In one of his first moves in office, President Joe Biden directed the Department of Education on Wednesday to extend the payment pause for federal student loan borrowers until at least October 2021. CNBC Select asked four student loan experts to weigh in on what borrowers should do during this extended forbearance period. "After that, build up your emergency fund so that you will have a smooth adjustment when the student loan payments eventually kick back in." Pay off your credit card debt even faster with a balance transfer credit card As you consider your debt repayment priorities, now might be a good time to open a balance transfer credit card. Though the postponement period on federal student loans has been extended, nothing can be certain beyond the Sept. 30, 2021, notes Hornsby.

How he handles it will set the tone for how Americans view his administration going forward, as Mr. Biden himself acknowledged. Mr. Biden bristled at a reporter’s question when he was asked if the goal should be for a higher number. “The brutal truth is it’s going to take months before we can get the majority of Americans vaccinated,” Mr. Biden said.

ROME/MILAN (Reuters) - State-owned Italian bank Monte dei Paschi di Siena has seen no potential bidders come forward yet to scrutinise confidential data after opening its books to suitors on Monday, two sources familiar with the matter said. The virtual data room is likely to be open for at least month, one of the sources said. Monte dei Paschi also faces a Jan. 31 deadline to submit to the European Central Bank (ECB) a plan to fill capital needs worth up to 2.5 billion euros. UniCredit is still debating internally what to do in relation to Monte dei Paschi, a source familiar with the matter had told Reuters. Other banks, including Banco BPM or the Italian arms of Credit Agricole and BNP Paribas, which the Treasury had thought of as potential partners for Monte dei Paschi, have so far failed to show any interest, sources have said.

LONDON (Reuters) - The euro struggled to join a broader risk rally against the dollar on Wednesday as analysts said the risk of extended lockdowns in Europe to combat the spread of COVID-19 and the continent’s lag in a vaccine rollout were weighing on the currency. FILE PHOTO: A picture illustration shows U.S. 100 dollar bank notes taken in Tokyo August 2, 2011. The New Zealand dollar, also a commodity currency like the Aussie, gained 0.25% to $0.7133. The euro forms nearly 60% of the dollar index by weight. It also fell 0.1% against the Japanese yen to 103.81 yen per dollar.
