Carlos Sainz of Ferrari during second practice ahead of the Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix at Las Vegas Strip Circuit in Las Vegas, United States on November 17, 2023. Proponents of the "Netflix effect" often point to a poll taken in 2022 which found 28% of American adults considered themselves to be F1 fans, with more than half crediting "Drive to Survive." If this were true it would mean there were an incredible 72 million F1 fans in the U.S. alone. This argument runs out of road slightly however, when you consider that only 2 million Americans tuned in to watch the 2023 Miami Grand Prix. Today, F1 fans are estimated to be around 40% female, up from just 8% in 2017, as well as significantly more culturally diverse.

There are a few key forces forces driving the latest bitcoin euphoria, including an influx of money from investors in newly launched bitcoin exchange-traded funds and excitement over the halving, when the rate of bitcoin production is slashed. “Which is exciting because if history rhymes, the next 12-18 months is going to be a scorcher for crypto.”The halving hypeThe halving, also called the “halvening,” is a foundational concept in the bitcoin philosophy. In 2016, it was about almost 800% over that two-year period; for the 2020 halving, investors saw a 700% gain. The imminent bitcoin halving is setting up a grand chess game in the markets, Henry Robinson, co-founder of Decimal Digital Currency, said in an email. The timing of this year’s halving is also significant, coming just a few months after the US Securities and Exchange Commission approved the first spot bitcoin ETFs.

Economic models buckle under strain of climate reality
  + stars: | 2023-11-22 | by ( Mark John | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +6 min
But detractors say those numbers are the product of economic models that are not fit to capture the full extent of climate damage. A year earlier, the Trump administration cited similar models to justify replacing the Obama-era Clean Power Plan with one allowing higher emissions from coal-burning plants. At issue are the "integrated assessment models" (IAMs) economists use to draw conclusions on anything from output losses to financial risk or the pricing of carbon markets. Line chart with data from Climate Tracker shows varying predictions of global warming damage as percentage of GDP. "Our main message is: 'Economists, speak to climate scientists and come up with results that make sense'," he said.

Bridgewater rigged its "believability weighting" system to keep founder Ray Dalio on top, a new book says. That's according to "The Fund: Ray Dalio, Bridgewater Associates, and the Unraveling of a Wall Street Legend," out Tuesday from New York Times finance reporter Rob Copeland. Bridgewater's believability weighting system, in theory, was supposed to help determine how much weight a person's opinion carried and to help identify hidden talent within the firm. Bridgewater started experimenting with Dalio's believability weighting system with a prototype allowing staff to see each others' scores on a scale of 1-to-10, but Dalio wasn't pleased, the book said. In response to a request for comment from Insider on the book's assertions regarding the believability rating system, Bridgewater provided excerpts of letters that its lawyers sent to the book's publisher, St. Martin's Press.

They're pouring more money into Hollywood-style entertainment but want streamers to share more data. An industry effort is underway to standardize measurement of brand films. Brands are joining the chorus of content producers and creators demanding more audience data from Hollywood entertainment giants. Without transparency from the streamers, brands and their agencies rely on other measurements, some quantitative, some qualitative — typically a mix of things like critical reviews, social chatter, earned media, and sentiment. Most streamers don't show viewership data, so "you never really know how many people saw it," said Marc Gilbar, who leads Imagine's brands division.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has been promoting the company's long-delayed, sci-fi inspired Cybertruck on social media this week. The company also said in a shareholder deck that it was "working on equipment installation for Cybertruck production, which remains on track for initial deliveries this year." On Wednesday, Musk shared a post on X, formerly Twitter, with an image of the Cybertruck, saying, "Just drove the production candidate Cybertruck at Tesla Giga Texas!" Musk also sent an email to "everybody" at Tesla on Wednesday about the Cybertruck and the challenges of producing the vehicle. What Musk said in the email implies that Tesla is still struggling with Cybertruck quality.

