John Mehas, CEO of Victoria's Secret Lingerie since February 2019, was replaced on Wednesday with no reason given by the company. 2020 has been a difficult year for Victoria's Secret, with lawsuits and store closures plaguing the business. On Wednesday, L Brands announced the CEO of Victoria's Secret Lingerie, John Mehas, would be replaced. Mehas joined Victoria's Secret lingerie in February 2019 from Tory Burch, and has also worked for Gap, Bloomingdales, and others. 2020 has been a difficult year for Victoria's Secret and L Brands as a whole, with the former closing 250 store locations in the US and Canada.

(Reuters) - Wisconsin’s governor on Friday extended a statewide mask mandate despite a legal challenge from conservatives, renewing an emergency health order requiring face coverings in public spaces to curb an alarming surge in COVID-19 infections. Many Republican politicians, led by President Donald Trump, have belittled or criticized face coverings as an infringement of personal freedom. Public health experts say greater social mixing and indoor gatherings as the weather turns colder ahead of the holiday season is fueling a worsening contagion, putting already strained healthcare systems further under siege. His new health order requires everyone to wear masks in enclosed spaces except at home when no one from outside the household is present. Earlier in the day, Dr. Deborah Birx, a member of the White House coronavirus task force, appealed to Americans to avoid unnecessary travel and limit social gatherings during next week’s Thanksgiving holiday.

CHICAGO (Reuters) - A leading U.S. health official on Friday appealed to Americans to avoid unnecessary travel and limit social gatherings during the Thanksgiving holiday, fearing a further acceleration of the coronavirus pandemic after one of the deadliest weeks in months. A healthcare worker holds a coronavirus disease (COVID-19) informational pamphlet for a resident at a drive-thru testing location in Houston, Texas, U.S., November 20, 2020. “This is faster, it is broader and what worries me - it could be longer,” Birx told CNN. “In South Dakota, we won’t stop or discourage you from thanking God and spending time together this Thanksgiving,” Noem said in a statement on Friday. It now projects 471,000 coronavirus deaths by March 1, up from fewer than 440,000 in its previous forecast.

The face-covering mandate marked the latest in a flurry of new restrictions by state and local officials nationwide to tamp down COVID-19 cases soaring with the onset of winter. “Wisconsin hospitals are overwhelmed and facing staffing shortages,” Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers, a Democrat, said in a press release. His state is one of several in the Upper Midwest registering some of the highest rates of positive results from COVID-19 tests. The order, which remains in effect for 60 days, requires everyone to wear masks indoors whenever non-household members are present. “In South Dakota, we won’t stop or discourage you from thanking God and spending time together this Thanksgiving,” Noem said in a statement on Friday.

Overall, tobacco sales, which have been declining for years, are still falling, many people are still trying to quit, and the picture is mixed globally. Sales have been hit in countries such as South Africa, where tobacco sales were banned for five months from late March as part of the response to COVID-19. For example, in the United States tobacco sales by volume fell 2% in the eight months to Oct. 24, according to Nielsen data. The JT Group said Russia’s Council for the Development of the Tobacco Industry, an industry association, had written to the government to try to prevent “negative consequences” of the suspension. In the United States and Britain, tobacco was on sale in stores that sell other necessities such as groceries.

Porter Wright Morris & Arthur, the law firm leading the Trump campaign’s efforts to cast doubt on the presidential election results in Pennsylvania, abruptly withdrew from a federal lawsuit that it filed days earlier on behalf of President Trump. “Plaintiffs and Porter Wright have reached a mutual agreement that plaintiffs will be best served if Porter Wright withdraws,” the law firm said in a federal court filing. The firm’s withdrawal followed an article in The New York Times on Monday described internal tensions at the firm about its work for Mr. Trump’s campaign in Pennsylvania. One Porter Wright lawyer resigned in protest over the summer. Porter Wright, based in Columbus, Ohio, has received at least $727,000 in fees from the Trump campaign and the Republican National Committee, according to federal election disclosures.

Beam aimed to let users earn higher interest rates on their money by engaging with its mobile savings app. That's according to a lawsuit filed in an Ohio court by three Beam vendors who say they are being wrongly blamed for the delays. The suit asks the court to order Beam's cooperation in getting customers' money back. The suit says that despite Beam's claims, Dwolla never placed a hold on any Beam customer funds. Tops 100,000 New Cases in a Day for the First Time In the aftermath of a presidential election in which the pandemic was a top issue, 23 states have reached a record number of coronavirus cases in the past week. For months, Maine had among the lowest levels of transmission anywhere in the country, but new cases there have more than tripled. As states report new cases unevenly from day to day, seven-day averages are a more reliable gauge of trends than an individual day’s figures are. Surges in coronavirus cases in the Midwest could foreshadow a new round of jobless claims if indoor dining is further curtailed. On a seasonally adjusted basis, new state claims totaled 751,000, significantly lower than after the coronavirus pandemic first struck but still extraordinarily high by historical standards.

Where taking time off isn't optional

At photo book company Chatbooks, workers weren't taking enough time off, so the company now requires employees to take a full week off each quarter. Employment and labor laws offer protections -- including overtime pay, a minimum wage and paid sick leave -- that don't apply to independent contractors. Forcing Uber and Lyft to shift workers from independent contractors to employee status would mean a big -- and costly -- shakeup to their business models. The companies have spent a stunning amount (*cough cough* more than $185 million *cough cough*) on a ballot initiative called Proposition 22 that would allow ride-hail and delivery drivers to continue to be treated as independent contractors, with a few new benefit concessions. This year has already been tough enough, why add the anxiety of running out of coffee to the list?

American Electric Power plans to push forward on its clean energy plans, whether the country reelects President Donald Trump or Joe Biden to the White House next month, CEO Nick Akins told CNBC's Jim Cramer on Monday. Trump, who recently recovered from Covid-19, continues to crisscross the country in efforts to close his gap with Biden in the polls. Biden has a $1.7 trillion plan to address climate change that would extend tax credits to incentivize companies to create more wind and solar energy production plants. American Electric Power, which is based in Columbus, Ohio and produces and distributes electricity, has made investments to reduce its reliance on coal. Shares of American Electric Energy rose nearly 2% to $93.59 Monday, despite a roughly 2% fall in the major market indexes.

That is the highest refinance volume since mid-August. Mortgage rates moved even lower last week after setting multiple record lows in recent months, spurring more borrowers to call their lenders and apply for a refinance, but homebuyers were not quite as motivated. "As a result, the lower price tiers are seeing slower growth, which is contributing to the rising trend in average loan balances." The average loan size increased again, to a record $371,500, thanks to stronger activity on the high end of the market. "These sorts of bond market improvements typically result in lower rates."

As we unveil this year's Disruptor 50 list amid nationwide protests and calls to end racial inequality and senseless violence against Black people, the list has a glaring absence. Just 10 of those 209 Black Founder List companies nominated themselves for this year's Disruptor 50 list, among more than 1,300 nominees. All of this brings us back to the lack of Black CEOs on the CNBC Disruptor List this year and an explanation of how we compile it. This Disruptor 50 list features unicorn start-ups from Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Atlanta, Denver and Columbus, Ohio. While 7% of the Fortune 500 have a female CEO, 12% of the CNBC Disruptor 50 are led by women.
