Both regular and enhanced seats will be available for selection at booking, starting in 2025 for flights in early 2026, Southwest said. Southwest AirlinesSouthwest has already announced an improved cabin with tablet holders, charging ports, upgraded overhead bins, and better WiFi. The cabin improvements come as Southwest plans to cut some short-haul flying in favor of more lucrative long-haul operations. But the de minimis rule also has powerful defenders. Airlines canceled more than 3,000 U.S. flights Friday as they grappled with winter weather and the grounding of Boeing 737 Max 9 planes. United canceled about 10% of its mainline flights and delayed about 30%. That grounding has continued to disrupt travel for United and Alaska Airlines, the only U.S. airlines operating the aircraft. Alaska said that between 110 and 150 flights per day would be impacted by the grounding of the Max 9. United Airlines said it canceled flights scheduled to use a Max 9 through Tuesday.

Lyft says riders can now pre-order a ride as soon as they land at an airport. The new feature comes as the ride-hailing app is trying to up its game to compete with Uber. For travelers that dread waiting and waiting to get picked up from the airport, Lyft says it has an answer: a new feature that lets travelers request a ride as soon as their flight lands. Other changes the company has made include discontinuing its pooled ride feature, which it pioneered ahead of competitor Uber, according to Bloomberg. The company has also been scrambling to compete Uber, to which it ceded market share during the pandemic after being slow to introduce driver-friendly features and bonuses, the Wall Street Journal reported last month.

WASHINGTON, Feb 27 (Reuters) - The Federal Aviation Administration said Monday it is awarding nearly $1 billion to 99 U.S. airport terminal projects under a 2021 $1 trillion infrastructure law. The awards include $10.8 million to Des Moines International Airport in Iowa to replace the 1948 terminal that is operating above capacity and $29 million to Salt Lake City International Airport in Utah for a terminal and concourse redevelopment program. This is the second phase of funding - the FAA awarded nearly $1 billion for airport terminal projects announced for 85 airports last year. In November the FAA granted final environmental approval for construction of a new $4.2 billion terminal at New York City's John F. Kennedy International Airport and for an $8.5 billion project at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport that includes a new Terminal 2. The 2021 infrastructure law dedicates $25 billion for airport projects over five years.

The extreme weather coincided with the start of a holiday travel season that could be one of the busiest ever. The Federal Aviation Administration said Thursday that the winter storm was bringing blizzard conditions to the Midwest with major travel disruptions expected in Chicago, Detroit and Minneapolis-St. Paul. More than 1,830 U.S. flights had been canceled Thursday and another 900 flights for Friday were scrapped, according to flight tracking website FlightAware. Last year's holiday period was marred by an outbreak of COVID-19 among staff that forced airlines to cancel thousands of flights.

Airport workers across the country are rallying and walking off the job Thursday to draw attention to their current working conditions and legislation that could improve them. Workers at 15 U.S. airports, including ones in Dallas, Los Angeles, Miami, New York City and Phoenix, plan to participate in on-site rallies. Formal strikes — which could disrupt operations — are planned at Boston's Logan International Airport, Chicago's O'Hare International Airport and the Newark Liberty International Airport. The rallies are in support of the Good Jobs for Good Airports Act, introduced in June by Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass. It would set a minimum wage of $15 for airport service workers, as well as ensure the workers have paid time off, holidays, adequate health care and other benefits.

If the deal is approved by Delta pilots, it is widely expected to act as a benchmark for contract negotiations at rivals United Airlines (UAL.O) and American Airlines (AAL.O). The Atlanta-based carrier's pilots have been working without a new contract for nearly three years after their old contract became amendable in December 2019, fueling frustration. In the draft agreement, Delta promises that pay rates of its pilots will exceed those at United and American by at least 1%. In a year of protests for the industry, pilots at all major U.S. carriers have been demanding higher wages and a better work-life balance. In its memo, Delta's pilot union said more than 25% of the value of the contract agreement is dedicated to quality-of-life related items.

According to Delta, starting January 1, only Diamond, Platinum, Gold, and Silver Medallion members can buy annual memberships to the Sky Club. Sky Club members flying on a basic economy ticket, as well as Diamond, Platinum, and Gold Medallion Members flying internationally in Delta's Main Cabin or Comfort+ can no longer access the Sky Club, effective February 2. Access can be granted through other means, like having an eligible American Express credit card or a Club membership, according to Delta. These are huge changes for the airline, especially since anyone can currently purchase a Sky Club membership.
