Prices of cocoa have more than tripled over the last year, creating a big headache for candy makers and other food companies that use the ingredient to make chocolate. The price surge has since eased off slightly, but the crop is still commanding well above what food companies are used to paying. This season's cocoa crop is expected to experience the largest deficit in at least six decades, according to a Rabobank report from May. A YouGov survey conducted in October found that 72% of U.S. respondents had noticed shrinkflation in food products. J&J Snack Foods CEO Daniel Fachner has been keeping an eye on cocoa and chocolate prices.

Many forms of help are tied to the federal poverty line, which is calculated using a formula that has largely not been updated since the 1960s. The poverty line is calculated in an outdated wayThe current federal poverty line for the 48 contiguous states and Washington, DC, is $15,060 a year for one person, $20,440 for a family of two, and $31,200 for a family of four. Courtesy of Melissa HeddenMuch of the resistance to changing the federal poverty line could stem from the government's desire not to inflate the number of people in poverty overnight. AdvertisementRep. Kevin Mullin, a Democrat from California, has introduced legislation — called the Poverty Line Act— that would modernize the federal poverty line, taking into account actual costs of goods and how prices differ across regions. A simple principle underpins a contentious Thursday decision by the U.S. and key allies to tap profits from Russian sovereign assets in support of Ukraine: Moscow must make reparations. Questions have also been raised over the legality of setting such a precedent: Russia has been cut off from its frozen assets, but retains their ownership. The proposal must now pass various legal hurdles and be backed by European states, where the majority of frozen Russian assets are held. Further loans secured against the interest accrued by Russian frozen assets could be forthcoming, U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen signaled on Thursday. The annual summit comes as most of the G7 leaders face their own domestic upheavals including national elections and falling approval ratings.

Kushner started Affinity in 2021, shortly after leaving his advisory role in the White House alongside his wife, Ivanka Trump. Neumann, who was ultimately ousted from WeWork by top SoftBank execs, introduced Kushner to Unybrands early the following year. Affinity's investment in Unybrands, which hasn't previously been reported, was one of the private equity firm's earliest deals. Following a continued slide, the company laid off roughly 10% of its staff in November 2022, according to people familiar with the matter. The House Oversight Committee launched an investigation into the investment in 2022, looking into whether Kushner's financial interests influenced Trump's foreign policy.

The share of workers who say they get Summer Fridays has dropped dramatically in recent years. Just 11% of North American workers say they have access to Summer Fridays, according to a November 2023 survey from Gartner of more than 1,100 people. Some companies have made headlines for scaling back on workplace flexibility that emerged during the pandemic. As well as withdrawing from the four occupied regions in eastern and southern Ukraine, Putin said Ukraine must demilitarize and that Western countries must lift their sanctions on Russia, which have damaged but not crippled its economy. Nearly 28 months later, Russia occupies around a fifth of Ukrainian territory, including the Crimean peninsula it annexed a decade ago. Moscow only controls these regions partially, but claimed the whole of each region was part of Russia’s territory in 2022. He asked that his terms for ending the war would need to be cemented in international agreements. “That is why we must not trust these messages, because Putin follows the same course,” Zelensky warned.

Now, a new study that looked at 5 million stars in the Milky Way galaxy suggests that seven candidates could potentially be hosting Dyson spheres — a finding that’s attracting scrutiny and alternate theories. If Dyson spheres really exist, what could they be used for? “Freeman Dyson said that we should dismantle Jupiter — the whole planet (for the raw materials).”That supercolossal scale probably means that Dyson spheres, if they exist at all, are very rare. “However, contamination by circumstellar debris disks, which mimic Dyson Sphere infrared signatures, remains a concern,” he added in an email. However, he added, the radiation fingerprint of the seven Dyson sphere candidates might be explained by natural phenomena as well.

Meme stock champion Keith Gill, known as "Roaring Kitty" online, seemed to increase his ownership in GameStop 's common stock and appears to be holding more than 9 million shares. Gill posted a new screenshot of his E-Trade portfolio on Reddit's Superstonk forum after the bell Thursday, showing that he is now holding 9.001 million GameStop shares and over $6 million in cash. On June 2, the first day he started disclosing his position in 2024's meme stock frenzy, his portfolio had 5 million shares as well as 120,000 call options against GameStop. Call options give the holder the right, but not the obligation, to buy shares at a specified price by a certain expiration date. He could have dumped all of 120,000 call contracts and used the proceeds to buy the additional shares, or he could have sold a portion of the massive options position and exercised the rest early.

A general view of the U.S. Supreme Court building in Washington, U.S., June 1, 2024. WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Thursday rebuffed a California lawyer's attempt to trademark the phrase "Trump too small," a reference to a crude joke made about former President Donald Trump. Rubio joked about what he said were Trump's small hands, adding: "And you know what they say about guys with small hands." Elster, an employment lawyer and progressive activist, applied to register "Trump too small" — a double-entendre meant to insinuate a correspondingly small penis — with the trademark office in 2018. The case is the latest of several the Supreme Court has taken up recently concerning free speech rights in the trademark context.

“Making It Work” is a series is about small-business owners striving to endure hard times. While many people can conjure up romantic visions of a Montana ranch — vast valleys, cold streams, snow-capped mountains — few understand what happens when the cattle leave those pastures. Even here, in a state with nearly twice as many cows as people, only around 1 percent of the beef purchased by Montana households is raised and processed locally, according to estimates from Highland Economics, a consulting firm. As is true in the rest of the country, many Montanans instead eat beef from as far away as Brazil. Any ranchers who want to break out from this system — and, say, sell their beef locally, instead of as anonymous commodities crisscrossing the country — are Davids in a swarm of Goliaths.

Latinas face the steepest climb up the corporate ladder despite being as ambitious as their white peers, according to new research from Lean In. Latinas lag behind nearly all other major demographic groups in the executive ranks — white men and white women, Black men and women, even Latino men — comprising a mere 1% of C-suite executives at U.S. companies. A "broken rung" at the first critical step up to manager is still holding Latinas back from climbing the corporate ladder — for every 100 men promoted to manager, only 74 Latinas are promoted, Lean In reports. Latinas are less likely than white women and women overall to have their work highlighted to a leader or to have benefited from a sponsor action like being recommended for a promotion. Nearly half (44%) of Latinas say career growth has become more important to them in the last two years, compared with 32% of white women, Lean In reports.

The loan is expected to be delivered by the end of 2024, which would ensure the money would get to Ukraine before a potential change in US presidents. “This loan will mostly be provided by the United States and will be supplemented by money from Europe,” an Élysée source told journalists at a briefing. “Countries are still discussing how to partition the cost if the profits from Russian assets are not sufficient to cover the need,” the French source added. G7 countries began brainstorming ways to identify longer-term sources of funding for Ukraine in late 2023, as lawmakers delayed in greenlighting the White House’s funding request. This week, the pope is due to make an historic intervention in the debate around AI at the G7 summit in southern Italy’s Puglia region. AI, the pope believes, can make the world a better place only if it serves the “common good” and does not increase inequalities. European Union lawmakers have already passed a law regulating AI, while a bipartisan group of US senators have set out plans for AI regulation that could lead to federal legislation. “AI and emerging technologies are on Pope Francis’ radar screen,” Larrey, now a professor of philsophy at Boston College, told CNN. It’s clear that Francis sees AI as part of what he called the “epochal change” taking place at the beginning of the 21st century.
