CNN —Simone Biles’ quest for a record-extending ninth US Gymnastics Championship title began on Friday in Fort Worth, Texas. Biles finished the night on the floor and scored a 15.200 to solidify her lead and enter Sunday with a great chance to win the title. Biles’ fellow all-around Olympic champion Suni Lee finished in fourth place Friday, while reigning Olympic floor champion Jade Carey finished in eighth place. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis attends a hearing on the Georgia election interference case, March 1, 2024, in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S. A California man was indicted by a federal grand jury in Atlanta on charges of threatening Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Georgia announced Friday. The indictment detailed more threats Schultz made, including, "FANI WILLIS WILL BE DEAD IN 2024," and other threats using racial slurs. In a statement released by Willis' office, she referenced GOP state Sen. Bill Cowsert, who is leading an investigation of Willis' office. In March, Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee ruled Willis could continue prosecuting the case, but she and Wade could not work on it together.

CNN —A Georgia state Senate committee investigating allegations of wrongdoing by the Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis heard more than three hours of testimony from defense attorney Ashleigh Merchant that largely went unchallenged by the mostly Republican committee and offered little to no new information about the claims. Merchant is representing one of Donald Trump’s co-defendants in the sprawling 2020 Georgia election interference racketeering case and is seeking to have Willis, a Democrat, removed from the case, possibly endangering the entire prosecution. Republican state Sen. Bill Cowsert, chairman of the committee, told CNN that endgame of the panel is, “to determine whether there has been improper behavior. They’re going hear the evidence…and I’m sure both sides will actually do their role in that particular situation,” Jones said. The panel can amend Georgia law or create new legislation but lacks the power to directly sanction Willis.
