While the Dow rose to 35,725.11 points, crossing its intraday high of 35,679.13 points hit in August, all three main indexes were on course for their strongest November since 2020. The S&P 500 (.SPX) and the tech-heavy Nasdaq (.IXIC) were also poised for their biggest monthly percentage gain since July 2022, on signs of cooling price pressures. The personal consumption expenditure (PCE) index - the Fed's preferred inflation gauge - showed inflation remained unchanged in October on a monthly basis, against economists' projections of a 0.1% increase. Core inflation, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, rose 0.2% on a monthly basis, in line with estimates. But most megacap stocks edged lower, with Tesla (TSLA.O) down 1.4% and leading declines, keeping the S&P 500 (.SPX) and Nasdaq (.SPX) under pressure.

Friday's announcements suggest lawmakers will continue to pile pressure on Gruenberg over revelations about a key agency in the Biden administration's financial reform agenda. In a letter, Republican members of the House Financial Services Committee on Friday publicly notified Gruenberg of a probe announced earlier this week. An FDIC spokesperson told Reuters the agency would be "fully transparent and cooperative" with the committee's investigation. An FDIC OIG representative told Reuters on Friday the office had received the Senate Democrats' request and was reviewing it. "Chairman Gruenberg, the viability of your leadership is in question," wrote House Financial Services Committee Chair Patrick McHenry and senior members Bill Huizenga and Andy Barr, all Republicans.

U.S. gold futures fell 0.2% to $1,961.10 . Denting bullion's appeal, the dollar index (.DXY) was up 0.4%, while benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury yields rebounded after a revision of retail sales data showed strong gains in September. Bullion gained over 1% in the previous session after data showed that U.S. consumer prices were unchanged in October. U.S. producer prices fell by the most in 3-1/2 years in October, the latest indication of subsiding inflation pressures. While gold is considered an inflation hedge, rising interest rates dull non-yielding bullion's appeal.

Domestic equipment manufacturers, such as toolmaker Naura (002371.SZ) and etching equipment maker AMEC, are winning a much higher proportion of tenders from Chinese foundries than in previous years, as chipmakers race to replace foreign-made equipment with domestically made alternatives, research showed. "There is definitely huge progress happening in the Chinese semiconductor equipment space, as reflected in the strong revenue growth metrics," he said. The Huatai Securities report revealed that for the first eight months of 2023, only one tender for lithography equipment was awarded to a Chinese company, out of many bids. "Local players still lack capability to supply a full set of equipment, such as EUV," said Nori Chiou, investment director at White Oak Capital, saying Chinese manufacturers are focused on covering mature node equipment. Despite Friday's pullback, the dollar index was headed for eight straight weeks of gains, the longest such streak since 2014. "There's a lot of reasoning to ask whether dollar strength is going too far." In afternoon trading, the dollar index , which measures the greenback against six major peers, was flat at 105.05. That said, Vassili Serebriakov, FX strategist, at UBS in New York, said while eight weeks are an unusually long stretch of dollar strength, the currency's gains are getting smaller every week. The euro , the largest component in the dollar index, was on track for eight straight weeks of losses and down 0.7% on the week.

Companies U.s. Commodity Futures Trading Commission FollowWASHINGTON, Sept 7 (Reuters) - A U.S. District Court judge has ordered a South African to pay over $1.7 billion in restitution to victims for operating a fraudulent commodity pool worth roughly that amount in bitcoin, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission announced Thursday. The order against Mirror Trading International Proprietary Limited (MTI) resolves an enforcement case the CFTC had filed against the company and its CEO, Cornelius Johannes Steynberg. In a June enforcement order, the CFTC claimed that MTI solicited bitcoin online from thousands of people to purportedly operate a commodity pool. In reality, only a small portion of the pooled bitcoin was ever invested, at a loss, and the rest was "misappropriated," according to the CFTC. The company ultimately filed for bankruptcy in 2021, shortly after which South African authorities launched a fraud investigation.

The weather system is not expected to hit major oil producing platforms in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico. However, oil major Chevron Corp (CVX.N) evacuated some staff from three platforms in the region. Expectations of a steep decline in U.S. crude oil stockpiles have also benefited oil prices, UBS analyst Giovanni Staunovo said. U.S. crude oil inventories are expected to have dropped by 3.3 million barrels in the latest week, according to an extended Reuters poll on Tuesday. "Even with the potential for some demand destruction (from hurricane Idalia), the coming crude oil supply squeeze is becoming more painfully obvious," said Price Futures Group analyst Phil Flynn.
