☆ Broadcom adds silicon AI features to speed new Trident networking chip

Devoting a portion of the silicon in Broadcom's Trident networking processors to AI improves the chip's efficiency and its ability to handle other tasks such as network security. The chip, called a Trident 5-X12, can help alleviate some of the network traffic congestion, Robin Grindley, an executive in Broadcom's Core Switching Group, said in an interview. The AI portion of the chip can be turned on after a customer builds an AI model based on the traffic in their data center. Once constructed, a form of the model is fed into the chip and it can help route the traffic. The new version of the Trident is built with 5 nanometer manufacturing technology and is currently shipping to "qualified" customers.

For the company's enterprise and carrier business, inventory clearing has dampened prospects of new orders for chip makers like Marvell. For the current quarter, Marvell expects revenue of $1.42 billion plus or minus 5%, compared with estimates of $1.46 billion. However, Marvell beat Wall Street estimates for third-quarter revenue and profit, as the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) buoyed demand for its chips. Marvell posted net revenue of $1.42 billion for the quarter ended Oct. 28, compared with analysts' estimates of $1.40 billion, according to LSEG data. Excluding items, the company posted a profit of 41 cents per share, marginally beating estimates of 40 cents per share.

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov 16 (Reuters) - San Francisco police began arresting protesters calling for a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war on Thursday after demonstrations blocked the Bay Bridge, a key commuter route into the city which is hosting the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum. Authorities also deployed tow trucks to remove protesters' vehicles blocking the bridge. Local emergency services warned of the blockage during morning rush hour on the bridge which links Oakland and other East Bay cities to San Francisco. For the current fiscal third quarter, Arm expects a revenue range with a midpoint of $760 million, below analyst estimates of $767.84 million, according to LSEG data. The AI cloud-computing organization, called Voltage Park, has 24,000 Nvidia H100 chips, Voltage Park CEO Eric Park told Reuters in an interview. SiFive, based in Santa Clara, California, builds chip designs based on an open chip architecture known as RISC-V, and competes against the recently public Arm Holdings (O9Ty.F), . Like Arm, SiFive builds the underlying designs chips are based on, but not the chips themselves. The company is scaling back its effort to offer customized designs for customers, beyond the standard blueprints that are available. Technology giants such as Qualcomm (QCOM.O) and Alphabet's Google (GOOGL.O) have embraced the underlying RISC-V technology.

Nvidia and AMD could sell PC chips as soon as 2025, one of the people familiar with the matter said. Nvidia and AMD would join Qualcomm (QCOM.O), which has been making Arm-based chips for laptops since 2016. The local unit of China’s Landbridge Group has been operating the port in Darwin after getting a lease in 2015. Some former Australian defense officials and analysts say the port—which has been used by U.S. troops to unload equipment for training exercises—is important because it’s near military installations that could be crucial in any regional conflict.

Lam posted first-quarter revenue of $3.48 billion, compared with market estimates of $3.41 billion. China constituted 48% of its first-quarter revenue compared with 30% a year earlier, the company said. The rules narrowed restrictions announced last year that cost Lam roughly $2 billion dollars in lost revenue. "I don't know if China is up, down or sideways next year, but it's not going away," Bettinger said.
