Man Utd show signs of life, but City offer real test
  + stars: | 2023-10-26 | by ( Martyn Herman | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
Another not-too-convincing victory at bottom club Sheffield United last weekend was admirable in its own way following the news of club great Bobby Charlton's death before kickoff. City suffered consecutive league defeats before the international break but have answered any doubts with wins over Brighton & Hove Albion and then at Young Boys on Wednesday in the Champions League. Guardiola will need no reminding that City lost at Old Trafford last year, having crushed United 6-3 at home. City also won the FA Cup final against United on their way to matching the Reds' treble of 1999. Sixth-placed Newcastle United will have to shrug off the disappointment of their Champions League loss to Borussia Dortmund as they face Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.

The words "Sir Bobby Charlton, 1937-2023, Forever Loved," had been added over Old Trafford's main entrance, a wreath was placed in Charlton's seat inside the stadium and the players wore black armbands for the game. Charlton was a key figure in England's 1966 World Cup-winning team, playing alongside his brother Jack, and he made 758 appearances for United, scoring 249 goals.

MANCHESTER, England, Oct 24 (Reuters) - Harry Maguire and Andre Onana, two of Manchester United's biggest targets of fan criticism, earned a huge measure of redemption in their squad's 1-0 victory over FC Copenhagen on Tuesday -- and praise from manager Erik ten Hag. Maguire, whose abuse from supporters had former player David Beckham reach out to him in support, headed home in the 72nd minute, while Onana saved a penalty in the final seconds of the match for United's first Champions League win of the season. Ten Hag said defender Maguire, who was also excellent in Saturday's 2-1 Premier League win at Sheffield United, is playing much more proactively in possession. "Stepping in passing vertical, defending also on front foot, stepping in defending forward, very confident in the duels, he is dominating, dominating his opponents," Ten Hag said. "There is a great spirit and they are together and that is important always as a team, the team is more than the sum of the individuals," Ten Hag said.

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Bobby Charlton, an English soccer icon who survived a plane crash that decimated a Manchester United team destined for greatness to become the heartbeat of his country's 1966 World Cup-winning team, has died. “Sir Bobby was a hero to millions, not just in Manchester, or the United Kingdom, but wherever football is played around the world,” United said. “There was always one great hope — the return to greatness of my beloved club,” Charlton said. The biggest prize of his club career arrived in 1968 as United became the first English club to become champion of Europe. But Charlton is perhaps best known for being part of the England team that won the World Cup.

On Thursday against Italy, Kane netted his 54th goal for his country in 81 appearances to surpass Rooney in the record books. Kane fired home a penalty shortly before halftime in Naples in England's 2-1 victory to become his country's all-time top scorer. Rooney, whose 53 goals came in 120 games, was one of the first to congratulate the England captain Kane. "Congratulations to Harry Kane on becoming England's all-time leading goalscorer. Kane, 29, had already set one goalscoring record this season, having gone past Jimmy Greaves's haul of 266 goals for Tottenham last month.
