Daniel Snyder was fined $60 million, by far the largest penalty ever levied against an N.F.L. team owner, after he was found to have sexually harassed a woman who was both a former cheerleader and a marketing employee for the Washington Commanders. According to the report, her account was supported by evidence and contemporaneous witnesses. The findings were reported by Mary Jo White, a former federal prosecutor and chairwoman of the Securities and Exchange Commission, who spent 17 months looking into allegations of widespread sexual harassment against executives at the team, including Snyder, as well as claims of financial improprieties. released White’s report immediately after the 31 other clubs unanimously approved the sale of the Commanders to an investment group led by Josh Harris for $6.05 billion, a record for an American pro sports team.

CNN —The Washington Commanders will have a new ownership group as the team’s previous owner faces a $60 million fine from the league following an independent investigation finding workplace misconduct and financial improprieties. The Commanders’ new ownership group includes Basketball Hall of Famer Magic Johnson and billionaire Mitch Rales, Harris’ longtime sports business partner. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell congratulated Harris and his partners after the unanimous vote. Johnston told a congressional committee that the Commanders owner had put his hand on her leg under the table at a work dinner and tried to persuade her to get into his limousine. “The conduct substantiated in Ms. White’s findings has no place in the NFL,” a statement from NFL commissioner Roger Goodell stated.

When Daniel Snyder, at 34, became the youngest person to buy an N.F.L. franchise in 1999, he ushered in a wave of optimism and promise for the Washington franchise, a bedrock of the league. Coming off a 6-10 season, the team still raked in revenue from an ardent fan base that flocked in droves to the suburban Maryland stadium named for its late owner, Jack Kent Cooke. The formerly brash, big-spending owner had been pressured into changing the team’s name and logo, buying out his partners and, eventually, to awaken from a dream which had turned into a nightmare for many. Despite Snyder’s dream, the team never won the Super Bowl in his tenure, or even made it as far as a conference championship game.
continues its second investigation into allegations of widespread sexual harassment made against executives at the team, including Snyder, as well as potential financial improprieties. Once the Harris group submits its deal, the sale would have to be approved by the league’s finance committee and by at least three-quarters of the 31 other team owners, which could occur within weeks. Harris’s group includes Mitchell Rales, a billionaire from the Washington, D.C., area, and a group of limited partners that includes Magic Johnson. The owners will next meet in person as a group in Minneapolis on May 22 and 23. Last June, the Walton family, founders of Walmart, bought the Denver Broncos for $4.65 billion, about twice as much as the previous record high for an N.F.L.

If finalized, the sale would mark the end of the controversial ownership of the Washington franchise by embattled billionaire Daniel Snyder. News of the near deal was first reported by Sportico, which reported the team sold for $6 billion, a record for a North American sports franchise. Snyder purchased the team, then named the Washington Redskins for a reported $750 million in 1999. It adopted the Commanders name last year, after playing two seasons with the name Washington Football Team. “Today marks the end of a long, difficult chapter for all employees and fans of the Washington football organization,” read a statement from Lisa Banks and Debra Katz, two attorneys representing more than 40 former Washington Commanders employees.
New York CNN —A group led by billionaire Josh Harris and NBA legend Magic Johnson has officially placed a bid to buy the NFL’s Washington Commanders from embattled owner Daniel Snyder, a source told CNN on Tuesday. CNN confirmed last week that Johnson joined the Harris group. ESPN, which first reported news of the bid, reports that the Harris and Johnson-led group is offering to pay Snyder’s $6 billion asking price. A representative for Johnson, the Los Angeles Lakers hall of famer, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Magic Johnson and Josh Harris have bid on the Washington Commanders.

Mandatory Credit: Jay Biggerstaff-USA TODAY SportsFebruary 23 - Amazon founder Jeff Bezos hired investment firm Allen & Company as he considers bidding on the Washington Commanders, the Washington Post reported Thursday. Bezos, who also owns the Washington Post, is the third-richest person in the world with a net worth of $119 billion, according to Forbes' rankings. It is presumed that he would be able to outbid any competitors should he decide he wants to buy the Commanders. Bezos did not submit an official bid before the late December date for the first round, the reports said.
WASHINGTON — Lawyers for more than 40 former Washington Commanders employees are demanding that House Republicans remove "sexualized and salacious photographs" of the NFL team's cheerleaders featured in a GOP-written memo about the football team. (The GOP report put black boxes over the women's faces and some body parts.) In a statement, a Republican Oversight Committee aide criticized the Democrats' report and defended the GOP memo. "Prior to circulating the internal memo, Committee staff took steps to ensure all sensitive images involving cheerleaders were redacted and their identities kept confidential. As we have said from the beginning, the Oversight Committee is not the proper venue for this investigation.
Dozens of employees of the Washington Commanders were harmed for more than two decades because of a “toxic work culture” in which sexual harassment and bullying were pervasive, according to a scathing report released Thursday by the House Oversight Committee. The NFL and Washington Commanders were not immediately reached for comment Thursday afternoon. "Rather than address issues of workplace misconduct head on, the NFL has deferred responsibility to its clubs. The allegations were made by six former employees of the Washington, D.C., NFL franchise during a House Oversight Committee roundtable on toxic workplace culture. Representatives for the team, renamed the Commanders released a statement from Snyder on Thursday denying the allegations from the hearing.
The NFL and the Washington Commanders misled the public about an investigation into decades-long misconduct in the team's workplace, according to a report from the House Oversight and Reform Committee released Thursday after a yearlong probe. The panel also said the NFL and Commanders owner Daniel Snyder impeded its investigation into the matter. The NFL told her to "complete a written report of its findings" surrounding the Commanders' workplace culture. But then the league refused to release the written report, instead presenting their findings orally in order to "better preserve" witness anonymity and confidentiality. In 2014, the NFL released a 144-page written report related to an investigation into the Miami Dolphins' alleged culture of harassment and bullying.
Silver’s powerful statement fortified the NBA’s place as the “progressive” sports league and set in motion the age of athlete activism. To be fair, Washington Commanders fans will benefit if Snyder sells the team and someone less buffoonish and cruel (and incredibly shady) buys it. The NFL will also benefit if Snyder sells the team, as will the employees who alleged they have long suffered under his leadership. Heck, the world will benefit if Snyder sells the team, if just not to have to hear about him anymore. But let there be no doubt about it: If Snyder sells the team, no one on earth will benefit more than Daniel Snyder.

The team confirmed Snyder has hired Bank of America to explore 'potential transactions.' He is not being forced to sell the team, said a person familiar with the matter. Snyder has owned the team since 1999. They've made the playoffs only six times during his tenure as owner and they've never reached the NFC championship game.
CNN —Washington Commanders owner Daniel Snyder has denied allegations that he hired private investigators to look into his NFL counterparts, as well as league commissioner Roger Goodell. I have never hired any private investigator to look into any owner or the Commissioner. I have never instructed or authorized my lawyers to hire any private investigator on my behalf for any such purpose. The NFL, however, declined to publicly release its findings, sparking a House Oversight Committee review in October. The NFL hired former Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Chairwoman Mary Jo White earlier this year to investigate workplace misconduct against Snyder.
