Dubai International Airport ranked as the second busiest in 2023, up from fifth place in 2022 and fourth place in 2019, according to Airports Council International's preliminary ranking, which was released on Monday. The resurgence of international travel has been a bright spot for airlines with big international networks, while ultra-low-cost, domestic-focused U.S. airlines have struggled in recent months. Domestic U.S. airports continued to post big gains in passenger counts, but some slipped in the rankings compared with the middle of the pandemic, when international travel restrictions limited long-haul trips abroad. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Delta Air Lines ' biggest hub, once again topped the list of the busiest airports, serving 104.7 million passengers, ACI said. Here are the 2023 rankings (with 2022 rankings in parentheses):

LONDON – Travelers to and within Europe this year should be able to avoid the levels of disruption experienced during last year's summer of chaos, but higher ticket prices look set to stay. A number of European airlines limited ticket sales, canceled flights, and adjusted timetables, as airports imposed passenger traffic caps. But the unique circumstances of last year's travel chaos are "largely behind us," according to Airports Council International (ACI). Heathrow Airport, Europe's largest airport by passenger volume, said it is "well prepared to serve demand over the summer peak" this year. While Gatwick Airport, the U.K.'s second-largest, told CNBC via email that it's "not anticipating the same issues airports encountered last summer."

Passengers aboard a Delta flight had to disembark using the jet slide Wednesday after their plane landed at Charlotte Douglas International Airport without part of its landing gear extended. An inflatable slide extends from a door of the plane and firefighters appear to be helping passengers disembark on the slide. "While this is a rare occurrence, Delta flight crews train extensively to safely manage through many scenarios and flight 1092 landed safely without reported injuries." Controllers saw that the nose landing gear doors were open, but the gear hadn't descended and the pilots landed the plane without the nose gear. Less than four hours after the landing, Skotarczak, the passenger from Buffalo, was at work, but only with his cellphone and a bottle of water.

The city of Phoenix's aviation department, which runs the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, has launched a childcare program for airport workers and plans to build a childcare facility on airport property. Since its launch, 37 airport workers have joined the program, which covers daycare costs partially. At Kelowna International Airport in British Columbia, Canada, construction is underway for a daycare primarily for children of employees who work on airport property. Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport is similarly weighing offering childcare on-site or nearby in a bid to offer attractive benefits to workers, said airport spokesperson Mindy Kershner. And then there are others - like Jared Barker, a 33-year-old baggage handler at Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport who quit and left the industry altogether last year after mass departures during the pandemic led to a heavier workload.

By 12:42 p.m., DFW said the fuel pump was working again — but that overall operations would still be behind schedule for much of the day.
