Vials move along a conveyor at the Novo Nordisk A/S production facilities in Hillerod, Denmark, on Monday, June 12, 2023. Shares of Denmark's Zealand Pharma rocketed higher, after the company posted strong results from a trial of a liver disease treatment that has been touted as a potential competitor in the booming weight-loss drug market. The drug has "demonstrated efficacy" in people with obesity and is currently undergoing five Phase-3 trials in a clinical program for people who are overweight or obese. Analysts latched onto the drug's possible efficacity in obesity research following the latest test results, which indicated the safety of the top dosage used in that trial. Several other firms, including Eli Lilly, Roche and AstraZeneca, also seek to compete in the sector.

"Based on currently available clinical data and scientific evidence, Fresenius Medical Care assesses the overall effect of GLP-1 analog use on its own patient flow model as neutral," it said in a statement to Reuters. Novo said on Wednesday that the Ozempic trial was stopped ahead of schedule because independent supervisors had ruled the drug's positive effect on chronic kidney disease had become clear enough. In its statement, Fresenius Medical said that the early termination of the study, known as FLOW, does not allow for clear conclusions. Earlier on Thursday, rival DaVita (DVA.N) said that Novo's FLOW trial would only have a limited impact on overall dialysis patient numbers.

LVMH, which owns labels including Louis Vuitton, Dior, Tiffany and Bulgari, said that revenue came to 19.96 billion euros ($21.16 billion), up 9% year-on-year, stripping out the effect of currency fluctuations and acquisitions. LVMH is facing slowing demand for high end goods in the United States and Europe, where rising prices have prompted shoppers — especially younger generations — to pull back from a post-pandemic spending euphoria, while the recovery in China has been uneven.

Danish drugmaker Novo Nordisk has entered a new chapter in its 100-year history — thanks to its newfound success with two products: Ozempic and Wegovy. Their skyrocketing popularity has boosted Novo Nordisk to new heights. Novo Nordisk's share price has more than quadrupled in the past five years, making it Europe's most valuable company by market cap. "It's clear that nobody had expected that it would be taking off this quickly," said Novo Nordisk CEO Lars Fruergaard Jørgensen in August. In 2018, the first full year with Ozempic on the market, Novo Nordisk's net sales were 111.8 billion Danish krone, or $17.7 billion, using an average exchange rate at the time.

Independent monitors can recommend stopping a trial early if there is clear evidence that a drug was going to succeed or fail based on interim analyses. "The recent decline in European luxury stocks reflects the uncertainty over the European economy and also the uneven growth outlook for the Chinese economy," Garnry said. Reuters GraphicsTHE LUXURY GAPAlthough luxury valuations have come down, they are still well above the rest of the market. The end of the French luxury group's 2-1/2 year-long reign was widely put down to investors losing appetite for luxury stocks as well as the growth of Novo's anti-obesity drug Wegovy. Some analysts have turned cautious on the luxury sector, with UBS last week reducing its estimates to account for the risk of slowing Chinese consumption. Gerry Fowler, head of European equity strategy and global derivative strategy at UBS, said risks in luxury stocks started to become more apparent in May.

Danish drugmaker Novo Nordisk 's promising data on its obesity drug Wegovy should benefit Eli Lilly 's pipeline and its stock, according to Morgan Stanley. Shares of Novo Nordisk soared 15% in early trading Tuesday after late-stage trial data showed that Wegovy reduced the risk of major cardiovascular events, such as heart attacks or strokes, by 20%, compared with a placebo. "This is above our expectations and our prior analysis," Morgan Stanley analyst Terence Flynn said. Flynn has an overweight rating on Eli Lilly and a $560 12-month price target, which would translate into a 23% gain from Monday's close of $454.08. FDA warns about safety risks of tailored weight-loss drugs

REUTERS/Lucas Jackson/File PhotoJune 1 (Reuters) - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned about the safety risks of using compounded or custom-made versions of popular weight-loss drugs such as Wegovy and diabetes drug Ozempic. The FDA warned patients to refrain from using a compounded drug if an approved drug is available. Compounded drugs are created by combining, mixing, or altering ingredients to create a medication tailored to the needs of an individual patient. The agency said it does not review compounded versions of these drugs for safety, effectiveness, or quality, adding, it had received reports that compounders might be using salt forms of semaglutide, which are different active ingredients than those used in the approved drugs. The U.S. is expected to account for as much as 90% of weight-loss drug sales due to the number of potential patients and higher pricing than other countries, industry analysts and executives say.

