☆ Amazon-backed Anthropic launches its Claude AI chatbot across Europe

Anthropic, the artificial intelligence startup backed by Amazon , said Monday it's launching its generative AI assistant Claude in Europe on Tuesday. A paid subscription-based version of Anthropic's Claude assistant, called Claude Pro, will be available to users who want access to all its models, including Claude 3 Opus, Anthropic's most advanced offering. Anthropic is also launching its business-focused Claude Team subscription-based plans, which cost 28 euros ($30) a month before value-added tax (VAT). The AI Act seeks to, among other things, identify and apply rules in accordance with the levels of risk AI poses, dividing categories of risk into low, medium, high and unacceptable. Anthropic said its Claude assistant is highly fluent in French, German, Italian, Spanish, and other European languages.

Matt Calkins, CEO and co-founder of Appian, said that though internet giants like Microsoft , Amazon , and Google are spending billions on the tech, ensuring success in AI is "not just about money." "AI is not a place where money makes more money," Calkins told CNBC in an interview at its London bureau on Tuesday. Microsoft has struck a similar deal with Mistral, taking a 15 million euro ($16 million) stake in the French AI firm. Separately, Amazon has invested a whopping $4 billion into U.S. AI firm Anthropic, which is behind the Claude AI system. "The best AI will be the AI you put your data into, not whoever bought the biggest stack," he said.

The news, reported earlier by The Information on Monday, follows various reported calls to find Altman's successor days after OpenAI's board ousted him. OpenAI declined to comment and board member Adam D'Angelo did not immediately respond to a request for comment. On Sunday the board offered ex-Twitch CEO Emmett Shear to be its interim chief, who accepted. By Monday, nearly all of the startup's more than 700 employees threatened to quit, including one of its executives on OpenAI's now four-person board.

You can save time by summarizing long PDFs for free with Anthropic's Claude AI chatbot. Claude allows you to upload PDFs, as well as some other files, such as DOCX, CSV and TXT, directly to it. Then, by typing a command such as "Summarize PDF," you can get a clear, concise summary of PDFs across a wide range of subject matter. For example, when Claude was fed two different publicly available PDFs of F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby," it returned two different summaries of the novel. Claude may return different summaries for the same PDF even when given the same command, but each summary is still accurate.

July 11 (Reuters) - Anthropic, an artificial intelligence startup backed by Google, on Tuesday widened consumer access to its chat program Claude and upgraded underlying technology that the company says makes "Claude 2" better at tasks such computer coding and arithmetic. Businesses can launch products drawing on the model, and consumers in the U.S. and UK can chat with it online. Anthropic said in its upgrade of Claude it had doubled the model's performance on a safety evaluation. Unlike Claude, its recent GPT-4 model is "multimodal," meaning it can respond not just to text but to images that humans give it. Anthropic, founded by former OpenAI executives, said Claude 2 now scores 76.5% on the multiple-choice section of the Bar, up from 73% for its earlier model.
