The Bank of America Institute found the top eight cities where people are moving for cheaper rent. Bank of America shares the top eight cities people are moving to for cheaper rent. The rent hikes are driving people to move to cheaper areas, according to Bank of America. That discrepancy between Bank of America's data and the official rate of rent inflation indicates that people are moving to find more affordable rent instead of staying put, the bank said. Related Video Why rents are still setting record highs in some US citiesThis isn't a new trend — the pandemic led to many people moving to places with cheaper rent as remote work became normalized. Bank of America identified eight cities where people are moving to for cheaper rent below the national average, indicated by a net positive population inflow in Q3 2024.

It isn't an accident that people who want to cancel a subscription often have to navigate a web of bureaucracy and confusion. "Actual affirmative consent from a consumer," Witte said, would establish trust between the consumer and the company, boosting loyalty. Along with litigation from the CFPB, state attorneys general have pursued legal action against big companies over hard-to-cancel subscriptions. Last year, Letitia James, New York's attorney general, sued SiriusXM over claims that the radio company trapped customers in subscriptions and maintained a complicated and burdensome cancellation process. Wells Fargo CEO Charlie Scharf gave CNBC's Jim Cramer a positive read on the consumer landscape. "We don't sit here and say risks don't exist — But what we see looks pretty, pretty strong." Wells Fargo's most recent quarter topped Wall Street's expectations, and shares surged more than 4% last Friday just after the report. By Tuesday's close, Wells Fargo was up 1.40%. While Scharf said Wells Fargo does care about its quarterly results, he suggested the market can obsess over reports more than management does.

The Fed cut interest rates in its September meeting, which is the first cut in years. Experts say not to rush to action with your cash savings — but start doing some research. But, the Fed finally cut interest rates by 50 basis points at its meeting on September 18 — the first rate cut since March 2020. This is true now, but it will be just as true if the Fed continues to drop the federal funds rate in the future. However, interest rate increases could lead to having to sell the note on the secondary market at a loss.

From leggings to lip gloss, there's a dupe for almost any brand-name product. Buying a knockoff used to be a consumer's dirty little secret, largely because a "fake" was considered inferior to the real thing, not to mention the economic cost and intellectual property rights infringement. But brand imitators, also known as dupes — short for duplicates — have elbowed their way into the mainstream and are now even cool. "It's not a direct knockoff, it's kind of revising something that's very chic from a designer world into a more accessible product," Walker said. Even when consumers can get the real thing, nearly 33% of adults intentionally purchased a dupe of a premium product at some point, according to a report by Morning Consult.

Apple Intelligence, however, represents an entirely new technology with the potential change how we all interact with our devices. Over the years, McDonald's has been able to fold in some noncore items — namely, coffee and chicken. It's not just consumer demand that's keeping McDonald's menu limited to the more-traditional, less-than-body-boosting items — it's its franchisees, too. CNBC's Jim Cramer on Wednesday said most consumers are not necessarily hurting for cash, but are sick of high prices and on the hunt for bargains. "Let's suspend the notion that the consumer's totally strapped for cash, that's wrong," he said. To Cramer, consumers are flocking to bargain outfits like Walmart and Costco , and he pointed out that the latter's low-cost signature brands are especially appealing. He named TJX , Ollie's , Ross Stores and Burlington Stores , all up year-to-date at 17.83%, 29.54%, 7.48% and 23.05% respectively. "We know apparel inflation has been sticky in the consumer price index, but these four off-price chains are cutting the price of apparel aggressively," he said.

Back in February, used electric vehicle prices dipped below used gasoline-powered vehicle prices for the first time ever, and the pricing cliff keeps getting steeper as car buyers reject any "premium" tag formerly associated with EVs. In June 2023, average used EV prices were over 25% higher than used gas car prices, but by May, used EVs were on average 8% lower than the average price for a used gasoline-powered car in U.S. Over the past year, gasoline-powered used vehicle prices have declined between 3-7%, while electric vehicle prices have decreased 30-39%. There are many more vehicles in the used market than new car market, and used vehicle value does rapidly depreciate as a rule. As more EVs enter the used market at lower prices, the EV market does become available to a wider market of potential first-time EV owners.

Davidson thinks the artificial intelligence plans Apple unveiled on Monday will lead to a new era for the iPhone and open up possibilities for the tech company as it asserts itself in the AI race. Analyst Gil Luria upgraded Apple to buy and raised his price target to $230 per share from $200, which suggests a roughly 19% upside from Monday's $193.12 close. Luria's upgrade comes on the heels of Apple's announcement of its long-awaited generative AI initiatives , which it calls "Apple Intelligence," at its Worldwide Developers Conference, or WWDC, on Monday. That could lead to a much-needed iPhone upgrade cycle, Luria said, raising his fiscal year 2025 estimates above consensus on the expectation of an AI-driven boost for the smartphone maker. "Importantly, Apple is uniquely positioned to offer these capabilities, and may be the only one capable of doing so any time soon," Luria added.
