In October 2023, the Fifth Circuit Court rebuked Judge David Jones but said that his longtime colleague, Judge Marvin Isgur, had been "unaware" of Jones' inappropriate relationship. CNN —The United States is sending $275 million in military assistance to Ukraine as part of “efforts to help Ukraine repel Russia’s assault near Kharkiv,” Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced Friday. “We will move this new assistance as quickly as possible so the Ukrainian military can use it to defend their territory and protect the Ukrainian people,” Blinken said in a statement. Russian forces have advanced toward Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, after launching a surprise cross-border assault in mid-May. “We’re committed to making sure that Ukraine has the equipment it needs to succeed on the battlefield.”However, the US has continued to say its weapons cannot be used by Ukraine to strike Russian targets on Russian territory. “We have not encouraged or enabled strikes outside of Ukraine,” Blinken reiterated last week.

CNN —Families of seven female Israeli soldiers captured by Hamas during the October 7 attacks have released graphic footage of their abduction as they pile pressure on the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to secure their release. The video shows the women — all Israel Defense Forces (IDF) personnel — lined up against a wall, their hands bound. The footage was previously released by Hamas, according to the Hostages Families Forum. The campaigning group obtained it from the IDF, which had previously edited the video to exclude the most disturbing scenes. Re “Dear Boomers, the Student Protesters Are Not Idiots,” by Elizabeth Spiers (Opinion guest essay, nytimes.com, May 17):Ms. Spiers’s characterization of the student protests misses the mark. As a recent college graduate myself, I don’t disagree that college students “are capable of having well thought-out principles,” but the principles underlying these protests are troubling. Ms. Spiers alludes to my generation possessing elevated moral sensibilities due to our experience with mass shootings. If these chants are part of well thought-out principles and not naïveté, then it behooves us to scrutinize the moral framework that informs these principles. Why is it that these protests project outrage toward Israel’s conduct in the war but conveniently elide the horrific details of Oct. 7?
