Rihanna’s fluffy Jacquemus bathrobe
  + stars: | 2024-09-19 | by ( Leah Dolan | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +2 min
At the UK launch of her latest beauty endeavor, Fenty Hair, the global megastar posed for photos outside Selfridges, London’s historic department store, not in satin, silk or sequins — but a fluffy bathrobe worn off-the-shoulder. The cream-colored fuzzy gown was designed by Jacquemus and styled by Jaheel Weaver with gold point-toe pumps and long crystal earrings. The bathrobe went from cosy staple to red carpet appropriate. Ora even kept the gag going when she changed into a shorter bathrobe for her live performance. Andreas Rentz/Getty ImagesMore recently, Isabelle Huppert has been making the case for bathrobe-style textiles to receive the red carpet treatment.

CNN —Madonna was everywhere at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards in New York — and she wasn’t even there. But it was Artist of the Year nominee Sabrina Carpenter who went the extra mile by tracking down a vintage gown from the Queen of Pop’s style archive. Featuring a deep-V neckline and embellished with sequins, pearls and crystals, the white satin gown was designed — and later customized for Madonna — by celebrated fashion designer Bob Mackie. “Maria Schiavo, a well-known fashion stylist, borrowed my sample of this dress for a Madonna cover shoot for Vanity Fair,” Mackie recalled. Nobody else should be seen in that dress.”)Carpenter’s stylist, Jared Ellner, said on Instagram that he acquired the Madonna gown through LA vintage clothing studio, Tab Vintage.

In China, the industry's second-largest market, lab-grown varieties, a sluggish luxury market, and low marriage rates are causing it to lose its sparkle. Related storiesCook said one issue is a shift in perception of lab-grown diamonds in the country. The Knot's Real Weddings Study found that nearly half of engagement rings bought in the US last year featured a lab-grown diamond as a center stone. A social media analysis by Daxue Consulting found that lab-grown diamonds are also gaining traction in China, particularly among cash-strapped younger people. Even so, De Beers recently announced that it would halt its six-year experiment with selling lab-grown diamond jewelry.

Diamond prices have fallen 5.7% so far this year, according to Zimnisky's rough diamond index, declining more than 30% from their all-time high in 2022. Lab-grown diamonds, which can be up to 85% cheaper than natural diamonds, are made in a controlled environment using extreme pressure and heat. Lab-grown diamond sales have surged from just 2% of the global diamond jewelry market in 2017 to 18.4% in 2023, according to data provided by Zimnisky. An industry 'in trouble'"The diamond industry is in trouble," Daga told CNBC, adding that he believes natural diamond prices could fall another 15%-20% over the next 12 months. Similar to a natural diamond, a lab-grown diamond is graded based on the 4Cs — clarity, color, cut and carat weight.

(Photo by William WEST / AFP) (Photo by WILLIAM WEST/AFP via Getty Images)LONDON — Anglo American rejected a third takeover proposal from rival BHP Group on Wednesday, as the companies agreed to extend talks deadline by one week. The British miner confirmed the third proposal from BHP offered about £29.34 per Anglo American share, based on undisturbed share prices as of market close on April 23. Shares of Anglo American were up 0.35% shortly after the announcement, while BHP shares fell over 3.4%. The combined companies would form a behemoth in copper mining and the world's largest player in the space, supplying 10% of global output, according to a Reuters analysis. Anglo rejected both previous offers, however, saying that they "significantly undervalue the company and its future prospects."

The US is considering reducing efforts to enforce a ban on Russian diamonds, Reuters reported. AdvertisementThe US is rethinking restrictions on Russian diamonds after a wave of pushback from the industry and nations heavily involved in the diamond trade, Reuters reported on Monday. That's a step up from the initial sanctions, which previously allowed the trade of Russian diamonds that were polished in other countries. The government has received pushback from firms and nations heavily involved in the diamond trade. De Beers, one of the world's largest diamond miners, said it supported a ban on Russian diamonds but wants diamonds to be verified at the source of production, rather than in Belgium.

This move will be followed by further restrictions on the import of Russian diamonds processed in third countries starting in March. Greg Kwiat, chief executive of Kwiat Diamonds, a diamond jewelry brand in New York City, said the company’s Mine to Shine traceability program, introduced in June, was likewise based on a desire to show how diamonds positively affect the communities in Africa where they are mined. Consumers who buy Kwiat diamonds are able to follow their stones from the mine through the stages of cutting and setting into jewelry. “Right now, we’re sharing videos and imagery of the process as it’s occurring,” Mr. Kwiat said. WASHINGTON (AP) — A new batch of Rhodes scholars from the United States has been selected to study at the University of Oxford in a screening process that was conducted in person for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic swept across the globe in 2020. The scholars, who are among students selected from more than 70 countries, are due to pursue graduate degrees ranging from social sciences and humanities to biological and physical sciences. The U.S. scholars were selected by 16 independent district committees from a pool of more than 2,500 applicants. The sponsorships were created in 1902 by the will of Cecil Rhodes, a founder of the diamond mining and manufacturing company De Beers. The inaugural class entered Oxford in 1903 and the first U.S. Rhodes scholars arrived the next year, according to the website of the trust’s American secretary.

Other diamond firms in Antwerp, the world's biggest centre of trade in rough diamonds and cutting of the biggest gems, were asked to avoid Russian stones. Now, Western powers want to make the boycott official with a formal ban on Russian stones. Imports of Russian rough diamonds are now at less than 5% of pre-war levels, the source said. Most proposals under consideration by the G7 now focus on rough diamonds of 1 carat and above initially.

Options for G7 discussion for a ban on Russian diamonds
  + stars: | 2023-10-18 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +5 min
Enforcement would be government regulated through customs at a single point of entry for rough diamonds and several G7 entry points for polished stones. The proposal said a single entry point would be needed for rough diamonds without specifying where. Antwerp would be the favoured option for Belgium and the city also already handles most of the rough diamond trade. WORLD DIAMOND COUNCILThe World Diamond Council, which includes the world's largest rough diamond producer by value, De Beers, has proposed a version of the ban that is largely self-regulating. Any diamond sellers would then have to include with the stone they sell a declaration called the "G7 Diamond Protocol Declaration" that the diamond is not Russian.

According to the Zimnisky Global Rough Diamond Index, prices are the lowest they’ve been in a year. Shopper demand for diamond jewelry influences rough diamond prices and, to an extent, retail prices. The plummeting prices follow two record-breaking years in rough diamond sales. But a drop in rough diamond prices does not mean shoppers will see cheaper price tags in stores. “The stock market is performing relatively well and employment is strong,” he said, paving the way for a gradual recovery of rough diamond prices in 2024.

Russia diamond giant Alrosa is halting sales in a bid to boost diamond prices, according to Bloomberg. Diamond prices have struggled over the past year amid growing demand for lab-grown stones. The mining giant will pause sales of rough diamonds until November, Bloomberg reported on Wednesday, citing a company memo sent out to customers. That comes amid a freefall in diamond prices, which has only accelerated over the past few weeks. Russian diamonds are also facing a potential ban from the G7 nations, which could impact the price of diamonds of Russian origin.