The Tiny Craft Mapping Superstorms at Sea Shortly after dawn on Sept. 30, 2021, Richard Jenkins watched a Category 4 hurricane overrun his life’s work. That August, a sister ship, SD 1031, successfully entered Tropical Storm Henri, but only in its early stages. Hurricane research, modeling and forecasting requires many terabytes of data for every square mile the storm passes through, including vitally important sea-level data from inside a storm. The next day, the depression was upgraded to a tropical storm and officially given the name Sam. And four months later, Tropical Storm Megi killed more than 150, wiped out several villages with landslides and displaced more than a million people.
JPMorgan's Dimon says U.S. interest rates could hit 6% -CNBC
  + stars: | 2023-02-24 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: 1 min
Feb 23 (Reuters) - JPMorgan Chase & Co (JPM.N) Chief Executive Jamie Dimon expects U.S. interest rates could hit 6%, he said in an interview with CNBC on Thursday. The Federal Reserve quickly caught up to out-of-control inflation and would probably pause interest rates at a little over 5%, but they may need to go higher, Dimon told CNBC. “I suspect (interest rates) may have to go a little bit higher than 5 we're talking about. It could hit 6,” he added. The Fed's policy rate is now in a range between 4.50% and 4.75%.
The jobless rate held steady at 5%, which is just a decimal point higher than the record low, Statistics Canada (Statscan) said. Analysts surveyed by Reuters had forecast a net gain of 15,000 jobs and for the unemployment rate to edge up to 5.1% in January. "However, that won't stop markets reacting to today's strong data by pricing in a greater probability of further hikes, and pricing out rate cuts," he said. Before the jobs numbers, markets had been betting that the Bank of Canada's next move would be to cut rates. When he announced a pause on rates, Governor Tiff Macklem said it was "conditional" and did not rule out further increases.
"The economy grew a little in November with increases in telecommunications and computer programming helping to push the economy forward. Pubs and bars also did well as people went out to watch World Cup games," ONS statistician Darren Morgan said. The ONS said December's GDP would need to drop by about 0.5% for fourth-quarter growth to be negative when rounded to one decimal place, assuming no other revisions. Finance minister Jeremy Hunt said after the GDP data that "the most important help we can give is to stick to the plan to halve inflation this year so we get the economy growing again". October retail sales gained the most in five months, though it was a notch lower than the 1.5% rise forecast by analysts. September's decline was revised downward a decimal point to 0.6% from a previously reported drop of 0.5%, Statistics Canada said. October sales were driven mostly by price increases at gasoline stations and in food and beverage, Statistics Canada said. In volume terms, retail sales were flat. "Retail sales posted a solid increase in October, though the gain came from higher prices, particularly at gasoline stations," Shelly Kaushik, an economist at BMO Capital Markets, said in a note.
ECB's Schnabel pushes back on smaller rate hikes
  + stars: | 2022-11-24 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
However Schnabel, the most influential voice in the hawkish camp, said this was premature and could even prove counter-productive. "Incoming data so far suggest that the room for slowing down the pace of interest rate adjustments remains limited, even as we are approaching estimates of the 'neutral' rate," she told an event in London. "The extraordinarily large degree of uncertainty surrounding such estimates implies that they cannot serve as a yardstick to inform the appropriate pace of interest rate adjustments. Dutch governor Knot expressed doubts over market expectations for the ECB's deposit rate, currently at 1.5%, to peak at 3%. In all honesty, I'm not sure about that," Knot told a hearing at the Dutch parliament.
And one British scientist led the push Friday to incorporate bold new, tongue-twisting prefixes on the gigantic and even the minuscule scale. There’s the gargantuan “ronna” (that’s 27 zeros after the one) and its big brother the “quetta” — (that’s 30 zeros). Their ant-sized counterparts are the “ronto” (27 zeros after the decimal point), and the “quecto” (with 30 zeros after the decimal point) -- representing the smaller numbers needed for quantum science and particle physics. The conference, which takes place every four years in France, is the supreme authority of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures. (We) need new words as things expand,” Brown said.
“I think it’s going to be significant,” Chuck Coughlin, an Arizona Republican pollster, said of the third-party impact on key Senate races. Angela McArdle, the chair of the Libertarian National Committee, said it’s not her party's job to protect Republican candidates who are alienating voters. "If Republicans fear that Libertarians are going to be spoilers, Republicans need to run more liberty-minded candidates," McArdle told NBC News. Much attention has been paid to the level of support third-party candidates can wrestle from the major party contenders in recent election cycles, particularly on the presidential level. "We have to wait to see the melt on these third-party candidates," he said.
Operating income Once we remove operating expenses from gross margin dollars , we are left with what is known as operating income. This is especially important from a cash flow perspective as many companies define free cash flow (a non-GAAP metric) as "operating cash flow less expenditures on property, plant and equipment." Part 3: Cash flow analysis The cash flow statement is the middle child in a financial report — it gets overlooked. Investors may look to use operating cash flow or free cash flow for this equation. AMC's cash flow Let's finish by taking a look at the cash flow statement.
Part 1: Income statement In the financial statements that companies report to the Securities and Exchange Commission and shareholders on a quarterly and annual basis, there are three main sections: the income statement, the balance statement and the cash flow statement. The income statement gives us our best view of management's performance. Operating income Once we remove operating expenses from gross margin dollars , we are left with what is known as operating income. Some companies will report a line item before reporting operating income referred to as "EBITDA," which stands for earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization . Remove this from operating income or "EBIT" and we are left with "EBT" (earnings before taxes), which Apple refers to intuitively as "income before provision for income taxes."
The pound after the Bank of England said it's closely monitoring financial markets. The pound fell by nearly 2% after the statement but didn't return to record lows. "The Bank is monitoring developments in financial markets very closely in light of the significant repricing of financial assets," BoE Governor Andrew Bailey said in a statement Monday. Financial markets were looking for the Bank of England to say it would raise interest rates or enact emergency measures to aid the pound. Financial markets on Monday were pricing in expectations for UK interest rates to rise to soar to 6% next year on the back of sterling's fall.
And in a way, Duncan thought the science wasn't a good match for the blunt process of oil and gas drilling. The Covid downturn in 2020 capped close to a decade of a bear market for oil and culminated in the negative spot prices in the oil market in May 2020. Oil and gas was changing from a growth business to a value business, and oil company management were much more focused on fiscal discipline. That concentration of equipment and infrastructure's resulting reduced costs was not good for an oil services company. And there have been a lot of surprises along the way – how the shale boom became its biggest business, followed by how quickly the science became commoditized in the oil market.
