Americans are set to potentially break records for expatriation, or renouncing citizenship, this year, not to mention how many wealthy Americans are obtaining second passports. "I've got a client, a very successful Black entrepreneur, who said, 'I'm just worried about civil unrest,'" Lesperance said. What it takes to move abroadIt's not as simple as just packing your bags and hopping on the next flight, says global tax lawyer Ruby Banipal. First, clients need to consider where they want to get a second citizenship. At that point, a tax lawyer would come in to help them sort out their tax planning.

France, EU lawmakers push for sanctions on Turkey next month

FILE PHOTO: Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan attends a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, Russia March 5, 2020. “Confrontation or collaboration, it’s up to them.”The Turkish Foreign Ministry has criticised the EU for discussing sanctions, saying such debate was not helpful. “However, Turkey is a key partner in many areas, so there’s no consensus in the Council (of EU governments). Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said the boarding was an act of “piracy” and summoned EU, German and Italian envoys to protest, which Berlin said was unjustified. “I think now there’s a common understanding that there will be sanctions,” said a senior EU diplomat.

Germany, Turkey trade accusations over interception of Turkish vessel

BERLIN/ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkey and Germany traded barbs on Tuesday after German soldiers boarded a Turkish vessel on behalf of an EU military mission in the Mediterranean, with Berlin calling its NATO ally’s protests unjustified and Ankara saying the move was illegal. It later summoned the EU, German and Italian envoys to Ankara to protest. “The soldiers behaved correctly and acted absolutely in line with the mandate of the European mission Irini,” she said. Turkey denied that it had not responded, saying Irini forces “ignored the written and oral messages sent by Turkish authorities” before the boarding. The incident comes at a time of friction between Turkey and the European Union.

Turkey said the search, at sea southwest of the Greek Peloponnese peninsula, violated international law as permission had not been granted. A German Defence Ministry spokesman also said they had not found anything suspicious by the time they were ordered off the ship. Turkey said the Hamburg violated international law by not waiting for permission to board. “All procedures were followed correctly,” a German Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said, adding that the sailors had withdrawn as soon as Turkey objected.

Soldiers from the frigate Hamburg, part of an EU mission enforcing a U.N. arms embargo, boarded the Roseline A overnight but withdrew after Turkey raised objections with the EU mission, which had ordered the search, the German Defence Ministry said. It summoned the EU, German and Italian ambassadors to hear a protest. “All procedures were followed correctly,” a Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said. Turkey is backing the internationally recognised government in Libya in its fight against Russian- and Egyptian-backed rebels in the east. Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman Hami Aksoy said the Roseline’s captain had shared information with the Hamburg about his ship’s freight and its course.

REUTERS/Yoruk Isik/File PhotoISTANBUL (Reuters) - Turkey said it was extending the seismic survey work of its Oruc Reis ship in a disputed area of the eastern Mediterranean until Nov. 29, in a move that could add to tensions in the region. NATO members Turkey and Greece are locked in a dispute over the extent of their continental shelves and conflicting claims to hydrocarbon resources in the eastern Mediterranean. The row erupted in August when Turkey sent Oruc Reis into waters also claimed by Greece and Cyprus. Along with two other ships, the Ataman and Cengiz Han, Oruc Reis will continue work in an area west of Cyprus, a Turkish naval maritime notice said on Saturday.

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Turkey’s rhetoric on Cyprus is aggravating tensions with the European Union and Ankara must understand that its behaviour is “widening its separation” from the 27-nation bloc, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said on Thursday. FILE PHOTO: EU Foreign Policy Chief Josep Borrell speaks on relations with the U.S. during a plenary session of the European Parliament in Brussels, Belgium November 11, 2020. “We consider that it is important that Turkey understands that its behaviour is widening its separation from the EU ... Cyprus called Erdogan’s visit “provocative and illegal”. “Time is running, and we are approaching a watershed moment in our relationship with Turkey,” Borrell said.

More than a dozen progressive organizations published an open letter to President-elect Joe Biden Tuesday, warning him against appointing anybody with "close ties to Google" to his administration. The groups said Biden should avoid giving former Google CEO Eric Schmidt a role, after a Financial Times story described Schmidt as a possible lead for a new tech task force in Biden's White House. The letter to Biden said appointing Schmidt would risk "fracturing a Democratic coalition" and "alienating an overwhelming majority of the electorate." A source familiar with the matter told Recode that the Biden transition team had not discussed a planned role for Schmidt. One source familiar with the matter also said the Biden transition team had not discussed a planned role for Schmidt.

Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt has been approved to become a citizen of Cyprus, according to a report Monday from Recode. An October notice in Alithia, a Cypriot publication, apparently announced Schmidt and his family had won approval to become citizens. Obtaining citizenship from the European nation would give Schmidt the ability to freely enter European Union and skirt some travel bans, according to the report. Schmidt likely applied for citizenship within the past year, the report said, and his wife, Wendy, and daughter, Sophie, also applied and were approved. Schmidt was Google's chief executive from 2001 to 2011, before he transitioned to executive chairman of Google and then Alphabet until 2018.

NEW YORK - As global head of sustainability at Anheuser Busch InBev ABI.BR, Ezgi Barcenas always keeps her eye on the world at large. “I used to travel internationally 50% of the time and had to remind myself which time zone I’m in,” Barcenas said. Barcenas took a moment to chat with Reuters about how her international perspective and background are keeping her grounded in these unusual times. I’ve learned to harness that vision and curiosity we’d bring to our shows to re-imagine a better world and catch opportunities others may miss. Q. What’s the first thing you want to do when the world opens up again?
