Professional mountaineer Garrett Madison has achieved the Everest triple crown not once, but twice — first in 2023, the deadliest Everest climbing season on record, and again this year. Plus, the climbers have to carry extra protective equipment like gloves and packages for transporting the trash down the mountain. Madison's cleanup project partners with both of these organizations in a united front against trash pollution on the world's tallest peaks.

Global leaders and CEOs of major U.S. corporations will all be at the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in San Francisco, offering tempting targets to protest. For Lol Tolhurst, co-founder the influential “goth” band The Cure, it's all of the above. He explores what he calls “the last true alternative outsider subculture” in a new book titled, “Goth: A History,” published late last month by Hachette. From there, the book dives into gothic literature and the French existentialists, whom Tolhurst considers formative to the subculture. Gadhafi ruled the oil-rich country for 42 years before he was ousted and killed and Libyan officials say family members and others close to him looted government coffers of cash, gold and rare antiquities. A 2016 study by Berlin-based Transparency International estimates as much as $120 billion was taken.

Fifth Wall's Brendan Wallace says today's rough markets are a "proving ground" for the industry. Earlier this year, it announced a $500 million climate fund and a $147 European proptech fund. There are also fewer paths to go public, as the blank-check-company model that takes companies public with fewer disclosures via a merger has dried up. President Joe Biden signed the Respect for Marriage Act into law on Tuesday. It repeals the Defense of Marriage Act and requires states to recognize marriages performed in other states. The bill emerged after the Supreme Court's overturning of Roe v. Wade threw precedents into doubt. The new law, designed to protect same-sex and interracial marriage, formally repeals the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which defined marriage at the federal level as being solely between a man and a woman. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, a previously outspoken opponent of same-sex marriage, notably never spoke out against the bill.

New York’s financial regulator, which oversees insurance companies and state-chartered banks, already plays an outsize role in financial services, with many other states following its lead on regulation and enforcement. Ms. Harris seeks to bring that leadership role to other areas, including crypto and climate change. She served as a senior adviser at the Treasury Department and as head of an Obama administration financial task force. One of the benefits of being a state regulator is that you can move fast and be nimble; you can respond to changes in the marketplace.
