There is no franchise in Hollywood filmmaking that is as consistently good, and as consistently interesting, as “Planet of the Apes.”I feel very strongly about this, and not because I am an admitted enthusiast of genre filmmaking. Like any long-running series, “Planet of the Apes” — which spans 10 films and more than 50 years — has its lows. If you somehow are not familiar with the premise of “Planet of the Apes,” it is surprisingly straightforward. The first five films, beginning with 1968’s “Planet of the Apes” and concluding with 1973’s “Battle for the Planet of the Apes,” tell the story of the fall and rise (and fall again, perhaps) of ape society. When the apes finally arrive — as predators hunting a roving band of humans — it is in a kinetic sequence of genuine intensity.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The start of the commercial Dungeness crab season in California has been delayed for the sixth year in a row to protect humpback whales from becoming entangled in trap and buoy lines. The state Department of Fish and Wildlife said commercial crabbing will be delayed until at least Dec. 1. It’s the latest delay for the start of the commercial season, which traditionally begins in mid-November for waters between the Mendocino county line and the border with Mexico. The recreational take of Dungeness crab using traps will be temporarily restricted in some areas when the recreational season opens Nov. 4, officials said. A statement from Manchester United called Charlton one of the club’s “greatest and most beloved players.” It was revealed in November 2020 that Charlton had dementia. One of the best-loved players in the English game, Charlton was famed for his bullet shot and relentless goal scoring, despite not playing as a traditional striker. He was England’s top scorer, with 49 goals, for 45 years, until Wayne Rooney beat the mark in September 2015. Charlton was also Manchester United’s top scorer for decades, with 249 goals from 758 appearances over 17 years, until Rooney surpassed that figure, too, in January 2017. Charlton, who was dragged from the wreckage by a teammate, was 21 at the time.
