed some of Russia's Black Sea fleet activities to move to the port of Novorossiysk, on Russia's western coast. Russian shelling on Tuesday morning killed a man and a woman in the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson, the local prosecutor's office said.

U.S. reviewing whether Ukraine war documents were leaked

A member of the Ukrainian special force engages in zeroing his weapon prior to a mission, amid Russia?s attack on Ukraine, in the region of Bakhmut, Ukraine, April 6, 2023. They are not war plans and they provide no details on any planned Ukraine offensive. If the published documents are authentic to any degree, however, the leak of classified data is troubling and raises questions about what other information about the Ukraine war — or any coming offensive — could be distributed. The Justice Department released a statement Friday night saying, "We have been in communication with the Department of Defense related to this matter and have begun an investigation." One U.S. official said the documents resemble data produced daily by the Joint Staff, although some numbers are wrong.
Kyiv is slated to get several 30 mm gun trucks and mobile laser-guided rocket systems. These weapons are part of a new $2.6 billion security package announced by the Pentagon. Though the gun trucks are new, truck-mounted weaponry will not be a ground-breaking addition to Ukraine's arsenal of American weapon systems. Ukraine's military said in a daily update on Wednesday that Russian forces launched 17 Shahed-136 drones in an attack and that 14 of them were shot down by Kyiv's air defenses. The US official said that this week's new security package "includes important capabilities for air defense and to counter Russian unmanned aerial systems."

The ammunition was being made outside Ukraine with the co-operation of an unnamed NATO country, state-owned Ukroboronprom said. It said the shells had been made to fulfil an order from Ukraine's defence ministry. This creates an acute need for new sources of ammunition supply, as most NATO tanks use a different calibre -- while the vast majority of 125-mm round stocks are held by Russia and other countries who would not supply Ukraine. Ukroboronprom said this is the second type of munition which it had started to make in co-operation with a NATO member state. In February, it announced the start of joint production of 120-mm mortar rounds, again with an unnamed NATO partner.
The man, a military officer, is being held without bail while an investigation is underway. According to a press release from the Specialized Prosecutor's Office in the Military and Defence Sphere of the Western Region, the senior military officer has been accused of treason. "This information helped the Russians counter the Ukrainian military on one of the areas of the front," the Specialized Prosecutor's Office said. "The suspect was exposed 'red-handed' during another attempt to report to the enemy," the Specialized Prosecutor's Office said. "He swore loyalty to Ukraine and then betrayed," the Specialized Prosecutor's Office said.
