Румыны и молдаване причастны к одной из крупнейших сетей контрабанды в Европе: по данным Европейского бюро по борьбе с мошенничеством, за последние годы организованная преступная группировка произвела сигареты на сумму 80 миллионов евро. Несколько контрабандистов, работающих в Румынии, были задержаны Управлением по расследованию организованной преступности и терроризма Румынии (DIICOT): их обвиняют в поставках товаров на нелегальные сигаретные фабрики, созданные в нескольких европейских странах. Они начали проводить расследования и вскоре обнаружили, что имеют дело с международной сетью организованной преступности, в которую также входят граждане Румынии и Молдовы. «Члены группы открыли подпольные фабрики по производству и упаковке сигарет в нескольких государствах-членах Европейского Союза. — Европейским бюро по борьбе с мошенничеством), ущерб, причиненный деятельностью трансграничной группы, составляет 80 млн евро«, — заявила комиссар Георгиана Теодореску, офицер пограничной полиции Румынии.

În luna mai a anului trecut, polițiștii de frontieră din România au găsit mai multe materiale folosite în fabricarea țigărilor, ceea ce le-a trezit suspiciuni. Au început să facă cercetări și au descoperit la scurt timp că au de a face cu o rețea internațională de crimă organizată din care fac parte și cetățeni români și moldoveni. Materialele erau cumpărate din Ucraina şi Republica Moldova şi apoi transportate în baza unor documente false în ţările unde erau ambalate ţigările: Ungaria, Italia sau Spania. Pentru a aduna cât mai multe probe, poliţiştii şi procurorii DIICOT au făcut 40 de percheziţii în 11 judeţe. În paralel, au fost verificări şi în Ungaria şi Italia, unde poliţiştii au găsit mai multe fabrici ilegale de ţigări.
