In recent years, much of my life as a consumer has shifted to what I like to call background spending. As I’ve subscribed to more apps and streaming platforms, significant sums of my money tend to drift away each month without my ever thinking about it. Spending without the hassle of spending. But while this swell of subscriptions was sold to me on the premise it would make my life more hassle-free, there was a certain sticker shock I felt upon actually discovering how much I’m spending without realizing each month ($179.45) — after I’ve already spent it, of course. When I reopened the app for the first time in eons, I was confronted with dozens of shows I’ve never heard of but to whose production budgets I’ve been contributing generously.

It’s Your Birthday. Bring on the Nudes.

When David Dulin celebrated his 36th birthday in March, he asked his Twitter followers for just two things: cash donations to his online payment account, and pictures of them in their own birthday suits. He was surprised, he said, when some of his online acquaintances delivered on the invitation, admitting that they had been looking for an opportunity to flirt with him. In recent years, many queer men have begun sending and receiving nude selfies on social media for their birthdays. Variations on “It’s my birthday, send nudes” have been uttered so frequently online that it has become something of a meme (or, at the very least, a generic way for a gay man to announce his birthday, whether or not he actually expects to receive any explicit images). The practice has become so normalized that the request is sometimes simplified to, “It’s my birthday — you know what to do.”

Opinion | Should You Check Your Bag, or Bring a Carry-On?

To the Editor:Re “Don’t Even Think About Checking a Bag,” by David Mack (Opinion guest essay, July 9):I’ve been flying for over 50 years. Only once did I have a bag delayed — not lost — and I received it at my destination the next day. I don’t crowd the aisles in boarding and deplaning trying to wrestle with almost full-size bags in the overhead bins, causing unnecessary waiting for my fellow passengers. I don’t bring onboard bags that barely (sometimes not at all) fit in the overheads and crowd and crush other overhead items. I don’t bring bags that weigh more than a normal human can lift (or bring down) and require the help of another passenger.

I’m terrible at packing. His philosophy when it comes to luggage is progressive: Leave no shirts behind, lest they feel excluded from our vacation. With our traveling circus of luggage, we are hangers-on to an old way of life. Long gone are the days when you wouldn’t think twice about checking a bag and waltzing onto a plane empty-handed, knowing it was someone else’s problem. One 2013 survey found just 19 percent of passengers traveled exclusively carry-on; by last year, a separate survey had found that this carry-on-only group had climbed to 41 percent of travelers.

A finance lawyer who used to wear suits, he lately had found himself toiling in a series of baggy sweatpants and sweaters. (No judgment: I wore the same crusty, forest-green hoodie and gray sweats for over three days straight.) Dictionary.com even credited us with popularizing the term, although it’s been around in some form since at least 2009. Three years on, while I have mostly stopped wearing masks, my soft clothes remain. On an ideal day, you shouldn’t be able to tell if I’m going to the club or to my couch.
