Discussions of pay came up rather frequently and I felt it was my responsibility to be an ally to my female colleagues when it came to salaries. But I want to share my experiences to encourage other men in the workforce to share what they make with their female colleagues. On separate occasions during that role, three of my female colleagues began pursuing senior analyst roles, which was my prior role. Men, help your female colleagues earn what they’re worthI don’t see any downsides to pay transparency. AdvertisementWhile it might be nice to imagine employers making pay equity or transparency a priority, in my experience, employers will find reasons for explaining away the pay gaps.

Erin Wickham, 34, says she found Taylor Swift "annoying" for most of her twenties. I always knew Swift as this pop-bubblegum artist, so I didn't expect muchThe process of getting converted from Taylor Swift antagonist to full-on superfan happened faster than I expected. Swift's music spoke to me on an emotional level I wasn't expectingI had a difficult 2022. I was crazy for Taylor Swift, but I wasn't going to shell out that kind of money. Taylor Swift's music makes me feel less aloneI imagine this sense of connection is why people have followed groups like the Grateful Dead and Phish around for so many years.

Stephanie Vollmer moved to Germany from South Korea about 18 months ago. I was teaching English in South Korea when I met my now-husband in 2021. In the US and South Korea, I was used to people being friendly toward visitors trying to learn the language. Coming from the US and South Korea, where same-day or next-day delivery is more common, this has been an adjustment. When I lived in South Korea, I was much closer to my dad and my stepmom, who lived in the Philippines.

Chris Weller recently launched a new business to help thought leaders tell their stories. He read many books before starting his business and shared his six favorites. My business is to help thought leaders in business and academia write more effectively and gain recognition for their ideas — storytelling. Before I started the actual business, I knew I needed to learn more about what I was getting myself into. Three weeks into starting my business, I was already under contract for my first projects and now have a handful more lined up.
Plane crashes are extremely rare. Data from past crashes and crash tests show that the back of the plane is probably the safest. In the rare case that a plane goes down, some research indicates that the safest place to be sitting is in a middle seat near the back of a plane. A 2015 analysis by Time magazine of the Federal Aviation Administration's aircraft accident database looked at 17 plane crashes with seat charts that could be analyzed. Middle of the plane, middle seat: 39% — about one in 2.5 passengers.
Japan is a country of more than 127 million people, but it rarely sees more than 10 gun deaths a year. Culture is one reason for the low rate, but gun control is a major one, too. Japan, a country of 127 million people and yearly gun deaths rarely totaling more than 10, is one such country. Japan is a country with regulations upon regulationsJapan's success in curbing gun deaths is intimately linked with its history. The government has since loosened the law, but the fact Japan enacted gun control from the stance of prohibition is important.
Around election time, Americans tend to start googling ways that they can move to another country. This year is no different, and on election night 2020, Google searches for "how to move to New Zealand" skyrocketed. There are a few ways you can move to New Zealand if you're a US citizen under normal circumstances, either temporarily or permanently. The border remains closed to the US due to the coronavirus pandemic, and New Zealand has suspended applications for most temporary visas until February 2021. Once the pandemic is over, here are the steps you can take to actually make the move and become a Kiwi if that's your ultimate goal.

In an interview with Adam Bryant of The New York Times, Fried told Bryant that he's mystified by some of the attitudes found in the tech world. But a lot of the tech world is obsessed with growth and revenue and not profit. They're obsessed with ego. They're obsessed with all the things that I think are bad business." AdvertisementApparently, this type of anecdote isn't unusual in the tech world — and it paints a picture of an intense work culture that could easily lead to burnout.

AdvertisementJason Fried, CEO of the web development company Basecamp, has another excuse: He's already implemented them. Digital marketing company Steelhouse, for instance, offers employees $2,000 a year to take any vacation they choose. A number of other larger companies have taken steps to be more employee-friendly in recent years, particularly with parental leave. In August 2015, Netflix began offering salaried employees unlimited paid parental leave for a whole year. (Four months later, it started offering hourly workers 16 weeks of paid leave, where before they received 12 weeks.)

In the clear-blue waters off the coast of Dubai lies a chain of islands known as The Heart of Europe. They're manmade reconstructions of actual European nations, just on a smaller scale — part of an even larger chain of islands known as "The World." The Heart of Europe saw its very first $2.8 million floating home, the aptly named "Floating Seahorse," touch down earlier this year. Now they intend to build even larger homes that will cost a whopping $12 million. The giant fleet of Floating Seahorses are slated for completion later this fall.

When water hits Topmix Permeable concrete, it doesn't flow in all directions, slicking up the surface. Traditional concrete has to be permeable enough to let a minimum of 300 millimeters of water an hour through to the ground level. Topmix Permeable, in contrast, lets through 36,000 millimeters of water an hour, or approximately 880 gallons every minute. The seemingly magical product comes from Tarmac, a UK building materials and solutions company, which created Topmix Permeable to divert rainwater during storms. AdvertisementAdvertisementRather than use sand-based concrete, Tarmac uses something called no-fines concrete.
