United Auto Workers members rally outside Stellantis' Ram 1500 plant in Sterling Heights, Michigan, after the union called a strike at the plant on Oct. 23, 2023. DETROIT – United Auto Workers members at Chrysler owner Stellantis have ratified a new labor contract following a historically contentious round of bargaining between the union and company, according to preliminary results posted Friday by the union. UAW members with Ford Motor are on pace to also ratify their agreement, but are continuing to vote Friday. The Stellantis deal received notable objection at the automaker's Jeep plants in Toledo, Ohio, with 55% of workers there opposing the deal. The contract ratifications come weeks after the automakers and the union reached tentative deals, ending roughly six weeks of targeted strikes by the UAW.

ET at Ford's Kentucky Truck Plant, where the automaker produces Ford Super Duty pickups as well as the Ford Expedition and the Lincoln Navigator. The union's decision to strike the plant, which is Ford's largest in terms of employment and revenue, is a major escalation in its targeted, or "stand up," strikes. Fain said the union expects Stellantis and Ford Motor to follow suit, including battery plant workers in eventual contract agreements. Only 25,200 workers, or roughly 17% of UAW members covered by the expired contracts with the Detroit automakers, are currently on strike.

Unlike prior union leaders, Fain is attempting to negotiate with all three automakers at once, refusing to select a "target" company to focus on while extending deals at the others. He's also been far more confrontational with the automakers compared to previous union leaders, at times launching personal attacks on executives. "I think there's a reasonable chance they strike Stellantis first and then give a couple more days for Ford and GM to give a better offer." The union could use that work stoppage as a warning to GM and Ford to finalize their deals, he said. DETROIT – United Auto Workers members overwhelmingly granted union leaders authorization to strike during ongoing contract negotiations with General Motors , Ford Motor and Stellantis , if warranted. That's in line with support during negotiations four years ago, when 96% of workers who voted supported authorization for a strike. The "strike authorization vote" is part of the union's constitution and viewed as a procedural step in the negotiations. Our goal is to bargain good agreements for our members," UAW President Shawn Fain said Friday during a Facebook Live. And whether or not there's a strike — it's up to Ford, General Motors and Stellantis, because they know what our priorities are.

The union's new leader will be Shawn Fain, a member of the "UAW Members United" reform group and local leader for a Stellantis parts plant in Indiana. Fain, in a statement Saturday, thanked UAW members who voted in the election. He also hailed the election results as a historic change in direction for the embattled union, which he says will take a "more aggressive approach" with its employers. It has been the honor of my life to serve our great union," Curry said. The election results had been delayed several weeks due to a run-off election as well as the close final count.
