Kent Nishimura | Getty ImagesU.S. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned Tuesday following widespread outrage over how her agency failed to prevent the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump at a Pennsylvania campaign rally earlier this month. Kimberly Cheatle, director of the U.S. Secret Service, testified. "The Secret Service has a no-fail mission yet it failed historically on Director Cheatle's watch," said Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., the committee's chairman. "At yesterday's Oversight Committee hearing, Director Cheatle instilled no confidence that she has the ability to ensure the Secret Service can meet its protective mission," Comer said.

The Secret Service denied some of former President Donald Trump's requests for additional security resources over the past two years, an official with the agency confirmed to NBC News. The Secret Service official said extra security accommodations could not always be made for Trump due to the department's limited resources. "In some instances where specific Secret Service specialized units or resources were not provided, the agency made modifications to ensure the security of the protectee," Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi told NBC News. Last Sunday, he said the assertion that the Secret Service had rebuffed Trump's team's requests for additional security were "absolutely false." In the wake of the attempted assassination of Trump, the Secret Service has been under intense scrutiny.

WASHINGTON — House Speaker Mike Johnson and other top Republicans are calling for the resignation of Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle days after a gunman tried to assassinate former President Donald Trump at a Pennsylvania rally. FBI Director Christopher Wray, Deputy Director Paul Abbate, as well as Secret Service Deputy Director Ronald Rowe are on the list of briefers. The most critical, perhaps, is why was the roof of a building within 150 yards of Trump was not secured by the Secret Service or local law enforcement. They also want to know why Secret Service snipers on another roof in the area didn't engage the shooter until after Crooks had fired multiple times. I am the director of the Secret Service."
