Ron DeSantis was touted as a rising star with a clear path leading to the Republican nomination in 2024 and possibly into the White House itself. DeSantis also championed the policies that Trump voters claimed to want more of, like a hard line on abortion, expanded gun access and removing progressive prosecutors. The thing that DeSantis didn’t have over the billionaire reality TV star-turned-president – Trump’s personality – turned out to be a fatal flaw. Marco Rubio and Rick Scott – were unwilling to lend their support to DeSantis’ flailing campaign, endorsing Trump instead. Or one could look at DeSantis’ charmless offensive and conclude that his presidential ambitions will never be more than that – ambitions.

☆ The Lost DeSantis Moment

There are countless reasons Mr. DeSantis fell apart and ultimately ended his campaign Sunday — including that his opponent proved once again to be a juggernaut. Perhaps Mr. DeSantis might have won the nomination in most other years, if he hadn’t been going against a former president. But rather than dwell on his losing campaign, it’s worth returning to his apparent strength at the outset — that brief moment when Mr. DeSantis, or at least the idea of Mr. DeSantis, routinely led Mr. Trump in high-quality head-to-head polls. In the eight years since Donald J. Trump won the Republican nomination, this was the only moment when Republican voters appeared willing to go a different direction. Mr. DeSantis didn’t capitalize on the moment, but nonetheless it’s the only glimpse we’ve had into the post-Trump Republican Party.

Jonathan Chait has a long lament in New York magazine about the diminishing intensity of anti-Trump politics in America. Even as the former president shoulders his way toward the Republican nomination and leads President Biden in many polls, Chait frets that “the imperative to keep Trump out of the Oval Office has become tiresome.” Indeed, a kind of “exhaustion” with anti-Trumpism, Chait writes, “may be the most dominant attribute of our national mood.”His essay goes on to interpret this exhaustion as more psychological and even spiritual than simply political. The way that so many anti-Trump Republican donors and politicians seemed to essentially give up on the hope of a competitive primary once Trump was indicted and Ron DeSantis didn’t set the world on fire fits this framework. So does the way that the Democratic Party has seemingly sleepwalked into renominating Biden despite his lousy polling numbers and obvious age-related issues. But I also think more than just exhaustion is at work here, and that some of the different groups Chait identifies as insufficiently anti-Trump — left-wingers, establishment Republicans, pocketbook-conscious swing voters — are actually experiencing something that might be more accurately characterized as a kind of Trump nostalgia.

When I spoke to the Haley campaign early Monday morning, before the Iowa caucuses had begun, they said they were shifting toward Trump, seemingly writing DeSantis off as their closest threat. New York CNN —Republican presidential candidates Nikki Haley and Ron DeSantis sparred on a wide range of economic issues during the CNN GOP presidential debate on Wednesday evening. But as Haley and DeSantis duked it out to crown themselves the most fiscally prudent candidate, some clear economic themes began to emerge that will likely have a big influence on the upcoming Republican primaries and beyond: China, debt levels and the government’s role in business. ChinaBoth Haley and DeSantis sought to prove how tough they could be on China. But as my colleague Elisabeth Buchwald points out, the US and China are the first- and second-largest economies in the world. President Joe Biden has also made reducing economic dependence on China a platform in both his 2020 and 2024 campaigns.

The next 30 minutes of DeSantis’ speech then demonstrated how Biden might survive despite all the doubts about his performance and capabilities. CNN —Disney is scrapping plans to build a new campus that would have brought thousands of employees to Florida, citing “changing business conditions,” according to a memo provided by a Disney spokesperson. It’s also tense time for Disney as the media industry grapples with a difficult advertising environment and a massive writers strike. The campus in Lake Nona, Florida, in the greater Orlando area, was expected to add 2,000 jobs. Before the Florida government selected the board in February, Disney had reached agreements with the outgoing board that limited the power of DeSantis’ appointees. Last month, Disney CEO Bob Iger told investors that he believed DeSantis’ actions to punish Disney were “anti-business.”Disney’s stock rose slightly after its announcement.
