(Reuters) - Wisconsin’s governor on Friday extended a statewide mask mandate despite a legal challenge from conservatives, renewing an emergency health order requiring face coverings in public spaces to curb an alarming surge in COVID-19 infections. Many Republican politicians, led by President Donald Trump, have belittled or criticized face coverings as an infringement of personal freedom. Public health experts say greater social mixing and indoor gatherings as the weather turns colder ahead of the holiday season is fueling a worsening contagion, putting already strained healthcare systems further under siege. His new health order requires everyone to wear masks in enclosed spaces except at home when no one from outside the household is present. Earlier in the day, Dr. Deborah Birx, a member of the White House coronavirus task force, appealed to Americans to avoid unnecessary travel and limit social gatherings during next week’s Thanksgiving holiday.

The face-covering mandate marked the latest in a flurry of new restrictions by state and local officials nationwide to tamp down COVID-19 cases soaring with the onset of winter. “Wisconsin hospitals are overwhelmed and facing staffing shortages,” Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers, a Democrat, said in a press release. The growing split between Atlas and task force leaders came after the group’s leading medical experts — Dr. Deborah Birx and Dr. Anthony Fauci — indicated that they did not appreciate Atlas’ controversial input or contributions in the Situation Room gatherings. Dr. Atlas has expressed views that are inconsistent with the university’s approach in response to the pandemic,” the university said in a statement Monday. I mean, I don't want to say anything against Dr. Atlas as a person but I totally disagree with the stand he takes. For the first time in months, the vice president is leading two task force meetings in the span of one week. “There is now aggressive, unrelenting, expanding broad community spread across the country, reaching most counties, without evidence of improvement but rather, further deterioration,” the task force wrote.

The coronavirus is spreading all over the US as temperatures fall and more people gather indoors. On Thursday, both the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the White House urged people to stay home this Thanksgiving and keep celebrations single-household affairs. At the White House press conference, Dr. Deborah Birx spoke in front of an alarming map that showed COVID-19 outbreaks everywhere. Hours later, the White House coronavirus task force also held a briefing to urge extra caution, stressing that no one should be gathering indoors with people from other households now or next week. "We're asking every American to remain valiant," Dr. Deborah Birx, the coronavirus-response coordinator, said on Thursday afternoon at the White House, suggesting Thanksgiving-as-usual should be canceled.

(CNN) The United States is seeing the fastest spread yet of the coronavirus, the White House Coronavirus Task Force said in its first public briefing in four months on Thursday. Birx also said "decreasing those friend and family gatherings where people come together and unknowingly spread the virus," will help slow the spread. "President Trump wanted me to make it clear that our task force, this administration and our President, does not support another national lockdown. The big hope, the task force members agreed, is a vaccine. If they are approved, the task force members said the vaccines will be rolled out quickly.
