WASHINGTON—A new bill backed by a slate of Senate Democrats would allocate competitive grants to colleges and universities to analyze, digitize and map historic housing discrimination records, creating the first national database of its kind. The focus of the effort is to research covenants attached to housing deeds, which emerged nationwide around the early 20th century, that made it harder for Black people in many cities to own property. Sen. Tina Smith (D., Minn.), who wrote the bill, is working to get Democratic colleagues and at least some Republicans to back the effort after introducing the Mapping Housing Discrimination Act on Thursday afternoon. “The impact of that discrimination endures today,” Ms. Smith said in an interview, adding that the point of the grants was to form a national database that can “shape the policies that we need to put in place to address this longstanding and enduring discrimination.”“I also have no doubt that this research will inspire policy makers and local community activists to come up with new ideas,” she said.

U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet attends a news conference at the European headquarters of the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, December 9, 2020. China's U.N. mission in Geneva, contacted by Reuters for comment, said Xinjiang and Hong Kong were "inalienable parts of China's territory" and that it brooked "no interference by external forces". Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch issued reports this year documenting practices that they said could meet criteria for crimes against humanity in Xinjiang. TEST OF HONG KONG JUDICIARYBachelet told the council that the national security law imposed in Hong Kong a year ago had had a "chilling impact" on democratic space and media in the former British colony. She said 107 people had been arrested under the law, including 57 formally charged, and that the first trials were due this week.

The new candidates, which include carinata and camelina - known as false flax - also represent potential “cover crops”, off-season sources of revenue for farmers to help insulate them from market downturns. A soaring global appetite for animal feed and vegetable oil has already whittled down stockpiles of soybeans and canola. “So there is less certainty.”‘I CAN’T PRODUCE ENOUGH’Nuseed currently sells all carinata production to Saipol, France’s largest biodiesel producer. Prices are rising for diesel fuel used to transport freight as fallout from the Colonial Pipeline shutdown strains capacity for truckers that deliver fuel to gas stations. Colonial Pipeline Co. said Wednesday it has begun to restart operations after shutting off the conduit following a cyberattack last week. Diesel remains generally available even as panic buying by drivers fearing shortages has propelled gasoline prices higher and depleted gas supplies across states including Virginia, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina. Truck-stop operators are leaning on suppliers and bringing in fuel from other markets, with some reporting sporadic supply disruptions before the pipeline restarted operations. Tanker trucks also are sometimes making longer trips to refill after deliveries when local supplies served by the pipeline are depleted.

Hong Kong (CNN) Officials in Hong Kong will soon be able to block people from entering or leaving the territory, raising concerns over the possibility of mainland Chinese-style "exit bans" being used to prevent activists and former lawmakers from leaving. Lee denied that the new law could affect the freedom of movement of Hong Kong residents. However, activists and lawyers contest that the legislation does not adequately differentiate between inbound and outbound travelers, and argue that it could be used against people trying to leave Hong Kong. "If you can stop a Hong Kong citizen from boarding an inbound flight, meaning that anyone who's left Hong Kong cannot come back, that's also a very worrying situation, right?" Drones are only a platform, and what matters for international law is how those platforms are used. When it comes to armed drones, is smaller and more precise necessarily better? Demonstrators burn the US flag during a protest against US drone strikes in the Pakistani tribal region, in Karachi, November 8, 2013. Yet, popular attention so often focuses on this tiny subset of the rules governing collateral damage, eliding these higher-level issues. Blackstone has included language in a new bond deal that caps investors' voting rights at 20%. Typically, bondholders receive voting rights equal to how much bonds they own. Blackstone's effort to cap voting rights, however, highlights weakening lending standards and protections in the high-yield bond and leveraged loan markets. Under the provision, Blackstone can also grant certain bondholders a higher percentage of voting rights regardless of how much outstanding securities they own. While the provision protects the company from opportunistic hedge funds, Covenant Review's Hallock warns that the provision strips away fundamental rights of bond investors.

NBC News reached out to the candidates to ask about their stances on LGBTQ issues. If Republicans win one or both Georgia Senate seats two days later, they will increase their majority. Last year, the House passed the Equality Act in a 236-173 vote, largely along party lines, with eight Republicans voting in favor. President-elect Joe Biden has said it is his goal to pass the Equality Act within his first 100 days in office. ‘A strong and outspoken ally’The Equality Act is not the only policy position where Democratic candidates’ have pledged support for LGBTQ rights.

Stephanie Taylor is the outreach manager at Covenant House Michigan, a shelter for homeless youth ages 18 to 24 located in Detroit. She spends her days making contact with at-risk youth to offer them food, clothing, and medical attention, and encourages them to come stay at the Covenant House shelter. Taylor and her colleagues provide education, employment, and permanent housing opportunities to help youth get back on track and become independent adults. Some of these youth don't like rules, and they've been banned from other shelters for violence, but as outreach workers, it's our job to service them. For these young people we serve at Covenant House, we workers become their aunts or uncles or families.

Some 42,000 refugees have fled over the border to Sudan and TPLF rockets have hit neighbouring Eritrea. Tigrayan forces have fired rockets at the airport of Eritrea’s capital Asmara, while Ethiopian soldiers have been pulled from peacekeeping missions in Somalia and South Sudan. The U.N. mission in South Sudan said it was aware of the three soldiers’ repatriation. Although Ethiopia is ultimately responsible for the conduct and movement of its 2,000 troops in South Sudan, the statement said, discrimination due to ethnicity could violate international law. Ethiopia has described the Tigray fighting as an internal law enforcement matter.
