Read previewIn his early 20s, one of Eric Cooper's first bosses gave him some sound money advice: Contribute as much as you can to your 401(k). AdvertisementCooper maxed out his 401(k) for more than two decades and accumulated enough to retire in his late 40s. While there are a lot of restrictions, it made sense for Cooper, who was fully committed to early retirement. At some point, we're going to have to start spending that money, and the IRS is going to start taxing it," he said.

"They're all paid off and bring in about $65,000 a year in rent," he said, adding that they played an important role in his early retirement. Courtesy of Eric CooperThe idea of early retirement didn't start to percolate until 2019. "That's when I found the Mr. Money Mustache website and this article that explained the simple math behind early retirement and the 4% rule." According to the 4% rule, which helps retirees determine how much they can spend without running out of money, Cooper had a big enough portfolio to stop working. Using Rule 72(t) to access his retirement money without penaltyWhen you contribute to retirement accounts like a 401(k) and IRA, you can start taking penalty-free withdrawals after age 59½. He rolled over $300,000 because that's about how much money he'll need for a $20,000 annual distribution each year until he's 59 ½.

In late November, the panel temporarily blocked the new structures for the State Board of Elections and boards in all 100 counties from taking effect while Cooper’s lawsuit was heard. The state elections board has five members appointed by the governor — a format going back over 100 years — from candidate lists provided by the major parties. Currently, county boards are five members, with state board members naming four positions and Cooper one. Should the board changes be upheld by courts in the coming months, new appointments could happen as general election campaigning heats up and voting approaches. The elections board lawsuit is one of many that Cooper has filed over the past seven years challenging General Assembly laws that he argues unlawfully weakens his position.

There was more school pride in my nephew's school in TexasWalking Cooper's school grounds, the sense of school pride was evident. The school mascot was on display; there were banners throughout the school, and lots of school events were being promoted. There are no school mascots, no banners, few school events, and, to be honest, a lot less school spirit. In 2021, my son's school made the state soccer championships, and I went to offer support. The legislation was among new Republican-backed restrictions across the country following the 2020 presidential election, when then-President Donald Trump falsely attributed his loss to fraud. North Carolina is expected to be a closely contested state in this year's presidential contest. Under the new law, a voter who uses same-day registration is sent a postcard to confirm their address. Young voters and minority voters, both groups that tend to vote Democratic, take advantage of same-day registration more frequently. Between 100,000 and 120,000 residents use same-day registration in presidential years, according to the state elections board.

JERUSALEM (AP) — Iran is “very directly involved” in ship attacks that Yemen's Houthi rebels have carried out during Israel's war against Hamas, the U.S. Navy's top Mideast commander told The Associated Press on Monday. The tempo of Houthi attacks on shipping appears to have slowed for the time being as the U.S. and its allies have increased their naval patrols in the region. A series of attacks blamed on Iran and ship seizures by Tehran followed the collapse of Iran's nuclear deal with world powers. However, Cooper maintained Iran had been directly fueling the Houthi attacks on shipping. There’s no secret there.”Cooper described the ship attacks striking the Mideast as the worst since the so-called Tanker War of the 1980s.

Over 100,000 people have used such “same-day registration” in North Carolina during each of the last two presidential election years, so slight adjustments in the closely divided state could make a difference in this November's elections for president, governor and other statewide positions. Early in-person voting — and thus same-day registration — for the March 5 primaries begins Feb. 15. Giving people only one chance to verify by mail would be a “substantial burden on same-day registrants who cast a ballot,” Schroeder said. Schroeder acknowledged there are legitimate interests in using address verification to promote preserving the integrity of the election process and instilling voter confidence. But he wrote the plaintiffs have shown the “precise interests asserted in this case likely do not outweigh the substantial burden on the rights of same-day registrants who cast a ballot.”In 2020, about 2,150 same-day registration applicants in North Carolina failed the address verification.

NEW YORK (AP) — CNN's new chief executive says the company needs to recapture the “swagger and innovation” of its early days — and that, he says, increasingly means embracing a future outside of television. Mark Thompson, appointed CNN's chief executive last fall after stints at The New York Times and BBC, outlined a strategy to his staff Wednesday that included a corporate restructuring but few external specifics on how that transformation will take place. In the past, CNN hasn't always “gone the extra mile to squeeze every bit of value from the outstanding news and other intellectual property we create,” he wrote. “No longer.”He said the CNN.com website needs “drastic modernization.” The network also needs multiple digital projects to complement the CNN Max streaming service, he said. LONDON, Dec 1 (Reuters) - Co-writing, directing, producing and starring in his Leonard Bernstein biopic "Maestro" was a terrifying undertaking for Bradley Cooper that turned into a journey of joy and courage. A passion project years in the making, "Maestro" is the follow up to Cooper's directorial debut, "A Star Is Born". Bernstein, who died in 1990, was a celebrated U.S. conductor and composer, who wrote classical music and iconic hit musicals like "West Side Story". Making Yellow’s "loan repayment terms more flexible, is a commonsense step to keep Yellow’s trucks on the road, and keep its workforce gainfully employed," he wrote. Yellow's assets include 12,000 trucks and 35,000 trailers, along with hundreds of terminals, according to its bankruptcy court filing. Yellow said in its bankruptcy filing it had $2.15 billion in assets and $2.59 billion in debt.
