Ride share companies Lyft and Uber, fielding requests from states and municipalities, are highlighting this gap in lobbying efforts aimed at President-elect Joe Biden's incoming administration, and offering “free rides.” But someone has to pay for them. Zane is helping stand up vaccination rollouts across the state, from clinics and drive-throughs to mass vaccination centers and “pop-up” clinics. President-elect Joe Biden's American Rescue Plan expands the Child Tax Credit to include $3,600 yearly benefits for families with children under the age of 6. The child and dependent care tax credit will also be expanded, covering half the cost of childcare up to $4,000 for one child. In addition, this credit will be "fully refundable," meaning that taxpayers will get a refund check even if the tax credit is greater than their tax liability. "We are facing an acute, immediate child care crisis in America, which is exacerbating our economic crisis," Biden said in a statement. As with the Child Tax Credit, this credit will be fully refundable, as well, further assisting low-income families.

NASA announced Thursday that 2020 was likely the planet's hottest year on record, edging out 2016 by one-tenth of a degree Celsius. Still, the data may help explain why the climate crisis surged to new heights in 2020, particularly in the US. Scientists can't say whether an individual storm or fire was directly caused by climate change, since many factors contribute to each event. Some studies have linked the warming climate to the now-familiar arrival of the polar vortex at temperate latitudes. North Dakota and West Virginia lead the nation, having administered more than 65% of distributed doses. "The biggest thing that we've done is backed away from the (federal) standardized program," West Virginia Governor Jim Justice told CNN. "We have instead partnered with all the pharmacies in West Virginia. By acting independently, West Virginia started vaccinating in long-term care facilities about a week before other states started. The Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, which has demanded a federal face covering mandate since early in the pandemic, said the mandate would provide one standard across U.S. aviation and back up flight attendants and other airline workers who must enforce compliance. Biden in October said he would mandate masks in all interstate U.S. transportation and he has recently reiterated that plan. The Biden transition team did not immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday.

A December NPR/Ipsos survey found that 23% of Republicans believe in the baseless conspiracy theory. A new poll from YouGov found that around 30% of self-identified Republicans have a favorable view of QAnon, the baseless far-right conspiracy theory that claims President Donald Trump is secretly fighting a "deep state" cabal of satanic pedophiles and cannibals. But according to the survey, 30% of GOP voters who say they have a positive response to the conspiracy theory, which represents a sizable bloc of the party.

Starting last week, US officials began allowing states to transfer coronavirus vaccine from hospitals to local retail pharmacies to speed up immunizations. At least one state, New York, will begin administering those transferred doses to elderly Americans on Thursday. The immunizations mark the beginning of a much wider vaccine rollout in pharmacies across the US. To assist with this process, Warp Speed allowed states to transfer doses that were sitting in freezers at hospitals to local retail pharmacies. States can continue to transfer shots moving forward, she added, with doses being moved to pharmacies on Thursdays each week.
