Low-income families who are robbed of their grocery funds may no longer get reimbursed if Congress doesn’t act by Sept. 30. Since late 2022, states have been authorized to use federal dollars to pay back victims of SNAP skimming thanks to a provision passed by lawmakers. Dutch Ruppersberger, D-Md., who has advocated on behalf of SNAP skimming victims for years. “It’s frustrating and, frankly, very confusing that they don’t view this as a priority.”Despite the directive expiring, SNAP skimming continues to be a pervasive problem. Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., proposed a bill in March that would require chip-enabled SNAP EBT cards and other safeguards, but the bill has yet to advance.

New York CNN —For DirecTV subscribers frustrated by the loss of ESPN and other Disney-owned channels, the TV provider is offering some compensation as the blackout stretches into its third day. The company is offering credits of at least $20 to customers who have DirecTV, DirecTV Stream and U-Verse services — but customers won’t get the credit automatically. They must go to a special website and apply for it using their account’s email, and the credit will show up on a future bill. “We’re pursuing every avenue to get your station back,” DirecTV said on the website. “The Walt Disney Co. is once again refusing any accountability to consumers, distribution partners, and now the American judicial system,” Rob Thun, chief content officer at DirecTV, said in a previous statement.

A study published in the Journal of Hospitality Marketing & Management in June found that describing a product as using AI lowers a customer’s intention to buy it. “Way before people even heard about AI, those movies shaped people’s perception of what robots that run by AI can do to humanity,” he said. …and a lack of transparencyAnother part of the equation influencing customers is the perceived risk around AI – particularly with how it handles users’ personal data. This lack of transparency is something that Gursoy warns has the potential to sour customers’ perceptions towards brands they may have already come to trust. “Rather than simply putting ’AI-powered’ or ’run by AI,’ telling people how this can help them will ease the consumer’s fears.”

The credit card giant American Express has acquired Tock, a restaurant reservation and event management company, from the digital commerce platform Squarespace for $400 million, American Express said on Friday. The purchase of the reservation system in an all-cash deal shows that American Express is continuing its pursuit of the market for dining-related services, especially after its acquisition in 2019 of Resy, a rival of Tock, which is based in Chicago. The credit card company is acting on insights that its customers are spending prodigiously on eating out, it said in a statement. Restaurants were a growing spending category for American Express cardholders, reaching a “high watermark” of $100 billion in transactions in 2023, Howard Grosfield, president of the U.S. consumer services division, said in an interview on Friday. “The passion and interest in dining and dining-related experiences just continues to grow,” Mr. Grosfield said.

The class of 2024 is facing a tough job market. Hiring has slowed across the U.S., and entry-level jobs are getting more competitive in the wake of white-collar layoffs. Tai Walker, a senior at William Paterson University in Wayne, New Jersey, started her job search in March 2024 and has submitted over 100 applications. Walker says she's researching artificial intelligence and other tech boot camps to broaden her skill set and increase her job prospects. Even though some entry-level jobs have gotten harder to land, industries experiencing staffing shortages like education and construction are still hiring new college grads.

Google Joins Effort to Help Spot Content Made With A.I.

Google, whose work in artificial intelligence helped make A.I.-generated content far easier to create and spread, now wants to ensure that such content is traceable as well. The tech giant said on Thursday that it was joining an effort to develop credentials for digital content, a sort of “nutrition label” that identifies when and how a photograph, a video, an audio clip or another file was produced or altered — including with A.I. The announcement follows a similar promise announced on Tuesday by Meta, which like Google has enabled the easy creation and distribution of artificially generated content. Its Bard chatbot is connected to some of the company’s most popular consumer services, such as Gmail and Docs. On YouTube, which Google owns and which will be included in the digital credential effort, users can quickly find videos featuring realistic digital avatars pontificating on current events in voices powered by text-to-speech services.

NEW YORK (AP) — American Express rolled out several updates to its Delta SkyMiles credit cards Thursday that will give additional benefits to users, part of efforts to soothe sore Delta Air Lines customers who have considered abandoning the airline after last year’s SkyMiles loyalty fiasco. AmEx customers get access to Delta's airport lounges and are able to transfer their Membership Rewards points to Delta, among other benefits. To give a sense of scale, Delta CEO Ed Bastion told investors in June that roughly 1% of the entire U.S. economy is spend on Delta's credit cards. So, when Delta made alterations to its SkyMiles loyalty program last year, it was largely seen by Delta customers as a watering down of its program, and it caused turbulence between the two companies. Part of those changes required Delta customers to spend large sums of money on airfare or on the Delta credit card to be given elite status on the airline.

Dear Tripped Up,After graduating from college in 2022 and working for a year, I used my bonus and some of my savings to book a nine-day Mediterranean cruise on Norwegian Cruise Line for my partner and me. Our $7,657 cruise package included airfare from Atlanta to Barcelona, Spain, via Newark, and Norwegian’s own BookSafe Travel Protection Plan, which included travel insurance and also allowed me to “cancel for any reason” for a 75 percent credit. So we spent the night in the Newark airport, paid for a return flight to Atlanta the next morning and canceled the cruise and remaining air legs. I would have moved on to help another Tripped Up reader, but Norwegian’s use of the responsibility-shirking phrase “as a gesture of good will” bugged me. I wanted to know why BookSafe didn’t cover you, and what other cruise customers can do to protect themselves.

Post-earnings moves are top of mind for Morgan Stanley, which noted that they've been subdued throughout 2023. Its strategists are also eyeing corporate guidance and subsequent earnings revisions, which could determine whether analysts' pessimism will continue. Recalled WanaBana puree still on Dollar Tree shelves - US FDA
  + stars: | 2023-11-22 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
Nov 22 (Reuters) - The WanaBana Apple Cinnamon Puree, a product potentially contaminated with lead, was still being sold at Dollar Tree (DLTR.O) stores despite a recall that began last month, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said on Wednesday. In response to the FDA's Wednesday announcement, Dollar Tree said it had already instructed stores to remove the product from shelves and that they no longer sell that flavor on its website. The product was available nationally through multiple retailers including Amazon, Dollar Tree and other online outlets, the FDA said. Wanabana LLC, the maker of the product, and Amazon.com (AMZN.O) did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comment. The FDA on Oct. 31 shared the results with Wanabana, which then initiated a voluntary recall.

CNN —It’s a carriage fight that could lead to the dismantling — or revolution — of the cable television bundle. Charter argues that it is paying a premium for Disney content ($2.2 billion in 2023), but that much of the first-class, buzzy content is actually on platforms like Disney+, not the linear channels. And it says it has proposed “creative ways” to make Disney’s DTC offerings available to Charter subscribers. But, in Disney’s eyes, why would it give away access to its expensive DTC content at no additional cost to Charter subscribers? “The Walt Disney Company and Charter have the opportunity to work together on transforming the industry for the long-term benefit of both companies and their customers,” Charter said.

On its surface, the quarrel is about how much Disney can charge Charter for its content, and how much Charter’s customers will pay for access to Disney’s streaming apps. Charter is positioning the blackout of Disney’s channels, including ESPN, as a fight over the future of TV. Disney has said it has “proposed creative ways to make Disney’s direct-to-consumer services available to their Spectrum TV subscribers.”How has Disney responded? Until Disney and Charter reach an agreement, the company’s TV channels, including ESPN, will be dark for the 15 million people who subscribe to Charter’s Spectrum service. There’s a chance that with Disney’s channels on Spectrum going dark, Charter’s customers might just cancel their subscriptions and opt for alternatives.
