Not so for one Washington state woman, who called 911 after her home was swarmed by scores of hungry raccoons. This was a first.”No wild raccoons in Washington have recently been diagnosed with rabies — a disease that kills almost every human it infects, according to the Washington State Department of Health. “At this point, it’s been determined that the raccoons haven’t committed any crimes,” McCarty told the affiliate, before adding a more serious moral coda. “Don’t feed wild animals. When wild animals have a reliable food source, they’re going to keep coming back to it.

London CNN —Against the backdrop of a challenging economic outlook for many brands — big and small — the 40th anniversary of London Fashion Week last week was certainly a time for reflection. Le Cinq, in Paris' Four Seasons Hotel George V, serves dishes by award-winning chef Christian Le Squer and wine from a cellar that can hold 50,000 bottles. NYC restaurateur Keith McNally insulted Lauren Sánchez in an apparently unprompted Instagram post. And his latest target is Lauren Sánchez, the fiancée of one of the most powerful people in the world, Jeff Bezos. McNally, who owns more than a dozen restaurants including NYC's famed Balthazar, wrote a seemingly out-of-the-blue Instagram post attacking Sánchez and Bezos on Monday. Chrissy Teigen commented on McNally's post, writing, "She's actually incredibly dynamic, accomplished and kind, and everyone who knows her would say the same." If his edited-down post is any indication, McNally sure learned the hard way not to mess with Sánchez, or her famous friends.

The documents showed that the government also labeled as part of its climate change efforts items as disparate as Navy security operations and distributing fortified milk among the rural poor. Of this, Pemex spent 5.6 billion pesos on climate change and 1.3 billion pesos on the energy transition in the same period, the public accounts show. "Mexico started really strong," said Maria Jose de Villafranca, the lead researcher for Mexico at Climate Action Tracker. Last month, the French Senate voted 221 to 82 in favor of the proposal banning gender-inclusive language from official French documents. Now it seems, another legitimate arm of state power — the French Senate — has taken matters into its own hands. As Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of the left-wing populist France Insoumise (France Unbowed) party said on X: “The French language belongs to those who speak it.”But the right embraces it. PUNE, India, Nov 9 (Reuters) - Australia coach Andrew McDonald believes Glenn Maxwell's breath-taking shotmaking, best illustrated by his incendiary double hundred in Monday's World Cup match against Afghanistan, will inspire a new generation of cricketers. Hobbled by cramp during the latter stages of his innings, Maxwell smacked 10 sixes and 21 fours in his batting pyrotechnics and McDonald said it would take time to fully appreciate the magnitude of the feat. McDonald said the all-rounder was impacting batsmanship like compatriot Ricky Ponting or South African stalwart AB de Villiers did in the past. "Players take the game forward every day, and the game is better today than it was yesterday," the coach said. "Glenn Maxwell will no doubt inspire a new generation with some outrageous shots..."That's the beauty about the game, and he stretched the boundary as did AB de Villiers and Ricky Ponting in their time as well.

I started shopping at Astier de Villatte, the Parisian company that manufactures milky ceramics by borrowing 18th-century techniques, after a couple I know who collects the stuff got engaged. All are made in black terra cotta with a white enamel glaze; this season, the same bases are being incorporated into a new line of lamps (in case you want to buy something for yourself, too). But whatever you choose, don’t forget to include some candles. Inside Passalacqua, the 'world's best hotel'

CNN —The “best hotel in the world” was built by a pope and was regularly visited by one of Italy’s most famous opera composers. On 19 September in London at the inaugural World’s 50 Best Hotels, the hotel on Lake Como was named number one. Passalacqua didn’t invent the term villeggiatura, but her every detail embodies it – a romantic 18th century villa turned faultless luxury hotel where you come to exhale and leave your worries behind. Rooms without a lake view start at 1,300 euros ($1,381) per night or 1,700 euros ($1,806) for a view in November – lowest season. Next summer, rates rise to 2,300 euros ($2,443) for a standard room without a lake view, or 3,200 ($3,400) for the cheapest room with a view.

The New Look in Cocktails? Layers and Stripes.
  + stars: | 2023-08-10 | by ( Robert Simonson | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Fajita favorites of recent years have included the espresso martini, all manner of blue cocktails and any drink on fire. The latest, though, has something else in common with fajitas besides contagious appeal: layers of colorful ingredients. In a layered cocktail, the various liquid components settle out in separate strata, giving the drink a striped or ombré look. There are two ways to layer a cocktail: floats and sinkers. A sinker is also poured in last but, owing to the ingredient’s weight, falls to the bottom of the glass.

Mr. Heuermann went on to college at New York Institute of Technology on Long Island to study architectural technology. One of the few neighbors Mr. Heuermann spoke to was Etienne de Villiers, 68, whose immaculately kept house next door stood in keen contrast with Mr. Heuermann’s. Mr. de Villiers said he had only passing conversations with Mr. Heuermann along with a few minor conflicts, like the time he had to tell Mr. Heuermann to stop leering at his wife over the backyard fence while she was sunbathing. Mr. de Villiers watched as Mr. Heuermann seemed to be raising his children to be as isolated as he had been, in the same rundown off-limits house. “He just didn’t want any part of it, he didn’t want any part of sports,” Mr. DeMicoli said.
