Emily KrivogradAt the end of the day, I wouldn't go out of my way to visit CosMc's. None of the menu items seemed like a particularly great value, either, considering I can get something I already know I enjoy from a similar chain for about the same price. CosMc's is set to open 10 locations by the end of 2024, but so far, the chain hasn't even reached half that number. Even so, CosMc's still has a long way to go before it builds a loyal fan base like McDonald's or Starbucks have. But I'll probably just stick to waiting in line at Starbucks — and maybe return to CosMc's for some McPops.

New York CNN —Dunkin’ is adding an energy drink to its menu to capture some of the buzz generated by heavily caffeinated beverages, which are surging in popularity. But the menu addition comes with a risk: Panera Bread is facing multiple lawsuits over its its own energy drink. The Dunkin’ energy drink has less caffeine for a similarly sized cup with 192 mg for both flavors, according to its website. Despite the controversy, energy drinks are big sellers for chains. At Dutch Bros, a fast-growing chain, its lineup of energy drinks accounts for a quarter of its sales.

New York CNN —McDonald’s new trendy beverage-led spinoff CosMc’s is pulling in younger customers at a faster clip than a typical Mickey D’s with Big Macs and fries, according to one early traffic estimate. McDonald’s unveiled its CosMc’s specialty drinks cafe spinoff in December, with the first location opened in Bolingbrook, Illinois. That first CosMc’s location saw more than double the number of visits that a typical McDonald’s saw chainwide in the same month, despite only being open since Dec.7, according to a report from Placer.ai, which uses location data from mobile devices to estimate visits to specific locations. CosMc’s generated triple the number of visits per square foot than an average McDonald’s restaurant (CosMc’s has a roughly 2,500 square feet footprint compared to 4,000 to 4,500 square feet for the average McDonald’s location), the firm said. RJ Hottovy, head of analytical research with Placer.ai, said that the one CosMc’s location sometimes has to accommodate spillover traffic in a separate parking lot because the drive-thru lanes were often at full capacity.

New York CNN —McDonald’s is getting rid of one its biggest perks. The fast food chain is eliminating its self-serve soda machines by 2032 at its US restaurants, the company said, explaining that the change is will make the experience consistent for customers and crew across the chain. For decades, McDonald’s let customers fill (and refill) their own drinks at its dining rooms. McDonald’s future includes restaurant designs with smaller or no dining rooms (and high-tech drive thrus) to reflect that new reality. The chain also recently teased another major change, called “CosMc’s,” a new small-format location that includes a reduced dining area.

Customers can either order ahead via the Chick-fil-A app and then receive their meals at one of two lanes dedicated for mobile orders or order as usual through a regular drive-thru lane. The pick-up location is just that: Customers order ahead and then walk into the store to pick up their orders. Speedy service is key for fast food restaurants, especially at the drive-thru, where a long line or a bad experience can scare off customers. Taco Bell has also been testing out drive-thru locations with second-story kitchens, delivering tacos to drive-thru customers via a “vertical lift.”Chick-fil-A tends to earn top marks for its drive-thru, and for its service in general. In a drive-thru survey last year in which Chick-fil-A, along with Carl’s Jr., earned the top spot for satisfaction with service, the chicken chain failed to make the top five for order accuracy.
