ET Live Updates: Biden Plans Major Expansion of Vaccinations and Virus Relief President-elect Joe Biden unveiled an ambitious $1.9 trillion spending package. That means the trial will not effectively start until after Mr. Biden is sworn in on Wednesday, officials involved in the planning said. Mr. Romney was the only Republican last year to vote to convict Mr. Trump when the House impeached him for pressuring Ukraine to incriminate Mr. Biden. Speaking from Delaware on Thursday to introduce his sweeping economic plan, Mr. Biden urged lawmakers to come together and pass additional relief. “The very health of our nation is at stake,” Mr. Biden said, speaking from Delaware.

ET Live Updates: Police Investigating Whether Lawmakers Gave Mob Members Tour of Capitol Before Riot The Capitol Police are looking into whether members of Congress inappropriately gave visitors access to the Capitol ahead of last week’s assault. That means the trial will not effectively start until after Mr. Biden is sworn in on Wednesday, officials involved in the planning said. The latter option may be more appealing to Mr. Biden, but it could undercut Democrats’ argument that Congress must move urgently to impeach and try Mr. Trump. Speaking from Delaware on Thursday to introduce his sweeping economic plan, Mr. Biden urged lawmakers to come together and pass additional relief. Mr. Trump immediately seized on the investigation, using it as evidence to his false and discredited theories of widespread voter fraud.

WASHINGTON — Amid the sea of troubling facts, arrests and iconic images that have emerged in the days since the assault on the Capitol, one element remains largely absent: reassurances from some of the nation’s top national security officials. Neither the acting attorney general, Jeffrey A. Rosen, nor the F.B.I. director, Christopher A. Wray, has appeared at the type of high-profile news conference that typically marks a major criminal investigation, instead issuing news releases. Mr. Rosen also called for calm and vowed to fully investigate the violence, but the comments came in a video posted by the Justice Department on YouTube around midnight. Chad F. Wolf, the departing acting secretary of homeland security, was in the Middle East during the siege and did not return until later in the week.

There will be at least 10,000 National Guard troops in Washington, DC, by Saturday. The US military footprint in Washington for President-elect Joe Biden's inauguration will be greater than the number of troops in Afghanistan and Iraq combined. The increased troop presence in DC is a stark reminder of the rising threat of domestic terrorism, and the fact it outweighs the dangers of foreign extremism to the US. There will be at least 10,000 National Guard troops in Washington, DC, by Saturday to bump up security ahead of President-elect Joe Biden's January 20 inauguration. The U.S. attorney in Washington initially refused to rule out investigating Mr. Trump’s role in the riot. The deadly storming of the Capitol by Mr. Trump’s supporters transformed the politics of Washington in ways that were still hard to measure. The December call to the investigator, like the call Mr. Trump made to Mr. Raffensperger, was recorded, the official said. Mr. Trump had pressured Mr. Pence publicly and privately to overturn the certifications and throw them back to the states so that Mr. Trump could try to undo results in states that Mr. Biden won. Parler is one of several upstarts that have courted President Trump’s supporters with promises of “unbiased” and “free speech” social networks.

Mr. Sherwin said that the theft of files and electronics opened the possibility of national security breaches but that the Justice Department did not yet have a full understanding of the scope of the problem. Mr. Leffingwell then “spontaneously apologized.”Prosecutors also unsealed charges against a Maryland resident, Christopher Alberts, accusing him of illegally carrying a Taurus 9-millimeter pistol at the riot. Officers first saw Mr. Alberts leaving the Capitol complex around 7:30 p.m. and noticed a bulge on his right hip. When they stopped Mr. Alberts, the officers found the pistol, which had one round in the chamber and a magazine filled with 12 rounds, according to the complaint. After he was taken into custody, the complaint said, Mr. Alberts told the police that he had the weapon for “personal protection” and did not intend to harm anyone.
