Why do women’s haircuts cost more than men’s?
  + stars: | 2024-07-27 | by ( Anna Cooban | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
Last year, the average cost for a standard women’s haircut was $51.71 compared with $34.56 for a men’s haircut across the United States, according to transaction data provided exclusively to CNN by Square, a payment systems provider. A man gets his hair cut in a barber shop in Colchester, United Kingdom. That report found the average cost of a women’s haircut ranging between $45 and $75 across the country, while men’s toggled between $25 and $50, though it did not specify whether the typical women’s haircut included extra services such as a blow dry. “When you go to cosmetology school to become a hair stylist, you learn to how to cut hair,” they told CNN. Goldie x Bob is one such hair salon that, five years ago, threw out its gender-based price list.

About 90,000 NATO troops have been training in Europe this spring for the Great Power war that most hope will never come: a clash between Russia and the West with potentially catastrophic consequences. In Estonia, paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division out of Fort Liberty, N.C., jumped out of planes alongside soldiers from Colchester Garrison in Essex, Britain, for “forcible entry” operations. In Lithuania, German soldiers arrived as a brigade stationed outside Germany on a permanent basis for the first time since World War II. And on the A4 autobahn in eastern Germany, a U.S. Army captain and his Macedonian counterpart rushed toward the Suwalki Gap — the place many war planners predict will be the flashpoint for a NATO war with Russia — hoping the overheated radiator on their Stryker armored combat vehicle wouldn’t kill the engine.

Small business confidence hit its lowest level in more than 11 years for March as proprietors worried that inflation is still very much a problem. A quarter of all respondents reported that rising costs were the biggest problem. "Small business optimism has reached the lowest level since 2012 as owners continue to manage numerous economic headwinds," NFIB Chief Economist Bill Dunkelberg said. "Inflation has once again been reported as the top business problem on Main Street and the labor market has only eased slightly." A quarter of all respondents cited inflation, and in particular higher input and labor costs, as their most pressing issue.

Costco and TJX Companies should be able to manage the emerging transition to deflation by leveraging their deep value propositions to get customers to buy more. Average sale prices on other items like TVs have been lower while unit sales have gone higher. Membership fee revenue is some of the glue that allows Costco to keep prices so low. Costco can boost sales in either scenario by "encouraging its members to buy more items to get more savings," Feldman said. Like Costco, Feldman said the off-price retailer would need to increase revenue either through price or number of units.

King Charles’s response to the latest commotion surrounding the British monarch has been to continue to keep quiet and turn up at public events. Photo: cameron smith/Agence France-Presse/Getty ImagesLONDON—Allegations of racism in the British monarchy were again thrust into the public domain this week after a translation of a book claimed that King Charles and Catherine, Princess of Wales, were the mystery royals who had allegedly discussed concerns about the skin color of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry ’s son before his birth. The claim was made in a Dutch translation of “Endgame: Inside the Royal Family and the Monarchy’s Fight for Survival,” which was quickly pulled by the publishers who said the names had appeared in error. On Friday, virtually every major British newspaper and broadcaster revealed the names.

A bus and car were set on fire in Dublin during the violence. Photo: Brian Lawless/Zuma PressIreland witnessed its worst civil disorder in decades after rioters marauded through Dublin city center looting shops and setting buses and police cars on fire in a spate of violence that appeared to be triggered by a stabbing attack that injured three children. Irish police said Friday that 13 shops were damaged and 34 people arrested following the riots, which followed the attack by an unidentified man outside a school on Thursday afternoon. Garda Commissioner Drew Harris said on Friday that he had not seen such levels of violence “for decades.” He added that it had been caused by a “lunatic, hooligan faction driven by far-right ideology.”

The U.K. plan is part of a broader effort by Western countries to cope with a rise in migrants arriving at their borders. Photo: henry nicholls/Agence France-Presse/Getty ImagesLONDON—A U.K. plan to send some migrants who arrive illegally to live in Rwanda suffered a major setback after a top court said the central African country wasn’t a safe place to house asylum seekers. The ruling scuttles Prime Minister Rishi Sunak ’s marquee policy to curb migration and offers a warning shot to other European nations considering similar plans.

Ratcliffe/Bloomberg NewsLONDON—U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak named one of his predecessors, David Cameron , as foreign secretary, part of a surprise government shake-up aimed at dragging his Conservative Party back to the center ground as it languishes in the polls. Cameron—a Tory moderate who quit as prime minister after Britain voted to leave the European Union—will now take one of the government’s plum jobs after seven years in the political wilderness. He is the first former British prime minister to return to a cabinet post in more than 50 years.

ITTAI GRADEL, an academic–turned–gem dealer in Denmark, was trawling eBay a decade ago when he thought he had stumbled across a gold mine. On his screen, Gradel saw a seller called Sultan1966 advertising a glass gem from the 19th century. Gradel immediately recognized it as something much more valuable: an agate Roman Medusa cameo from the second century, featuring the mythical Gorgon with snakes as hair. He snapped it up for £15 plus postage, then turned around and sold it to a collector for a couple of thousand pounds.

This week's government economic data revealed pockets of durable consumer spending despite sticky inflation, signaling a favorable quarter ahead and further upside for two of our retail stocks. Since Amazon is the largest e-commerce retailer, the government data suggests Amazon sales in the third quarter should be positive sequentially. Case for Costco Strong August retail sales numbers also bode well for Costco which essentially sells most items listed in the government's dataset. According to Jim, Costco has been doing so well because "the consumer seems very intrigued by bargains," as they've dealt with high inflation for over a year. For August, Costco said U.S. sales rose 2.8% from a year ago, slightly edging out the year-over-year, inflation-adjusted 2.5% gain in U.S. retail sales overall, reported by the Commerce Department.
