CNN —A group of passengers on board a LATAM Airlines flight that experienced a mid-air drop while traveling to New Zealand arrived in Chile on Tuesday, with two of them speaking to a CNN team at Santiago International Airport. “The experience was horrible,” said Chilean resident Verónica Martínez, who was on flight LAN800 from Australia to New Zealand on Monday. She described that moment as being on a “roller coaster.”Dozens of people were injured after LATAM Airlines flight 800 from Sydney, Australia to Auckland, New Zealand experienced a “technical event” on Monday that produced a sudden movement, the flight operator reported. WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. government has seized a Boeing 747 cargo plane that officials say was previously sold by a sanctioned Iranian airline to a state-owned Venezuelan firm in violation of American export control laws. The Justice Department said Monday that the American-built plane had arrived in Florida and would be disposed of. The plane was detained in June 2022 by Argentine law enforcement, and U.S. officials moved several weeks later to take possession of it. The Justice Department has identified the registered captain of the plane as an ex-commander for the Revolutionary Guard. Mahan Air has denied any ties to the aircraft, and Venezuela has demanded that Argentine authorities release the plane.

I was a senior in college in 1978 when I wrote my first opinion piece that touched on airline deregulation. It was an editorial in The Cornell Daily Sun (“Ithaca’s only morning newspaper”!) I wrote, “When Kahn began hacking away at airline protectionism the airlines screamed, but today fares are lower, passenger volume is way up and airlines are actually profiting. People complain about high fares, unreliable service, lack of legroom and so on. The public’s disgruntlement has created an opening for talk about some pretty extreme solutions.

BOGOTA, Feb 11 (Reuters) - Low-cost Colombian airline Viva Air has voluntarily started a local debt restructuring process, the company said late on Friday, as it awaits authorization of its merger with Avianca (AVT_p.CN) airlines. "Viva accepts this voluntary recovery process that lasts 90 days, in order to restructure its debts through negotiation with its main creditors to continue operating under sustainable conditions," it added. The airline said it entered the process after much consideration, as it awaits a decision on the Avianca merger. The announcement came after ultra-low-cost airline JetSMART Airlines also announced its intention to buy 100% of Viva Air. The airlines filed an appeal and in January the aviation governing body annulled the merger process citing procedural irregularities, and restarted it.

A passenger plane was forced into an emergency landing by extreme weather over South America. The Airbus A320 landed in Paraguay with a broken nose cone and a smashed windshield, images show. The plane hit "extreme and unforeseen weather conditions," according to the Chilean officials, who did not give precise details. According to Paraguayan news outlet Telefuturo, the flight had resumed its journey after an initial diversion to avoid the weather. Dramatic images broadcast by Telefuturo show the aircraft with a large portion of its nose cone broken off, its windshield shattered and equipment dangling from its base.
