Ted Cannis, chief executive officer of Ford Pro, speaks during an interview in New York, on Thursday, July 28, 2022. DETROIT — The head of Ford Motor 's highly profitable "Pro" commercial and fleet business will retire at the end of this month, the company said Thursday. Ford Pro has been a profit-driver for the automaker. It has raked in about $18.7 billion in adjusted earnings and $184.5 billion in revenue since 2021, assisting in offsetting losses of its electric vehicles business. Such results led Wall Street to praise the business, as analysts have called it a "hidden gem" and Ford's "Ferrari ," referring to the highly profitable Italian sports car manufacturer.

So it might surprise investors that the automaker believes its new path to profitability for electric vehicles will first be led by smaller, more affordable vehicles. “We’re quite convinced that the highest adoption rates for electric vehicles will be in the affordable segment on the lower size-end of the range,” he told CNBC on Thursday. Gjaja’s comments came a day after the automaker announced updates to its EV strategy that will cost up to $1.9 billion. Gjaja said the decision wasn’t taken lightly, especially the cancellation of the upcoming three-row vehicle, which Ford CEO Jim Farley and other executives had been touting as a game changer for several years. He said the Ford, in part, developed the skunkworks team to prove that Ford can compete against the Chinese automakers.

DETROIT — The case against a man accused of killing of a Detroit synagogue leader collapsed Friday as a judge dismissed a remaining murder charge, three weeks after a jury cleared him of a similar but separate charge. Prosecutors acknowledged that the pending murder charge probably had to be dismissed, but it still was a blow in the highly publicized case. But it couldn’t reach a unanimous verdict on a separate charge of felony murder, which in Michigan is murder committed during another crime. The judge ruled out a second trial Friday, based on a 2009 U.S. Supreme Court decision involving partial jury verdicts. Detroit's numbers are still far from 1950, when the city's population peaked at about 1.85 million. DETROIT — Ford Motor is announcing first-quarter earnings after the markets close Wednesday. The automaker's 2024 guidance released in February included adjusted earnings before interest and taxes, or EBIT, of between $10 billion and $12 billion; adjusted free cash flow of $6 billion to $7 billion; and capital spending of $8 billion to $9.5 billion. There is less consensus on Wall Street around Ford's performance than there was for its crosstown rival General Motors , which on Tuesday reported strong first-quarter results and raised its full-year guidance. Ford is Morgan Stanley's "top pick," but others on Wall Street are less bullish on the company. Ford has faced years of inflated warranty costs, including $1.9 billion in 2023, which have affected its earnings.
