HUDSON, Ohio — Organizers of a Memorial Day ceremony turned off a speaker’s microphone when the former U.S. Army officer began talking about how freed Black slaves had honored fallen soldiers soon after the Civil War. Retired Army Lt. Col. Barnard Kemter said he included the story in his speech because he wanted to share the history of how Memorial Day originated. The Ohio American Legion said Wednesday that it was investigating. “The American Legion deplores racism and reveres the Constitution," the organization's national commander, James W. “Bill” Oxford, said in a statement. “We salute LTC Kemter’s service and his moving remarks about the history of Memorial Day and the important role played by Black Americans in honoring our fallen heroes.

But Enwezor’s exhibition, which is on view through June 6, reaches beyond this point to feature more than three dozen contemporary Black American artists who represent the concepts “of mourning, commemoration, and loss as a direct response to the national emergency of black grief,” he imagined. But there was also the challenge of curating a show about Black grief without characterizing it as the fundamental condition of Black life in America. The result is an exhibition that features depictions of Black grief alongside Black joy and other aspects of Black life. Other featured works are similarly realistic in their representations, relying on reportage to document the many manifestations of Black grief alongside Black hope for better futures. The airline is founded by David Neeleman, his fifth commercial airline start-up including JetBlue (JBLU.O) and Canada's WestJet. Breeze will have 39 nonstop routes between 16 cities by July. But using autism as an excuse only further stigmatizes autistic people and makes neurotypical people associate the condition with violence and antisocial behavior. Of course, blaming autism for the harmful actions of entitled men is not unprecedented in our society, which is one reason why stigmas around autism persist. Autistic people can as easily express bigoted views or be committed to social equality as neurotypical people.