Danish pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk last month sent a comment letter to the Treasury Department objecting to two rules set out in December guidance on the 1% tax on stock buybacks. The U.S.’s new tax on stock buybacks has created a potential pain point for foreign companies: Those with stateside subsidiaries may find they are subject to the 1% levy on share repurchases. As initially written, the 1% tax on buybacks, which went into effect Jan. 1, would hit foreign companies in limited circumstances. Guidance from the government released in late December, however, changed expectations about the potential impact on foreign companies, stirring comment letters from businesses including Danish drugmaker Novo Nordisk A/S and groups representing multinational companies and global manufacturers.
EU backs use of Novo Nordisk's weight loss drug in adolescents

March 31 (Reuters) - The European Medicines Agency said on Friday its committee has recommended expanding the use of Danish drugmaker Novo Nordisk's (NOVOb.CO) weight loss drug in adolescents aged 12 years and older. Novo's Wegovy, a semaglutide-based drug, activates GLP-1, a hormone that triggers the feeling of fullness in the body after eating. It has been approved in the U.S. and European Union for treatment of obesity in adults. The company did not indicate a timeline for its plans to launch the drug, already available in Denmark and Norway, in other EU countries. Earlier this year, the American Academy of Pediatrics also recommended use of weight-loss drugs in children aged 12 years or older.

ABPI's statement linked to a website of a self-regulatory body run by the association that pointed to a complaint alleging that Novo Nordisk had sponsored courses on weight management on LinkedIn for health professionals, without making clear the company's involvement. The move amounted to "bribing health professionals with an inducement to prescribe," the complaint alleged. In response, Novo said that it had agreed to provide sponsorship to ensure that health professionals would receive training from a reputable provider, but that it had supported the activity at "arms length". Novo is the market leader in the rapidly growing area of weight loss through medicinal treatment rather than only dieting or exercising. Novo has since developed a more effective obesity treatment called Wegovy, which has been in great demand globally and is being lined up for its UK launch.

Members will get Sequence's services including telehealth visits and prescriptions for weight loss drugs like Ozempic. Through Sequence's $99-a-month subscription program, customers can schedule telehealth appointments with doctors who will prescribe weight loss and diabetes management drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy. Doctors are even adding the hashtags to videos that are about weight loss solutions that don't rely on those medications.
LONDON, March 2 (Reuters) - Europe will lose out to countries like the U.S. and Japan on new medical research, trials and treatments unless draft rules reforming the European pharmaceutical landscape change, the CEO of Danish drugmaker Novo Nordisk (NOVOb.CO) warned on Thursday. It says drugs need to reach patients more quickly and in all European nations. Novo's Lars Jorgensen lamented that without changes to the current draft, his company would be forced to research, test and bring products in its pipeline to market in the United States and elsewhere, instead of in Europe. A lose, lose, lose," he said in an interview. The Commission's current draft was leaked in Brussels last month and will likely change even before debate in the European parliament and among governments.
The pan-European STOXX 600 index (.STOXX) rose 0.3% by 0858 GMT, hovering near seven-week highs. Novo Nordisk (NOVOb.CO) jumped 5.4% as it raised its full-year earnings outlook on strong sales of diabetes treatment Ozempic and reported a better-than-expected profit. European healthcare stocks (.SXDP) led sectoral gains with a 1.2% rise, while banks (.SX7P) advanced 0.3% ahead of what is expected to be the Fed's fourth straight 75-basis-point increase to interest rates. "There are high hopes that he will signal that there could be some softening in the U.S. central bank's aggressive approach to taming inflation." Danish hearing aid maker Demant (DEMANT.CO) tumbled 13.6% to the bottom of the STOXX 600, after it cut its full-year revenue and profit guidance for the second time in the year.
