More than a million people thronged Brazil’s Copacabana beach for a free Madonna concert on Saturday, braving the heat to see the end of her “Celebration” world tour. The sand and oceanfront boulevard around Rio de Janeiro’s famed beach were filled for several blocks by a crowd the city estimated at 1.6 million. Rio’s state and city governments said they spent $3.9 million on the concert. Rio’s state and city governments said they spent 20 million reais ($3.9 million) on the concert, while the rest was financed by private sponsors. The authorities estimate the concert could bring about 300 million reais to Rio’s economy.

It was the second death of a Swift fan in four days. Fans also reported fainting from extreme heat, being mugged or getting caught up in a police raid. Inside the stadium, concertgoers complained of unbearable heat and some said they had difficulty getting access to water. “Come on stage, I want to see you!”The postponement was followed by chaos outside the stadium.

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Tensions remained high Friday in Rio de Janeiro on the eve of the Copa Libertadores soccer final, following a brawl between fan clubs and a fierce police response on the Copacabana beach the previous day. The incident marred the excitement ahead of the game between Brazil’s Fluminense and Argentina’s Boca Juniors, due on Saturday at Rio de Janeiro’s famed Maracana stadium. A mob swept across Copacabana beach, sending hundreds of others stampeding away from the commotion, some clutching caipirinhas and hastily-gathered clothes. The meeting was called after Thursday's brawl on Copacabana that saw nine arrested across the city's affluent southern zone, police said. “Fluminense fans came to take photos with the Argentines and the atmosphere was relaxed until 19:30 when the police arrived, hitting people with batons, firing shots and using tear gas,” Barbero said.

For first-timers, a five-mile stroll along Copacabana and Ipanema beaches — Rio de Janeiro’s two most fabled sand parentheses — will stir up feelings even in those who have long and unironically listed “walks on the beach” as a favorite pastime. Such reactions may range from counterfactual nostalgia (“Imagine coming of age in a place like this”) to cultural aha moments (“Bossa nova makes so much sense now”) to medium-term reverie (“What are the rules on Brazil’s digital-nomad visa again?”). More than 20 visits in, I still turn some kind of emotional every time I return to Rio and set foot on the boardless boardwalk where the vast majority of this stroll takes place. Brazilians call such a beachfront sidewalk the “calçadão,” but forget pronouncing it and focus on its official sound: a thousand flip-flops slapping the wave-patterned Portuguese pavement.

“I WANTED TO be a priest,” said João Paulo Campos, the owner of Velho Adonis, a bustling boteco, or Brazilian-style tavern, in Rio de Janeiro. “This bar became my church instead.” Indeed, after drinking countless draft beers as a regular, Mr. Campos, 41, bought Adonis three years ago and renovated the 60-plus-year-old establishment, making his devotion to these idiosyncratic watering holes complete. “A boteco isn’t just a place to drink,” he said of his calling. Often opened by immigrants and operated in informal grocery-style shops, in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, some botecos found themselves on shaky footing. In 2019, initial warnings about the closure of Bar Luiz—known for the best chopp, or draft beer, in Rio—prompted mourning from Cariocas of all stripes.

BRASILIA, Brazil — Skittish Brazilian authorities on Wednesday spared no effort to boost security in the face of a social media flyer promoting a “mega-protest to retake power” in two dozen cities. On Brasilia’s esplanade surrounded by federal government buildings, authorities had designated an area for protest and stationed police and national guard troops. Just one couple showed, dressed in the same Brazil soccer jerseys that thousands of rioters wore four days earlier. Citing the call to protest, a Supreme Court justice ordered local authorities in cities across Brazil to prevent protesters from blocking roads or occupying public spaces and buildings. Justice Minister Flávio Dino told local press this week that authorities have identified some of the protest’s financiers.

But while da Silva topped the Oct. 2 first-round elections with 48% of the vote, Bolsonaro was a strong second at 43%, showing opinion polls significantly underestimated his popularity. "If da Silva wins, we're going to have a problem," said Pedro Correia, 40, who joined his wife and two children in Copacabana.

But it was Astrud Gilberto ’s single of “The Girl From Ipanema,” released in 1964, that transformed the bossa nova into a global sensation.

Social media users have falsely claimed that a 2021 video of a demonstration on Rio de Janeiro’s Copacabana beach in support of Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro is in fact from 2022. It shows large crowds waving Brazilian flags on Copacabana beach and is captioned: “Just remember the Immense crowd coming out a few days ago in support of Bolsonaro”. While the clip does indeed show a demonstration in support of the incumbent, it is from September 2021, not "a few days ago” (here). Reuters Fact Check Brazil has addressed another video of the same event being shared as if it is from the 2022 election period. The video dates to 2021 not 2022.
