CNN —Louisiana public schools are now required to display the Ten Commandments in all classrooms, after Republican Gov. Before signing the bill, Landry called it “one of (his) favorites.”“If you want to respect the rule of law, you gotta start from the original law given which was Moses. Politicians have no business imposing their preferred religious doctrine on students and families in public schools,” the groups said in a joint statement. The Supreme Court ruled that the coach’s prayers amounted to private speech, protected by the First Amendment, and could not be restricted by the school district. At the time, the court clarified that a government entity does not necessarily violate the establishment clause by permitting religious expression in public.

Jeff Landry signed legislation on Wednesday requiring the display of the Ten Commandments in every public classroom in Louisiana, making the state the only one with such a mandate and reigniting the debate over how porous the boundary between church and state should be. Critics, including the American Civil Liberties Union and the Freedom From Religion Foundation, vowed a legal fight against the law they deemed “blatantly unconstitutional.” But it is a battle that proponents are prepared, and in many ways, eager, to take on. “I can’t wait to be sued,” Mr. Landry said on Saturday at a Republican fund-raiser in Nashville, according to The Tennessean. And on Wednesday, as he signed the measure, he argued that the Ten Commandments contained valuable lessons for students. “If you want to respect the rule of law,” he said, “you’ve got to start from the original law giver, which was Moses.”

For nearly a quarter-century, Sandra Day O’Connor , who died Friday at age 93, was perhaps the most powerful woman in America, often casting the deciding vote when her Supreme Court colleagues divided 4-4 along ideological lines. Her decisions on issues including abortion, affirmative action, voting rights and the line between church and state often reflected a pragmatic middle ground that frequently aligned with mainstream public opinion. O’Connor’s retirement in 2006 sent the court in a new direction. Republican presidents selected justices devoted to formal theories that seek constitutional fealty regardless of contemporary social values. Where O’Connor took each case as it came, today’s majority views the litigation before it as part of a larger struggle over the Constitution’s meaning.

O’Connor inspired generations of female lawyers – including the five women who served after her nomination on the high court. CNN —The arc of Rep. Mike Johnson’s career encapsulates the shifting priorities of the religious right in the era of Donald Trump. More than half of White evangelicals agreed with that statement as well – the only major religious denomination in which it found majority support. Yet both groups are much more influential inside the GOP coalition, with evangelicals representing nearly one-third of Republican voters and all White Christians about two-thirds. But in Congress, Johnson has also identified more with some of the party’s Trump-era priorities that revolve around demographic change. But each man appears equally committed to a vision of America that elevates the moral and political preferences of conservative White Christians over any other group.

High school football coach Joe Kennedy is back to coaching and praying on the field after a years-long fight. Kennedy was put on leave in 2015 over a fight with his school regarding praying on the football field. Joe Kennedy strode alone to midfield, knelt, and prayed for about 10 seconds after his Bremerton High School football team beat visiting Mount Douglas Secondary School 27-12 Friday night. The Freedom From Religion Foundation, which works to keep government and religion separate, placed a billboard message near the school that read: "Wishing Bremerton High School a safe, secular & successful school year." In 2015, a dozen members of the Satanic Temple of Seattle went to a varsity football game at Bremerton High School, many dressed in hooded black robes or masks.

In June, Oklahoma’s Statewide Virtual Charter School Board approved the nation’s first religious public charter school. The Archdiocese of Oklahoma City and the Diocese of Tulsa were given permission to open St. Isidore of Seville Catholic Virtual School in August 2024. That’s right, a religious public school, funded by the state’s taxpayers. Proponents hope this model will spread to the dozens of other states that allow charter schools. Seven percent of public school students in the country attended charter schools as of the fall of 2021, and that number continues to grow.
