And because my previous bank paid me on Friday, I was, in fact, getting paid two days earlier than I would have if I hadn't switched banks. Even though I'm still only getting paid once every two weeks, I feel less financially strained. So, why does getting paid on Friday prompt higher spending? "Hypothetically [getting paid on Friday] can lead to the thought: 'I get paid and then my money disappears quickly,'" she says. Regardless of why, I know getting paid Wednesdays makes me feel less like I'm living paycheck to paycheck.

Brazil’s Congress opened an inquiry into the matter, which will eventually produce a written report and may suggest that prosecutors bring criminal charges. The committee has called former Bolsonaro aides to testify about an alleged conspiracy to overturn electoral results which they have denied. Opposition lawmakers have sought to turn up evidence that the government was to blame for the rioting because it failed to provide adequate security in the capital. Some opposition lawmakers have focused on a portion of security footage showing him taking pictures to suggest the scenes were staged. “We’re here today at an anti-climax, listening to a working journalist who was taking photographs,” said pro-government lawmaker Rogerio Correia.

LISBON, June 20 (Reuters) - Portugal plans to swap the entire 140 million euro ($152.91 million) debt it is owed by Cape Verde for investments in the archipelago's environmental and climate fund, Prime Minister Antonio Costa said on Tuesday. The two countries had already agreed in January to swap 12 million euros of debt repayments scheduled until 2025 and then assess the effectiveness of this mechanism in concrete projects. "We are sure the assessment we will make in 2025 will be positive and that we will be able to extend this mechanism to all 140 million euros of debt throughout its maturity," Costa said. Cape Verde's Silva said the investments will increase the country's resilience and achieve sustainable development goals. Cape Verde is 80% dependent on imported fossil fuel energy, which has risen sharply in price following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

A time of celebration in Guyana as it prepared to mark its independence day this week turned to mourning on Monday after at least 20 people, many of them children, were killed when a fire engulfed a girls’ dormitory at a school in the central part of the South American country. The country’s president described the fatal blaze as “horrific” and a “major disaster.”The ages of the victims are not known, but students enrolled at the school are between 12 and 16. Several others were injured in the fire, which broke out late Sunday in Mahdia, a gold mining town about 120 miles southwest of the capital, Georgetown. Seven students in critical condition were being evacuated to the capital. “The focus now is on the children to ensure that we do everything, to give them as much help as we can,” President Mohamed Irfaan Ali told journalists early Monday at Ogle airport, also known as Eugene F. Correia International Airport, where he was organizing a “full-scale emergency” plan.
LISBON, Jan 23 (Reuters) - Portugal has signed an agreement to swap Cape Verde's debt for investments in an environmental and climate fund that is being established by the archipelago nation off West Africa's coast, Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa said on Monday. The former Portuguese colony, which is already suffering from rising sea levels and significant biodiversity loss due to increasing ocean acidity, owes around 140 million euros ($152 million) to the Portuguese state and over 400 million to its banks and other entities. Climate change is a challenge that takes place on a global scale and no country will be (environmentally) sustainable if all countries are not sustainable," Costa said during a state visit to Cape Verde in remarks broadcast by RTP television. Cape Verde Prime Minister Ulisses Correia e Silva said his country needed to urgently enable mechanisms and financing instruments to support such solutions and deal with natural emergencies. The runoff shaped up as a close contest between President Jair Bolsonaro and his political nemesis, former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. There were multiple reports of what critics said appeared attempts to suppress the turnout of likely da Silva voters. Most opinion polls gave a lead to da Silva, universally known as Lula, though political analysts agreed the race grew increasingly tight in recent weeks. But while da Silva topped the Oct. 2 first-round elections with 48% of the vote, Bolsonaro was a strong second at 43%, showing opinion polls significantly underestimated his popularity. "If da Silva wins, we're going to have a problem," said Pedro Correia, 40, who joined his wife and two children in Copacabana.
PARIS — The European Court of Human Rights ruled on Tuesday against the parents of missing British toddler Madeleine McCann, saying that Portugal had given them a fair hearing in their libel battle against a former Portuguese policeman. Kate and Gerry McCann sued Amaral for libel. In 2015, a Portuguese court ruled in their favor, ordering Amaral to pay them damages. “We took action for one and only one reason: Mr Amaral’s unfounded claims were having a detrimental impact on the search for Madeleine,” the statement said. “The focus is now rightly on the search for Madeleine and her abductor(s).
